# Performance and pet-friendly weaves for a house full of paws

*Kids and dogs are the real quality control. These are the weaves that pass their inspection most days, and here are the honest notes for the days they don't.*

> **The quick answer:** Performance and pet-friendly weaves are tight, wipeable upholstery fabrics for window seats, mudroom benches and family floor seating. The dedicated pet fabric is 100% polyester, rated by its supplier at about 88,000 Martindale, 10.9 oz/yd² (370 g/m²), woven with no loops for claws to catch. Covers unzip and machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. No fabric can promise claws won't mark it.

![Berry red three-piece window seat cushion between oak bookshelves, black cat asleep, linen, boucle and olive pillows](https://cushionguide.com/media/window-seat-cushions/berry-red-three-piece-window-seat-oak-library-1600.webp "A berry red window seat in three sections sits between oak bookshelves. ## The hand and the weave: soft on the lap, tight under a paw

Run your palm across a performance weave and it feels like a thick, soft linen-look cloth. Hook a fingernail into the pet weave and nothing catches, because there are no loops. That second test is the one your cat will run.

The family has two branches. The first is what the workshop calls 'soft fabric', codes 901 to 946, the best seller on the wall: a thick, durable weave, mostly a poly-cotton blend (earlier descriptions called it 100% polyester). It isn't chenille, it isn't 100% cotton, and it's a little thinner than velvet.

The second is the pet chart. About three fabrics in the range are designated for pets, and the swatch cards show the spread: a soft G-series weave in 27 colors (G-41 to G-67), a leather-grain card in 23 (A-01 to A-23) and a water-repellent textured weave in 23 shades (B-01 to B-23). The G weave is 100% polyester at 10.9 oz/yd² (370 g/m²), woven tight.

## Where it works best: window seats with a cat, mudroom benches with a dog

Look at who's in the photographs. A black cat asleep on a berry red window seat in an oak library. A tabby on a chocolate window seat at golden hour, another on an ivory corner seat in a cottage kitchen, a tuxedo cat on a curved black bay seat. A terrier and a pair of boots by a mustard mudroom bench.

That's the job: [window seat cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/), [mudroom and entryway benches](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/mudroom-and-entryway-bench-cushions/) and [pet beds and pet-friendly cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/pet-friendly-cushions/). Soft fabric is what the workshop recommends for kids, rentals, daily use and sleeping, and it's the cover on the tufted floor cushions, so it's a natural pick for [kids' floor sofas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/kids-floor-sofas/) too.

For a bench by the back door, [mudroom bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/mudroom-bench-cushions/) has builds that live through boots and wet dogs.

## Durability: 88,000 rubs and the honest limits

The supplier rates the pet weave at about 88,000 on the [Martindale](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#martindale) rub test. That's a lab machine rubbing the cloth until it shows wear, and the number is how many rubs it took. American labels often quote double rubs instead, and the two tests don't convert neatly; [Martindale vs double rubs](https://cushionguide.com/guides/martindale-vs-double-rubs-fabric/) sorts that out.

What matters on a window seat is structure. A tight weave with no loops gives a claw nothing to hook, which is exactly where a looped cloth like bouclé gets into trouble. Soft fabric, for its part, wipes clean and lasts for years of ordinary family use.

Now the honest part. No fabric can promise that a determined cat won't mark it, and I won't pretend otherwise. [Pet-friendly cushion fabric](https://cushionguide.com/guides/pet-friendly-cushion-fabric/) goes through the limits, claw by claw.

## Care and washing after a muddy-paw day

- ✓ Unzip the cover from the underside and slide it off the foam.
- ✓ Machine wash at 86°F (30°C) at most on a gentle, delicate or cold cycle. The 30 is Celsius, not Fahrenheit.
- ✓ Mild detergent, no bleach, and turn the cover inside out first.
- ✓ Air dry it instead of tumble drying; iron on low only if it needs it.
- ✓ Between washes, wipe soft fabric down with a damp cloth.
- ✓ Button-tufted floor cushions keep their covers on for good, so treat spills where they land; [stain first aid](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-stain-removal-first-aid/) covers paws, mud and juice.
- ✓ On floor sofas, the white non-slip bottom pieces never go in the machine.

## Color: choose it in daylight, next to the dog

The pet cards run wide. The G weave goes from navy and powder blue through off white, camel, rust, bottle green, sage and charcoal to blush pink and burgundy. The leather-grain card holds cognac, cream, greige, sage, navy, burnt orange, oxblood, charcoal and black, and the textured weave runs white to black by way of mustard, rust, slate blue and denim blue.

Here's my front-step advice. Order the swatches, carry them to the window seat, and set them down beside whoever sheds on it. So tell me, neighbor: what color is your dog? Pick a shade near the coat and a stray hair disappears into it.

Sunlight and camera angle can make a tone look different from one photo to the next, but it's the same fabric. Trust [daylight over your screen](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-color-screen-vs-daylight/).

## Pet-friendly weaves next to their neighbors

| | Performance weave | Faux leather | Corduroy | Velvet |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Surface | Tight weave, no loops | Smooth leather-look face | Ribbed pile | Dense, smooth pile |
| Pet hair | [yes] Easy to wipe | [yes] One home switched to it | [no] Clung to the ribs in one home | [yes] Wipes easily |
| Recommended for | Kids, rentals, daily use, sleeping | Homes where hair clings to pile | Indoor floor sofas | Wipe-clean without leather |
| Machine wash | 86°F (30°C), gentle | 86°F (30°C), gentle | 86°F (30°C), delicate | 86°F (30°C), gentle |

For rain and damp porches, look to the water-repellent membrane and outdoor acrylic families.

## The window seat cushion with nothing to hold on to

This one comes up again and again, and it's never the fabric's fault. A buyer measures a narrow window seat carefully, orders the cushion to the exact size, and then it slides every time somebody sits down. A cushion cut exactly to a shallow seat has nothing to grip.

The workshop's fixes, depending on the case: a remake, a slightly larger size so it sits snug, or a non-slip solution, with extra anti-slip fabric sold at cost. One more wrinkle: a non-slip base was once left off to keep a cover machine-washable. So ask whether the backing is washable before you order it, and check the pre-dispatch photo for small extras like ties.

On a lift-up storage bench, split the cushion at each lid break and add ties. [Stopping the slide](https://cushionguide.com/guides/stop-bench-cushion-sliding-ties-nonslip/) and [hinged lids](https://cushionguide.com/guides/storage-bench-cushion-hinged-lid/) have the details.

> **Tailor's margin:** Order a spare zippered cover in the same size, and a muddy-paw day on the window seat becomes a quick swap and a gentle 86°F (30°C) wash.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** What exactly is your 'soft fabric' made of?

**The workshop's answer:** It's the workshop's name for its best-selling upholstery range, codes 901 to 946: a thick, durable performance weave with a soft hand. Most replies describe it as a poly-cotton blend, earlier ones as 100% polyester; it isn't chenille and isn't 100% cotton. It wipes clean, machine washes at 86°F (30°C) and lasts for years. For a natural fiber, choose cotton-linen instead.

**A common question:** Is that 30 degree wash in Fahrenheit or Celsius, and which cycle should I use?

**The workshop's answer:** Celsius, so 86°F (30°C) is the maximum. Take the cover off the foam, turn it inside out, and use a gentle, delicate or cold cycle with a mild detergent and no bleach. Air dry instead of tumble drying and iron on low if needed. On floor sofas, keep the white non-slip bottom parts out of the machine.

**A common question:** Is your linen really 100% linen, and what holds up on a hard-working bench?

**The workshop's answer:** Usually not 100%. The standard linen charts are blends or linen-look fabrics: the L linen-look codes are polyester, the natural linen chart is 50% linen and 50% polyester, and another range is 50% cotton and 50% linen. They're used because they're durable and easy to clean, and a sturdy acrylic linen is recommended for hard-working projects. A 100% linen chart is available on request.

**A common question:** Could I do the seats in one color and the backrests in another, and keep a spare set?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Choose the mix-color option and note which piece gets which color. Real orders have paired a yellow and a pink seat with blue and brick backrests, or cream seats with one brick and one water green backrest. Buyers also order a spare cover set in a second color to swap between.

**A common question:** My tufted floor cushion is in soft fabric. Can the cover come off for washing?

**The workshop's answer:** Not on a button-tufted cushion: those covers are sewn through, don't come off and aren't machine washable. Every other cover has a hidden zipper on the underside, comes off the foam completely and machine washes at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. Air dry rather than tumble drying.

## More from the porch: paws, kids and wash day

### What does a Martindale figure of 88,000 tell me about a family bench?

It's a lab rub count: how many rubs the cloth took on a test machine before showing wear. It tells you the pet weave was built for heavy rubbing, not that it will last a set number of years. US labels often quote double rubs, which come from a different test.

### Will cat claws ruin a performance weave?

The pet weave is woven tight with no loops, so claws have little to hook. No fabric can promise a determined cat won't mark it, though. Zippered covers help: if one suffers, a replacement cover can be made to the same size without new foam.

### Is soft fabric a good choice for a toddler's floor cushion or naps?

Yes. The workshop recommends soft fabric for kids, rentals, daily use and sleeping: it's soft, durable, wipeable and machine washable at 86°F (30°C). If the cushion is button-tufted, remember its cover stays on, so spills get wiped rather than washed.

### Can pet-friendly fabric go on a porch or patio?

Treat it as indoor fabric. For a porch or patio that sees rain, choose the water-repellent membrane or outdoor acrylic families instead, and skip button tufting outdoors. A covered, dry porch is a closer call, worth asking about with a photo.
