# Van conversion cushions: build the frame, then measure seat, back and bed

*Conversions rarely match their drawings. Six real builds and two common backrest questions, each with its numbers, and the one subtraction that makes a back cushion fit.*

> **The quick answer:** Order van conversion cushions only after the frame is built, and measure the seat and back separately, because they are rarely the same width. When the back rests on the seat, take the seat thickness off the back height. Split the base at each storage lid, and for foam you already own, order a cover with all three dimensions.

![Greige chenille-look box seat and two back cushions on a low solid-oak platform sofa beside a weeping fig](https://cushionguide.com/media/daybed-cushions/greige-chenille-oak-platform-sofa-cushions-1600.webp "A plain greige chenille seat and split back cushions turn a simple oak plinth into a quiet living-room sofa.")

## The drawing stops being true at the first bracket

A van build is a drawing that stops being true the day the first bracket goes in.

So my first rule for **van conversion cushions** is dull and non-negotiable: build the frame, then measure it. The eight notes below cover school buses, vans, one retired futon, and the two backrest questions every builder asks. Each kept its numbers. Most of them teach the same three things. The back is rarely as wide as the seat. The back height loses whatever sits underneath it. And a bed made of cushions needs to be flat; the seams hardly matter.

Measure twice; the fabric remembers. Then sketch the bench in the [bench cushion builder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/bench-cushion-builder/), and browse the [boat and RV cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/boat-and-rv-cushions/) and [backrest cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/backrest-cushions/) hubs. Restoring an older trailer instead? The [vintage camper and RV](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/vintage-camper-and-rv-cushions/) sketches are next door.

What does your frame measure today, partner, not on the drawing?

## Six builds and two backrest questions, all with numbers

### 01. A school-bus loveseat with a narrower back

![Taupe chenille seat cushion and honey-gold striped back cushions on an oak daybed under an arched window with olive tree](https://cushionguide.com/media/daybed-cushions/taupe-seat-gold-stripe-backrest-arched-window-daybed-1600.webp "A plain seat and striped backs split the work between durability and pattern in this sunlit villa lounge.")

A buyer in the US measured the loveseat in a converted school bus: back 46.5 x 17.5 in (118 x 44.5 cm), seat 48 x 16.5 in (122 x 42 cm). The workshop subtracted the backrest thickness from the back height and cut the back cushion narrower than the seat. Both pieces were made in linen.

**The takeaway:** Measure the back and the seat as two separate parts; in a bus they are rarely the same width.

> **Tailor's margin:** School-bus loveseat: back 46.5 in wide, seat 48 in. Measure the back and the seat separately.

### 02. A skoolie sofa bed that waited for its frame

![Stone velvet daybed cushion on a low oak platform with plum, rust, cream and sage pillows and a linen throw](https://cushionguide.com/media/daybed-cushions/stone-velvet-daybed-cushion-layered-pillows-928.webp "A stone-colored velvet daybed mattress is the calm base for a row of plum, rust, cream and sage velvet pillows.")

A buyer building a skoolie wrote to the workshop for two 75 x 26.5 in (191 x 67 cm) cushions for a sofa that pulls out into a double bed, ideally in deep green linen. The workshop sent the linen color chart and a quote. Then the buyer did the sensible thing and held the order until the bed frame was built, so the measurements would be exact.

**The takeaway:** Get the quote early if you like, but place the order after the frame exists.

> **Tailor's margin:** Skoolie sofa bed: two 75 x 26.5 in cushions, ordered only after the frame was built and measured.

### 03. A bench base split over storage, a back that doubles as infill

![Mushroom taupe suede-finish daybed cushion and bolster on a pale oak drawer base, kilim and knit pillows, olive tree](https://cushionguide.com/media/daybed-cushions/mushroom-suede-finish-daybed-oak-drawer-base-olive-tree-1536.webp "A brushed faux-suede seat on a pale oak storage base, dressed Mediterranean-style with kilim pillows, a caramel throw and an olive tree.")

A van dweller wrote to the workshop with a 24 x 70 in (61 x 178 cm) base and a 14 x 70 in (36 x 178 cm) backrest that drops in as bed infill when the bench extends. Storage compartments sit under the base, so she asked whether two base cushions would feel odd to sleep on. The workshop told her a split base would not look or feel weird, and suggested its durable, easy-clean fabric for the main sitting area.

**The takeaway:** Split the base at each lid break; the seam barely registers when you sleep.

> **Tailor's margin:** Van bench over storage: split the 24 x 70 in base at the lids; the seam barely matters for sleeping.

### 04. A cover for foam that was already cut

![Ivory faux leather daybed cushion with matching bolster, sage and taupe pillows, on a walnut plinth beside a fiddle leaf fig](https://cushionguide.com/media/daybed-cushions/ivory-faux-leather-daybed-walnut-plinth-morning-sun-1536.webp "An all-cream seat and bolster on a deep walnut base, with a sage pillow as the only hint of color.")

A buyer wrote in while building a van bed platform around a 27.6 x 78.7 x 3.9 in (70 x 200 x 10 cm) cold-foam mattress. The foam was already bought, so the order was a corduroy cover only.

**The takeaway:** For a cover-only order, send all three dimensions of the foam: length, width and thickness.

> **Tailor's margin:** A cover for existing van foam needs all three dimensions, like 27.6 x 78.7 x 3.9 in.

### 05. A small L-shaped couch that sleeps

![Raspberry daybed cushion with self piping and matching bolster on a low oak frame against whitewashed brick, brass arc lamp](https://cushionguide.com/media/daybed-cushions/raspberry-daybed-cushion-bolster-whitewashed-brick-1600.webp "A raspberry mattress cushion and matching bolster turn a low oak frame into a reading daybed. Linen and rust pillows add depth.")

A buyer in the US designed a small L couch with backs on the two outer edges: seats of 78 x 31 x 6 in (198 x 79 x 15 cm) and 24 x 26 x 6 in (61 x 66 x 15 cm), backs of 78 x 18 x 5 in (198 x 46 x 13 cm) and 55 x 18 x 5 in (140 x 46 x 13 cm). One seat runs past the corner, so that one had to be the longer seat. The 6 in seats were chosen so the couch would last and double as a bed.

**The takeaway:** In an L, one run covers the corner; size that seat longer than its own wall.

> **Tailor's margin:** In an L-shaped couch, one seat covers the corner and runs longer: 78 in beside a 24 in seat.

### 06. A futon frame, old wool filling, new covers

![Cinnamon velvet cushion on a carved wooden bench in a riad courtyard with a mint tea tray, books and lemon tree](https://cushionguide.com/media/daybed-cushions/cinnamon-velvet-carved-riad-bench-cushion-lattice-1600.webp "A plain cinnamon velvet cushion lets a carved courtyard bench shine, with a tea tray and one kilim pillow.")

A buyer in the US stopped sleeping on a futon and wanted it as an everyday sofa, reusing the wool filling from the old mattress. The workshop made two zippered linen-blend covers with no foam: a 72 x 23 in (183 x 58 cm) seat with 4 in (10 cm) of fillable depth and a 72 x 21 in (183 x 53 cm) back with 3 in (7.5 cm). After ordering, the buyer realized the covers needed ties on all four corners to hold them to the frame, and the workshop added them to the order.

**The takeaway:** A covers-only order can reuse good filling; state the fillable depth and the tie positions up front.

> **Tailor's margin:** Reusing old filling: a 72 x 23 in seat cover with 4 in fillable depth, ties on all four corners.

### 07. The back is not always as long as the seat

![Red, teal and cream geometric tile-print daybed cushion with matching pillows on a built-in ledge by open sea-view doors](https://cushionguide.com/media/daybed-cushions/geometric-tile-print-daybed-cushion-ocean-view-ledge-1600.webp "A deep built-in ledge becomes a daybed with a made-to-fit cushion and three pillows cut from the same small geometric print.")

On the workshop's floor cushion and bench sets, the backrest is made the same length as the seat, 16 in (40 cm) high and 4 in (10 cm) thick as standard, and buyers in the US ask about this often. In a van that default is often wrong, as the school-bus loveseat above shows. So the back gets its own length, a height anywhere from about 8 in to 16 in or more, and a two-piece split when the wall calls for one.

**The takeaway:** Write the back's own length, height and thickness on the order; never let it default to the seat's.

> **Tailor's margin:** A standard backrest matches the seat length at 16 in high; in a van, give the back its own length.

### 08. A thinner back, and the 21 in arithmetic

![Teal velvet daybed cushion on a low teak platform in a whitewashed loggia with linen pillows and a sea view](https://cushionguide.com/media/daybed-cushions/teal-velvet-daybed-mattress-teak-platform-sea-view-1600.webp "A teal velvet mattress on a low teak platform, with linen pillows in oatmeal and rust and the sea just beyond.")

Buyers in the US ask whether back cushions should match the seat's thickness. They don't have to: many choose a thicker, firmer seat and a thinner or softer back, such as 4 in backs on an 8 in seat (10 cm on 20 cm), and backs usually run a little narrower than the seat. When the back rests on top of the seat cushion, subtract the seat thickness: a 21 in (53 cm) frame takes a 4 in seat and a 17 in (43 cm) back.

**The takeaway:** Back height equals frame height minus seat thickness, whenever the back sits on the seat.

> **Tailor's margin:** A back cushion resting on the seat: 21 in frame minus 4 in seat leaves a 17 in back.

## Seven numbers to take once the frame is finished

Tape, pencil, and a photo of each wall. Write every figure to the nearest 1/4 in and send them together. The [custom cushion quote](https://cushionguide.com/guides/custom-cushion-quote-what-to-send/) Pattern lists the rest, [back cushion height](https://cushionguide.com/guides/back-cushion-height-sizing/) covers the vertical, and [cushion covers for existing foam](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-covers-for-existing-foam/) handles the [cover-only](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#cover-only) case. Hinged bench? Read [storage bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/guides/storage-bench-cushion-hinged-lid/). For fabric, [performance fabrics](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/performance-and-pet-friendly/) earn their keep on the main seat, and [linen and cotton-linen](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-and-cotton-linen/) gives the look. Pull-out sofa beds follow the [daybed cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/daybed-cushions/) logic.

| Piece | What to measure | The rule |
|---|---|---|
| Seat base | Width x depth of the built platform | Measure the frame, never the plan |
| Back cushion | Wall width at back height; height from the top of the seat cushion | Often narrower than the seat: a 46.5 in back over a 48 in seat |
| Back resting on the seat | Frame height at the back | Subtract the seat thickness: 21 in minus 4 in = 17 in |
| Base over storage lids | Each lid separately | Split the cushion at every lid break and add ties |
| L-shaped couch | Both walls and the corner | One seat covers the corner and runs longer than its wall |
| Foam you already own | Length, width and thickness | Order a cover only, with all three dimensions |
| Reused filling | Fillable depth of each cover | State the depth and the tie positions up front |

> In a van, the back cushion is rarely as wide as the seat: one converted school bus needed a 46.5 in back over a 48 in seat.

## Backrest questions builders keep asking

**A common question:** Can you build a back cushion with a board inside so I can screw it to the wall or hang it on a French cleat?

**The workshop's answer:** Not normally. These cushions have no rigid board, so they can't be screwed to a wall or hung on a French cleat. The backrest is made like a back pillow instead: a removable piped cover over shredded foam about 4 in (10 cm) thick, or a solid foam core wrapped in fiber for a firmer, flatter panel. It attaches with hook-and-loop tape, adhesive, loops on a rod, or ties sewn to the top corners to hang from hooks or a rail.

**A common question:** Can I get back cushions that match my bench seat, and can I add them later?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Back cushions are made to any size in the same fabric as the seat. They can hold firm foam like the seat, structured and upright, or be a soft filled pillow, plumper and more relaxed; tell the workshop which look you want along with your sizes. One buyer added a matching window-seat back 90 in long, 11 in high and 3 in deep later by quoting the original fabric code.

**A common question:** I only need the back cushion. Can I order it without a seat?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Backrest-only orders are made in any size and color, for example seven banquette back pillows 14 in (36 cm) high and 3 in thick in lengths of 21, 26 and 27 in, or a single 13 x 50 in (33 x 127 cm) backrest. Round bolsters are sold separately too. A zippered, removable cover is possible only on a non-tufted backrest. It works the other way as well: seats are sold without backs.

**A common question:** Can I buy just the L-shaped corner backrests to put on my own mattress?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Each L-shaped backrest covers a 39 x 39 in (100 x 100 cm) corner and stands about 15 in high, so two span a 39 x 79 in sofa or turn a twin or a 75 x 38 in daybed into a sofa. They have no hook-and-loop tape or other attachments, so they work as standalone cushions. Metal bars are sold separately, and covers alone are available.

## Questions buyers ask next

### When is the right time to order cushions for a skoolie or van build?

After the frame is built. Conversions rarely match their plans, so measure the finished platform, the back wall and any lids, then order. One skoolie builder got a quote for two 75 x 26.5 in sofa-bed cushions early but waited for the bed frame before ordering, so the numbers were exact.

### My van cushion size isn't on the size menu. How do I order it?

Choose the nearest size in the dropdown, or the next larger one if you fall between options. Then write the exact dimensions, thickness, fabric code and piping code in the personalization box. The dropdown only sets the price bracket; the cushion is cut to the size you wrote.

### What keeps a van back cushion in place on the seat?

Ties, mostly. Fabric ties can be sewn into the seams at the corners or along the back, in any position, to fix a cushion to a bench or tie a backrest to its seat. Double piping also gives back cushions enough structure to stay put without straps.

### How thick should a van seat be if it is also the bed?

Thicker than the back. A buyer in the US chose 6 in (15 cm) seats with 5 in (13 cm) backs for a small L couch that doubles as a bed, so it would last. Many buyers pair a thick, firm seat with a thinner back, such as 4 in backs on an 8 in seat.
