# Screened porches and covered patios: where indoor fabric stops working

*A screened porch is outside pretending to be inside. Eight porches and patios from past orders, and the line where soft indoor cloth stops earning its keep.*

> **The quick answer:** Screened porch cushions should be made in outdoor fabric, because a screen keeps out bugs but not pollen, dust or humid air. Indoor linen, velvet and soft fabrics are fine only under a closed roof that rain and direct sun never reach. Skip chenille in humid air; outdoor fabric resists moisture, mildew and mold better. Bring every cushion indoors for the long off-season.

![Teal and white aztec-diamond outdoor seat and back cushions on a sage arbor bench framed by pink climbing roses](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/teal-aztec-arbor-bench-seat-back-cushions-rose-garden-1600.webp "A three-piece cushion set turns a painted rose arbor into a proper garden seat. The teal kilim diamond runs across the seat and both back pads, so the set reads as one piece.")

## The screen stops mosquitoes, not August

A screen keeps the mosquitoes out. It does nothing about the humidity.

That's the first thing I tell anyone shopping for **screened porch cushions**. A roof over your head is not the same as dry. Dew forms on still nights, pollen drifts through the mesh every spring, and a squall with wind behind it will find the far end of the bench. Rain doesn't negotiate.

My rule is short. Under a closed roof where rain and direct sun never reach, indoor linen, velvet and soft fabrics work, though none of them is waterproof. Once pollen, dust and humid air are part of the picture, the workshop recommends outdoor fabric and sends samples first. The eight porches and patios below are past orders.

Start at the [patio and porch cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/patio-and-porch-cushions/) hub, look across at [sunroom cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/sunroom-cushions/) for glassed-in rooms, and sketch your bench in the [bench cushion builder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/bench-cushion-builder/). Which does your porch get more of, friend: pollen in April or damp air in August?

## Eight porches and patios, and what each one got

### 01. Linen under a roof the rain barely reaches

![Brown, beige and white geometric seat cushion with two dark taupe back pillows on a gray bench on a fern-hung porch](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/brown-geometric-porch-bench-cushion-hanging-ferns-1024.webp "An earthy brown and beige geometric seat, dark taupe pillows and hanging ferns make a quiet covered porch corner in late light.")

A buyer wrote to the workshop about a covered balcony: sheltered from rain, but open to pollen, dust and a humid climate. Would an indoor linen cushion hold up? Where the roof keeps rain from reaching it, linen will work. Where pollen, dust and humid air move through, as on a screened porch, the workshop recommended outdoor fabric and offered samples first.

**The takeaway:** Judge the porch by what gets through the screen, not by the roof overhead.

> **Tailor's margin:** Indoor linen works under a roof rain barely reaches; once pollen, dust and humid air get in, use outdoor fabric.

### 02. Floor cushions for a second-story porch

![Terracotta, mustard and cream stripe seat cushion with two terracotta back pillows on a gray wood bench in a screened porch](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/terracotta-kilim-stripe-screened-porch-bench-cushion-1024.webp "Warm kilim stripes in terracotta, mustard and cream on a weathered bench in a screened porch, with plump terracotta pillows and succulents on the sill.")

A buyer in the US asked whether the workshop's floor cushions could live outside, on a covered second-story balcony and in a screened-in porch. Under a closed roof, the regular fabrics are fine. For anything open to the air the workshop makes the piece in outdoor fabric, and any piece can be made that way: seats, backrests, bolsters, screened porches included.

**The takeaway:** Choose the shape you want first; the outdoor fabric follows the shape.

> **Tailor's margin:** Any cushion shape, from floor cushion to bolster, can be made in outdoor fabric for a screened porch.

### 03. Chenille in air you can wear

![Stack of purple, slate gray and crimson velvet bench cushions with self piping on worn pine floorboards](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/purple-gray-crimson-velvet-bench-cushions-pine-floor-1536.webp "Long velvet bench pads in purple, slate and crimson, photographed on old pine to show how they sit in a warmer, darker room.")

A buyer messaged the workshop from somewhere very humid, worried about mold, and asked if the workshop's chenille would be all right outdoors. The workshop said no. Chenille is not recommended for permanent outdoor exposure, least of all in humid air, and the outdoor-performance fabrics resist moisture, mildew and mold better.

**The takeaway:** In humid air, keep the plush fabrics indoors and let outdoor cloth take the porch.

> **Tailor's margin:** If the porch air is humid all summer, skip chenille; outdoor fabric resists moisture, mildew and mold better.

### 04. A whole covered patio in green-and-white stripe

![White box cushion with tan and gray pinstripes on a teak dining bench, matching chair pads at a teak table](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/tan-gray-pinstripe-dining-bench-cushion-teak-terrace-1600.webp "A long pinstripe cushion on the dining bench matches the tied seat pads on the teak chairs across the table.")

A buyer in the US started with one cushion for an oval wicker loveseat with rounded corners, then added a chair and a full outdoor couch for her covered patio. The final set, in a green-and-white stripe with piping: a 17 x 20 in (43 x 51 cm) chair, a 37 x 19 in (94 x 48 cm) loveseat, three 17 in (43 cm) pillows, and three 20 x 20 in plus three 22 x 20 in (51 x 51 and 56 x 51 cm) couch pieces. It arrived before her party, and she told the workshop she cried because it all looked so beautiful.

**The takeaway:** Quote a covered patio as one set in one fabric, and put the event date on the order.

> **Tailor's margin:** Quote a covered patio as one set, 37 x 19 in loveseat included, with the party date on the order.

### 05. Three benches inside, one on the front porch

![Top-down view of a long red and cream striped bench cushion with a hardback book at the far end](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/red-cream-stripe-long-bench-cushion-overhead-1600.webp "An overhead check that every red stripe runs square to the edges along the full length.")

A buyer got in touch with three indoor built-in benches, 50 x 17, 48.5 x 17 and 49.25 x 17 in (127 x 43, 123 x 43 and 125 x 43 cm), four 20 x 20 in (51 x 51 cm) pillows and a lumbar, plus a front-porch bench with arms. Indoor fabric went inside; the porch bench got outdoor fabric with matching piping. That bench measured 43 in (109 cm) in front of the arms and 47 in (119 cm) behind, so the workshop held the order until the buyer said which span to make.

**The takeaway:** Choose indoor and porch fabrics separately, and decide yourself which span of an armed bench to order.

> **Tailor's margin:** On an armed porch bench, pick the span yourself: 43 in in front of the arms or 47 in behind.

### 06. Outdoor fabric that doesn't feel like a tarp

![Slate gray woven cushion on a curved-back teak garden bench with a blush pillow, knitted throw and tea mug by a rose wall](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/slate-gray-curved-garden-bench-cushion-roses-1600.webp "A slate cushion cut to a curved-back teak bench, softened with a blush pillow and a chunky cream throw.")

A buyer in the US wanted outdoor cushions but not the plastic, rubbery feel of cheap waterproof ones. The workshop's outdoor fabrics are not coated; they feel like proper woven cloth. They are a little firmer than indoor upholstery, closer to a good sun lounger cushion, which is worth knowing if you'll sit on them every day.

**The takeaway:** Ask for a sample and put a hand on it before you judge the feel.

> **Tailor's margin:** Good outdoor fabric feels like woven cloth, a little firmer than indoor upholstery, never like a tarp.

### 07. Indoor piping on an outdoor cushion

![Olive green outdoor bench cushion on a rustic wooden dining bench at a laid table under festoon lights at dusk](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/olive-green-outdoor-dining-bench-cushion-dusk-1600.webp "A long olive pad on a rustic dining bench, laid for dinner under string lights with linen napkins and olive branches.")

One buyer wrote in wanting an indoor-fabric piping color on outdoor cushions for a covered terrace. Indoor fabric isn't recommended out in the weather, but a terrace with no rain and no direct sun is a different case, so the workshop said yes. The order went through the outdoor listing, since the outdoor fabric sets the price, with the piping code written in the personalization box.

**The takeaway:** Under full cover, the trim can be indoor fabric as long as the body is outdoor cloth.

> **Tailor's margin:** Under a covered terrace with no rain or direct sun, indoor-fabric piping on an outdoor cushion is fine.

### 08. Storage benches, snowy winters, no quick-dry foam

![Close-up corner of a camel tan jumbo corduroy box cushion with self piping sitting on a cream painted storage bench](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/camel-corduroy-cushion-corner-cream-bench-1600.webp "Camel corduroy shows off its deep ribs in side light, and the piping is cut from the same cloth so the edge stays soft.")

A buyer in the US sent drawings of outdoor storage benches with lift-up lids, in a place with hot summers and snowy winters, and asked for the 3 in (7.6 cm) cushions split at the lid lines. One run was about 1.5 in (4 cm) different in depth from end to end, so the workshop asked for a full drawing of each piece. The workshop also told her plainly that it had no quick-dry foam and no mesh bottom as standard; its UV-resistant, water-repellent fabric suits a covered porch, or storage over the winter.

**The takeaway:** Split at every lid break, draw each piece on its own, and plan where the cushions go when the snow comes.

> **Tailor's margin:** Split a storage bench cushion at every lid line, and draw each piece separately if depths differ by 1.5 in.

## Where your porch sits on the weather line

Place your porch on this line before you pick a swatch. The [indoor cushions on a covered porch](https://cushionguide.com/guides/indoor-cushions-covered-porch/) Pattern has the long version, and [water-repellent vs waterproof](https://cushionguide.com/guides/water-repellent-vs-waterproof-cushions/) explains why the workshop's outdoor cloth is the first, not the second. Browse [outdoor fabrics](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/), [water-repellent fabrics](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/water-repellent-membrane/) and [linen and cotton-linen](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-and-cotton-linen/). On the [Florida Gulf Coast](https://cushionguide.com/places/florida-gulf-coast-cushions/), read the humid rows twice.

| The space | What reaches the cushion | What I'd recommend |
|---|---|---|
| Covered porch or balcony with a closed roof | No rain, no direct sun | Indoor linen, velvet or soft fabric; none of them is waterproof |
| Screened porch | Pollen, dust and humid air | Outdoor fabric, with samples first |
| Humid climate, cushions out all season | Moisture that lingers | No chenille; outdoor fabric resists moisture, mildew and mold better |
| Covered terrace with outdoor cushions | No rain, no direct sun | Outdoor body; indoor-fabric piping is acceptable |
| Open patio or deck | Rain showers, spills, full sun | Outdoor fabric only; bring cushions indoors for the long off-season |

## What comes in when the season turns

- ✓ Every outdoor cushion, for any long off-season. Water-resistant cloth handles showers, not a whole winter.
- ✓ Any indoor linen, velvet or soft-fabric cushion that summered on the porch. None of them is waterproof.
- ✓ The covers, for a wash at 86°F (30°C) before storage.
- ✓ The fabric code, written down, so a replacement or matching chair pad comes out in the same cloth next spring.

> A screened porch is outside with a roof on: pollen, dust and humid air still reach the cushions, so they get outdoor fabric, not indoor linen.

## Porch and patio questions

**A common question:** Our porch has a solid roof. Will regular indoor cushions hold up out there?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, if the roof is closed and rain and direct sun never reach the seat. Linen, velvet and the soft fabrics are fine there, though none is waterproof, and the workshop checks that the area really is covered before recommending them. A screened porch that gets pollen, dust and humidity, or any open-air spot, should get outdoor fabric, and samples can go out first. Any piece, from seat to backrest to bolster, can be made in it.

**A common question:** Is your outdoor fabric truly waterproof, or only water-resistant?

**The workshop's answer:** Water-resistant, in plain terms. The outdoor range is a water-repellent fabric, not a sealed or coated one: it handles rain showers and spills well and stands up to the weather, and outdoor seats and backs get outdoor-suitable inserts. Like any outdoor textile, the cushions should come indoors for long off-season stretches. On a bigger patio job you can order a single cushion first to check the fit.

**A common question:** Could I put your linen, velvet or chenille cushions outdoors?

**The workshop's answer:** No. Fabrics on the indoor listings, linen, velvet and chenille included, aren't made for open-air use, and chenille especially isn't recommended for permanent exposure in humid climates. Order outdoor cushions through the outdoor listing, where every color is outdoor-rated, water-repellent and UV-resistant and any color and piping combination is possible. Indoor orders placed by mistake for outdoor use have been cancelled and refunded so they could be reordered correctly.

**A common question:** How many outdoor fabrics are there, and why are they on different charts?

**The workshop's answer:** Close to 200, spread over 4 to 5 charts on the outdoor listing. All are water-resistant, UV- and fade-resistant and meant to stay out all summer, and all are woven cloth rather than vinyl. They share the same quality; the charts differ only in texture, color tone and pattern. Outdoor orders can include foam filling, a non-slip base and piping, and close-up photos are available for any code.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Do you make screened porch cushions with quick-dry foam or a mesh bottom?

Not as standard. Buyers ask for both, along with branded outdoor acrylics, and the workshop stocks no quick-dry foam; a mesh base has been built on request for some projects, so ask about yours. What it offers as standard is a UV-resistant, water-repellent outdoor fabric with outdoor-suitable inserts, which suits a covered or screened porch. Bring the cushions in for winter; the [winter storage Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/outdoor-cushion-care-winter-storage/) has the routine.

### How do I match chair pads to an outdoor bench cushion on the porch?

Pick one code from the outdoor charts and write it in the personalization box of each listing you order from, or order straight from the outdoor listing. The bench, the chair pads and any square cushions then come out in the same outdoor fabric. The outdoor charts are sent on request.

### Which indoor fabric is easiest to keep clean on a fully covered porch?

Soft fabric, a performance microfiber: durable, smooth, and it doesn't collect dust or lint. Velvet is also easy to clean and pet-friendly, and there are water-resistant, wipe-clean charts. Covers wash at 86°F (30°C). Compare them in [performance and pet-friendly fabrics](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/performance-and-pet-friendly/).

### Can I test one outdoor cushion before ordering for the whole porch?

Yes. For a bigger patio or porch project you can order a single cushion first to check the fit and the feel of the outdoor fabric, then order the rest. Close-up photos of any outdoor code are available before you choose, and physical samples can be sent.
