# Kids' room decor for playrooms and nurseries: cushions sized for small bodies

*Children measure comfort with their whole body. They lie, roll, climb and read upside down. The cushions in their rooms are sized for that.*

> **The quick answer:** A kids room cushion is a floor cushion, corner seat, star pouf, play couch or window-seat pad sized for children to sit, lie and play on. The kids' corner floor cushion is foam-filled, about 8 in (20 cm) thick, with a removable cover, in three sizes from about 31 1/2 to 47 in (80 to 120 cm) a side.

## A room where the floor is the furniture

In a child's room, the floor is the main piece of furniture. A kids room cushion lives there. A corner seat under a canopy. A star pouf by the bookcase. A play couch that turns into a fort. A small pad on a window seat for reading.

Children use a cushion differently from adults. They lie across it, stand on it, drag it into the hallway. So it needs a removable cover, foam that holds up, and a size that fits the room with floor left over.

The pieces have their own pages: [corner floor cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/corner-floor-cushions/), [star poufs](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/star-poufs/), [kids' floor sofas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/kids-floor-sofas/) and plain [floor cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/floor-cushions/).

## Sizes that fit a child's room

## Stars, arches and quarter circles

Kids' rooms hold more shapes than any other room the workshop sews for.

A [star pouf](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#star-pouf) is a floor cushion with points: forest green velvet, olive-and-cream awning stripe, espresso corduroy, each set under a canopy of small lights. A [corner floor cushion](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#corner-floor-cushion) fills the angle between two walls. The quarter-round kind is measured along its two straight sides, never around the curve. The rainbow arch is a set of nesting corduroy pieces that come apart for play; in one photograph a rust half-dome has been pulled forward, as children do.

Piping is optional. The dusty mauve velvet window seat wears a thin off-white line. A floor cushion under a canopy can go without.

## Fabrics for small hands and long afternoons

Choose for washing first. Color second.

- [Corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/): mustard on the corner cushion, espresso on a star, rust on a floor sofa, navy and petrol blue in the corners. Soft and warm.
- [Velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/): a forest green star, a dusty mauve window seat. Beautiful. It shows handprints.
- [Striped cotton and ticking](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/striped-cotton-and-ticking/): red pencil stripe on a reading bench, raspberry and pink on a star. The roll is about 55 in (140 cm) wide, so on a long bench the stripes run front to back.
- [Performance and pet-friendly weaves](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/performance-and-pet-friendly/): for rooms shared with a dog.

Every foam cushion has a zippered cover that comes off. [Kid-friendly cushion fabric](https://cushionguide.com/guides/kid-friendly-cushion-fabric/) goes through spills, crayons and washing, one at a time.

## Eight inches of foam, and when to ask for softer

The kids' corner floor cushion is foam-filled and about 8 in (20 cm) thick. That is twice the standard seat cushion.

The kids' play couch uses single-density T28 foam, about 1.75 lb/ft³ (28 kg/m³). It can be upgraded to 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³). Softer and alternative grades exist on request; write the grade into personalization when you order. Firmness on standard seat cushions runs about 6 to 7 on a 1 to 10 scale.

Floor cushions are firm enough to sleep on. For a toddler's proper bed, the workshop points to its separate kids' foam bed; see [crib and toddler mattresses](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/crib-and-toddler-mattresses/). The [foam firmness finder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/foam-firmness-finder/) helps with everything in between.

## The space under the loft bed

Parents write to the workshop about the floor under a loft bed. They want one cushion that is a reading spot by day and a sleepover bed at night.

It works. The cushions are solid enough to lie on, and many buyers use them for exactly this. For a child under a loft bed, the workshop suggests 24 x 70 in (61 x 178 cm) or 27 x 70 in (69 x 178 cm). Lengths of 70 to 75 in are made routinely.

For a guest who needs more room, a twin-size piece is about 38 x 75 in (97 x 191 cm). A 6 or 8 in (15 or 20 cm) thickness lifts the bed higher off the floor.

## What goes wrong in playrooms

- ✗ Judging a vacuum-packed floor sofa the day it arrives. Foam fills out in 24 to 36 hours and reaches full firmness in 3 to 5 days.
- ✗ Leaving floor seating loose on hardwood. A rug or grip mat underneath stops the slide.
- ✗ Setting up a modular floor sofa without all its connector bars. Use every bar supplied, with felt pads under metal on wood floors.
- ✗ Expecting ties without asking. Ties and straps are added only on request, in writing.
- ✗ Choosing the largest corner cushion for a small room. Measure the corner and keep open floor around it.
- ✗ Assuming the pillows in the photo are included. Styled pillows are sold separately.

## Setting up the corner, and where to start

Keep the room quiet so the child can be loud. One cushion color. One pattern, on a pillow. A canopy or a lamp for the evening. The mustard corner under a sage canopy works because nothing competes with it: star and flower pillows, a plush fox, a cream rug.

What does your child do first in their room: sit, lie down, or climb?

Plan a reading pad in the [bench cushion builder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/bench-cushion-builder/), or pillow covers in the [pillow cover studio](https://cushionguide.com/studio/pillow-cover-studio/). Then read [kids' floor sofas and play couches: sizes by age](https://cushionguide.com/guides/kids-floor-sofa-size-by-age/), [corner floor cushions: quarter-circle sizes](https://cushionguide.com/guides/corner-floor-cushion-quarter-circle-size/) and [unpacking a vacuum-packed cushion](https://cushionguide.com/guides/vacuum-packed-cushion-first-72-hours/). More layouts are in [playroom corner cushions](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/playroom-corner-cushions/).

A low seat. A soft corner. Room left to roll.

> **Tailor's margin:** The kids' corner floor cushion comes 31 1/2, 39 1/2 or 47 in (80, 100 or 120 cm) a side. The 39 1/2 in size sells most.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** What size floor cushion would let an adult guest sleep in the playroom?

**The workshop's answer:** Around 60 in wide was suggested for one adult of about 5 ft 2 in. Someone 5 ft 9 in tall was advised the 30 x 73 in French tufted set: one base, one back and two end cushions, all filled. Longer custom sizes suit taller adults, and a 6 or 8 in thickness sits higher off the floor.

**A common question:** The floor sofa came flat and folded. Did we get the wrong one?

**The workshop's answer:** No. Floor sofa seats and backrests ship vacuum-compressed and roll-packed, so they look smaller at first. Unwrap every piece. Most fill out in 24-36 hours, reach the photographed shape in about 36-48 hours, and are fully firm after 3-5 days. Shaking them by hand helps, and the sofa can be used while it expands. If a piece is still flat after another 4-5 days, photograph it and message the workshop.

**A common question:** I picked the wrong color for the kids' floor sofa. Can I switch before it ships?

**The workshop's answer:** Usually, yes. Colors on modular floor sofas are switched after checkout as long as the order hasn't shipped, after a check with production. Send the exact color name or number from the chart. If the order is already packed and leaving that day, it ships as ordered, and an extra cover set in the other color is the fix.

**A common question:** Does the modular floor sofa come with its metal bars, and will it get upstairs to the playroom?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes to both. The bars are included and hold the backrests and armrests. A single sofa has 4, a 3-seater uses 5, the L-shape with ottoman 6, and a full corner set 8 large and 8 small. Bars may ship in a separate parcel. If one is missing, photograph what came and message the workshop. The sofa comes in separate pieces, so it fits through a normal door.

**A common question:** The cover came with the body and piping colors swapped. What happens now?

**The workshop's answer:** Treat it like a wrong size and send the workshop a photo. In past cases where the workshop made the error, only the wrong parts were remade and the wrong ones didn't have to go back; buyers who preferred to keep a piece were offered a partial refund instead.

**A common question:** We're moving next month. Can the order reach the new house after we arrive?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Write 'please deliver on or after [date]' in the order note or message the shop, and the order is held so it lands close to that date. Order straight to the new address; a new-build that isn't receiving deliveries yet can wait until you've moved in. Ask for the current transit time, and leave a margin.

## Small questions about small rooms

### What sizes does the kids' corner floor cushion come in?

Three: 31 1/2 x 31 1/2 in (80 x 80 cm), 39 1/2 x 39 1/2 in (100 x 100 cm) and 47 x 47 in (120 x 120 cm). The middle size is the best seller. Each is foam-filled, about 8 in (20 cm) thick, with a removable cover.

### What foam is inside a kids' play couch?

Single-density T28 foam, about 1.75 lb/ft³ (28 kg/m³), which can be upgraded to 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³). Softer and alternative grades are available on request; write the grade you want into personalization when you order.

### Are tufted floor cushions filled with foam?

No. Tufted French-style cushions and tufted floor cushions have no foam core. They are packed tightly with siliconized polyester fiber balls, a hollow, cotton-like fiber, and deliberately overfilled so they stay firm instead of flattening.

### How thin can a window seat pad in a child's room be?

The thinnest standard foam cushion is 2 in (5 cm). A 1 in (2.5 cm) pad can be made only without piping; about 1 1/4 in (3 cm) can take piping. Tufted cushions can't go that thin. The usual window seat thickness is 4 in (10 cm).

### Are the pillows shown on star poufs included?

No. Pillows styled in listing photos are decorative and sold separately, and listing prices are per single cushion. Floor-cushion and French sets are the exception: their price includes the backrest and bolsters.

### Can ties hold stacked floor cushions together?

Yes. Fabric ties can be sewn into the seams on request, at the corners or the back, in any position. They hold stacked cushions together, fix a cushion to a bench or tie a backrest to a seat. Write the position and length of each tie in the order note.
