# Faux leather for custom cushions: the numbers, the colors, the caveats

*Faux leather is the fabric people choose with their eyes and keep for practical reasons. It costs a little more, it takes a piping line like a drafting pen, and it has limits I'd rather state up front than explain later.*

> **The quick answer:** Faux leather is a leather-look upholstery fabric for custom daybed, L-bench and floor sofa cushions, priced a little above the standard linen-look, velvet and performance charts. Piping is included, matched or contrasting. Pet owners switch to it when hair clings to a pile fabric like corduroy. Covers unzip from the underside, and real cowhide has also been made to order.

![Oxblood burgundy faux leather daybed cushion and bolster with dark contrast piping, cream pillows, herringbone floor](https://cushionguide.com/media/daybed-cushions/oxblood-faux-leather-daybed-dark-piping-parquet-1536.webp "A dark welt outlines both the seat and the bolster ends, giving deep wine red a crisp, tailored edge.")

## The hand and the look: a smooth face with sharp edges

Ten photographs on this page, ten pieces in [faux leather](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#faux-leather): six daybeds and four L-shaped benches. The face is smooth, the edges are square, and the piping reads like a line on a drawing.

The family isn't one cloth. Most pieces here show a smooth leather-look face; the rust daybed in evening light wears a suede-like finish instead. There is also a textile with a very smooth, premium hand close to soft leather, for buyers who want that feel and still want a fabric.

And when someone wants the real thing, the workshop has made cowhide window seat cushions to order: natural tri-color hide, not a print, from a hide it sources or one the buyer sends in.

## Where it works best: daybeds, L-benches and bolsters

The gallery sorts itself. Daybeds first: oxblood with dark piping on a walnut ledge, forest green seen from above, black with a bolster used as an armrest, chocolate with a full-length bolster, ivory in morning sun. Then corners: dove gray on an L-shaped window bench by the bookshelves, cognac on a pale ash plinth, taupe on a walnut storage bench under tall windows.

So the short list is [daybed cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/daybed-cushions/), [L-shaped corner benches](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/l-shaped-cushions/) and [bolster pillows](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bolster-pillows/), plus replacement covers for a [modular floor sofa](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/modular-floor-sofas/). An L-bench is two runs and one corner, and the corner is where I'd check twice; [measure both runs](https://cushionguide.com/guides/l-shaped-bench-cushion-measurements/) before you pick a color.

## Durability and wear: what I can state, and what I won't

Partner, here's the tolerance on my claims. I don't have a rub count for faux leather that holds for every card, so I won't print one. If you're specifying a café or a rental, ask for the fabric's own test data first; [commercial cushion specs](https://cushionguide.com/guides/commercial-cushions-cafe-rental-specs/) lists what to request.

What I can state: faux leather has no pile to crush and no loops to snag. That's why a buyer in the US moved a floor sofa from corduroy to faux leather covers after pet hair clung to the ribs. Claws are another matter. I make no promise for any leather-look surface there, and neither should anyone else.

Construction does the rest. Single piping on the top and bottom edges is standard, double piping is optional, and the zipper sits on the underside where it stays hidden. The full list of caveats lives in [faux leather seat cushions](https://cushionguide.com/guides/faux-leather-seat-cushions/).

## Care and washing, step by step

1. Unzip the cover from the underside; it comes off the foam completely.
2. Machine wash at 86°F (30°C) at most on a gentle or delicate cycle. That 30 is Celsius; at 30°F you'd be washing in ice.
3. Use a mild detergent and no bleach, and turn the cover inside out if you can.
4. Air dry. Never tumble dry.
5. Between washes, a damp cloth on a fresh spill is the reason most people pick this family.
6. Button-tufted covers are sewn through and don't come off, so they aren't machine washable; see [tufted cushion care](https://cushionguide.com/guides/tufted-cushion-care-buttons-cleaning/).

## Color and light: oxblood to ivory, and the sheen your screen invents

The photographs run through ten tones: oxblood, dark cherry, rust, cognac, taupe, dove gray, forest green, chocolate, black and ivory. A leather-look face picks up highlights, so the same cushion reads darker in a lamp-lit corner than by a sunny window. Sunlight and camera angle change the tone in a photo; the fabric doesn't change.

The faux leather cards aren't on the standard charts, so ask to see them, then order [swatches](https://cushionguide.com/guides/fabric-swatches-before-ordering/) of your short list. What color is the floor it will sit on? Hold the swatch there, not against the screen.

Piping is included at no extra charge, matching or contrast, from any code on any chart. Orders split roughly half and half. The oxblood daybed wears dark contrast piping; [matching, contrast or none](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-piping-matching-contrast-none/) lays out the choice.

## Faux leather compared with velvet, performance and linen-look

Pet hair clung to a corduroy floor sofa in one US home; faux leather covers replaced it.

## A 118-inch corner floor sofa that changed its skin

A buyer in the US ordered a mustard corduroy closed-corner floor sofa, about 118 x 79 x 14 in (300 x 200 x 35 cm) overall, with seats of 79 x 39 x 6.7 in (200 x 100 x 17 cm). They asked for it to arrive after their move, and it came vacuum packed in 4 big boxes and 1 small box of metal bars.

Step one went sideways, literally. On a bare floor the modules kept sliding apart. The workshop suggested a rug and extra connector bars, and the rug helped a lot. [Support bars and the slide](https://cushionguide.com/guides/floor-sofa-support-bars-assembly/) covers that setup.

Step two came later. Pet hair clung to the corduroy ribs, so the buyer ordered green faux leather covers for the corner set. New skin, same skeleton. [Replacement covers](https://cushionguide.com/guides/floor-sofa-replacement-covers/) explains how the fit carries over.

> **Tailor's margin:** On a bare floor, a faux leather floor sofa slides like any other. Put down a rug and use every connector bar before you blame the fabric.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Do you make cushions in leather, or at least faux leather?

**The workshop's answer:** Faux leather, yes, for a little more than the standard fabrics; ask to see those cards. There is also a textile with a very smooth, leather-like hand. Real cowhide has been made to order for window seat cushions, a natural tri-color hide rather than a print, from a hide the workshop sources or one you supply. If wipe-clean is the main goal, velvet wipes easily too.

**A common question:** Which fabric families can I pick from for a made-to-measure cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** Three main indoor families, each with its own numbered chart of about 40 colors: linen and linen-look, velvet, and 'soft fabric', an easy-clean upholstery weave. Teddy, corduroy, 100% cotton, 100% linen, chenille, faux leather and a separate water-repellent outdoor range are also available, and the workshop can source from more than 10,000 fabrics on request.

**A common question:** Do linen and velvet cost the same, and what costs extra?

**The workshop's answer:** Linen and velvet cost the same, and so do the other standard charts, patterned ones included. Only special fabrics raise the price: teddy, 100% natural fibers such as linen, cotton or viscose, faux leather, and fabrics sourced from outside the range. Quotes are based on size, fabric and quantity.

**A common question:** Can each piece of my modular floor sofa be a different color?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Choose the mix-color option and write in the order note which piece gets which color, ottoman and loveseat included. You aren't limited to the colors in the photos, though the corduroy range has no black. Some buyers also order a spare cover set in a second color to swap between.

**A common question:** Do the covers come off, and can they go in the washing machine?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Every cover has a hidden zipper on the underside and comes off the foam completely, for full cushions and cover-only orders alike. The fabrics machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle or delicate cycle; let them air dry and iron on low only if needed. Button-tufted covers are sewn through and stay on.

## Faux leather, the follow-up questions

### Is faux leather a good choice with cats and dogs in the house?

For hair, often yes: one buyer in the US switched a corduroy floor sofa to faux leather covers because pet hair clung to the ribs. For claws, no leather-look surface comes with a promise. Scratchers are better matched to the dedicated pet-friendly chart, a tight weave with no loops.

### Can faux leather have contrast piping?

Yes. Piping is included at no extra charge and can match the body or contrast with it, using any code from any chart, since there is no separate piping chart. Roughly half of orders choose matching piping. Single piping on the top and bottom edges is standard; double piping is optional.

### How do I judge a faux leather color from a photo?

Carefully. Sunlight and camera angle shift the tone in photographs, and a leather-look face picks up highlights. Send a screenshot of the photo you like so the workshop can name the codes, then order swatches and look at them on your own floor in daylight.

### Which cushions suit faux leather best?

Daybed cushions and bolsters, L-shaped corner benches and replacement covers for floor sofas are where it shows up most in our photographs. A square box edge with a single piping line shows the material at its best.
