# Playroom corner cushions in odd shapes: trapezoids, hexagons, quarter-rounds

*Children find the corners adults leave empty. Nine playroom shapes buyers sent the workshop, and the two or three numbers each one needed.*

> **The quick answer:** A playroom corner cushion is a floor seat cut to the exact shape of the corner, ordered from a drawing with every edge measured. Quarter-rounds are sized by their two straight sides, hexagons by point-to-point and flat-to-flat widths, trapezoids by each side on its own. For small hands, soft fabric or velvet with a zippered cover wears best and cleans easiest.

## The corners children choose

Adults furnish the middle of a room. Children go straight for the corners: under the window, inside the climbing frame, at the back of the reading tunnel.

A playroom corner cushion has to follow that choice, and few of those corners are rectangles. The playroom shapes that come up most are quarter-rounds, trapezoids and the occasional hexagon.

The nine below are real [corner floor cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/corner-floor-cushions/) and [trapezoid cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/trapezoid-cushions/) from [kids' rooms](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/kids-room-cushions/).

One plain line first. Floor cushions are for awake play, reading and lounging, not for a baby's sleep.

What shape is the corner your child keeps choosing?

## Nine corners, nine shapes

### 01. Black ticking window seats and one angled seat

![Taupe and white awning-stripe corner floor pouf with backrest pillows under a round black mirror by a walnut dresser](https://cushionguide.com/media/corner-floor-cushions/taupe-stripe-corner-floor-seat-round-mirror-bedroom-1600.webp "Wide taupe stripes on a quarter-round floor seat, finished with an ivory welt, beside a walnut chest of drawers.")

A buyer in the US had a playroom with five window seats and one angled seat. The first plan was black ticking with brown velvet trim, and the buyer asked for photos of finished cushions before choosing a ticking, since one stripe runs wider. The quote covered five cushions at 24.5 x 40 in (62 x 102 cm) and two at 24 x 28 x 28 in (61 x 71 x 71 cm) on the custom-shape listing.

**The takeaway:** Judge stripe width on a finished cushion. Ticking is 100% cotton and marks more easily than velvet.

> **Tailor's margin:** Cotton ticking with velvet piping works on a playroom window seat; check stripe width on a finished cushion first.

### 02. Two tufted trapezoids with unequal angles

![Gray and gold leaf-print corner floor cushion with backrest pillows between potted palms and a lit table lamp](https://cushionguide.com/media/corner-floor-cushions/leaf-print-corner-floor-seat-palms-living-room-1600.webp "The same leaf print moves into a greener living room, surrounded by palms, a snake plant and a warm lamp.")

A buyer got in touch needing two tufted floor seats for spaces with different angles. The workshop confirmed both were trapezoids, not rectangles, and asked for a hand drawing with every side labeled. They were made as a pair in white and blue velvet with center buttons.

**The takeaway:** Two corners that look alike rarely are. Tufted covers do not come off, so plan to wipe them by hand.

> **Tailor's margin:** Two trapezoid floor seats with different angles need two drawings, every side labeled, even when they look like a pair.

### 03. A hexagon inside a play structure

![Bright orange gingham corner floor pouf with backrest pillows in a sage paneled art corner with easel and rattan chair](https://cushionguide.com/media/corner-floor-cushions/orange-gingham-corner-pouf-sage-art-corner-1600.webp "A tangerine check floor seat set up as a creative corner, beside an easel, a shelf of brushes and a cane armchair.")

A buyer in the US wanted a hexagon cushion about 4 x 4.6 ft (122 x 140 cm) for a play structure roughly 55 x 55 in (140 x 140 cm). The workshop sent a reference drawing with two places to mark: point to point, and flat to flat. Nothing else was needed.

**The takeaway:** In a regular hexagon, flat to flat is about 0.87 of point to point; 4 ft against 4.6 ft checks out.

> **Tailor's margin:** A hexagon floor cushion needs just two numbers: point to point across the corners, flat to flat across the sides.

### 04. Three 50 in quarter-rounds in pinks

![Gray corduroy corner floor cushion under a gray canopy with pink flower, star and cloud pillows, ringed rug, plush elephant](https://cushionguide.com/media/corner-floor-cushions/gray-corduroy-corner-floor-cushion-nursery-canopy-1536.webp "Soft gray corduroy lets the blush flower pillow and the gray-and-cream rug carry the color in this calm nursery corner.")

A buyer in the US wanted three large quarter-rounds in pinks for a girls' play and reading corner, one with a ruffle. Ruffles are not made, so the workshop offered a double layer in contrasting colors. The order became three plain 50 in (127 cm) cushions in soft fabric on 6.5 in (16.5 cm) foam, then a fourth in fuchsia.

**The takeaway:** When a detail cannot be sewn, ask what can.

> **Tailor's margin:** The workshop doesn't sew ruffles on quarter-round corner cushions; a double layer in a contrasting color is offered instead.

### 05. A round reading tunnel with a curved floor

![Teal corduroy corner floor cushion beneath a mint tulle canopy with cream star and cloud pillows, knit throw and round rug](https://cushionguide.com/media/corner-floor-cushions/teal-corduroy-corner-floor-cushion-mint-canopy-1536.webp "A saturated teal base under a paler mint canopy makes a two-step color gradient that keeps the corner fresh.")

A parent wrote to the workshop about a round reading tunnel in a children's cabinet: 37.4 in (95 cm) across, 18 in (46 cm) deep, the seat 6 in (15 cm) above the lowest point. The cushion needed a flat top about 27 x 18 in (69 x 46 cm) over a curved underside, like a slice off a cylinder, in medium-firm foam with a zippered cover. The cut foam waited until an oatmeal linen-look fabric was chosen.

**The takeaway:** Send the diameter, the depth and the seat height above the lowest point. The flat top follows.

> **Tailor's margin:** In a 37.4 in round tunnel, a seat 6 in above the lowest point is about 27 in wide.

### 06. A half circle from two quarter-rounds

![Chocolate brown corduroy quarter-round floor cushion in a child's corner with ivory canopy, star and cloud pillows, jute rug](https://cushionguide.com/media/corner-floor-cushions/chocolate-corduroy-corner-floor-cushion-ivory-canopy-1536.webp "Deep brown corduroy anchors a pale canopy and cream pillows, so the reading corner looks like furniture rather than a pile of cushions.")

A buyer in the US wanted a half-circle floor seat against a flat blue wall, where a plant and a stack of records used to stand, and sent a photo first. The workshop confirmed that two quarter-circle corner cushions side by side make a half circle, and that mustard velvet would work well.

**The takeaway:** A corner cushion does not need a corner.

> **Tailor's margin:** Two quarter-circle corner cushions side by side make a half-circle floor seat on any flat wall.

### 07. A kids' couch for a very small bedroom

![Warm beige gingham corner floor pouf with two backrest pillows in a white box-paneled corner, brass floor lamp and window](https://cushionguide.com/media/corner-floor-cushions/warm-beige-check-corner-pouf-brass-floor-lamp-1600.webp "A checked quarter-round pouf tucked beside a window, with a brass lamp for reading and a small black table for a cup.")

A parent in the US asked for the kids' floor couch at 29.5 x 29.5 in (75 x 75 cm) with a 17.3 in (44 cm) seat height, for a small bedroom. The workshop pointed to the standard size and a longer version. The parent chose the standard, in yellow, shipped for a day someone would be home.

**The takeaway:** Tape the standard footprint on the floor first. Leave a hand's width of floor around it.

> **Tailor's margin:** Tape the kids' floor couch footprint down first; a parent who asked for 29.5 in square kept the standard.

### 08. A corner seat with backrest pillows

![Camel tan gingham corner floor pouf with two backrest pillows against blush molded paneling, pink roses and white lamp](https://cushionguide.com/media/corner-floor-cushions/camel-check-corner-pouf-blush-paneled-wall-1600.webp "Tan checks on blush walls, with pink roses, a bouclé pouf and a white dome floor lamp keeping the palette soft.")

Several buyers, in the US and elsewhere, have asked for a corner floor seat with backrests. The workshop checks whether the numbers are wall lengths or cushion lengths, and asks for the height from the floor to the top of the backrest. One end can be widened for an open corner, and matching back pillows added.

**The takeaway:** Write wall or cushion next to every number.

> **Tailor's margin:** For a corner floor cushion with backrests, send wall lengths and one height: floor to the top of the backrest.

### 09. Soft fabric for small hands

![Oatmeal corduroy corner floor cushion under a mint green canopy with cloud, blush star and taupe pillows and plush bunny](https://cushionguide.com/media/corner-floor-cushions/oatmeal-corduroy-corner-cushion-mint-canopy-jute-1536.webp "A neutral oat base lets the mint canopy and blush star do the color work, so the cushion can outlast a change of theme.")

Parents and grandparents in the US ask it in many forms: a playroom window seat, a reading nook for grandsons, a two-year-old's bedroom. Most floor sofas the workshop makes are bought for children, and the answer is soft fabric, very durable and very easy to clean, with velvet next. Custom pieces have gone into toddlers' bedrooms, a kids' tent and a toy-box lid.

**The takeaway:** Choose a zippered style for the washer; zipperless and tufted cushions are spot-cleaned.

> **Tailor's margin:** Soft fabric is the playroom floor cushion pick: very durable, easy to clean, zip-off covers wash at 86°F (30°C).

## What to measure for each playroom shape

Every shape here is ordered with a drawing. The [trapezoid cushion calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/trapezoid-cushion-calculator/) checks that the sides close; [quarter-circle corner sizes](https://cushionguide.com/guides/corner-floor-cushion-quarter-circle-size/) and [curved cushions](https://cushionguide.com/guides/curved-cushion-chord-rise-radius/) go deeper.

| Shape | Send these numbers | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Quarter-round | The two straight sides | Standard sizes reach 48 in (122 cm) a side, an arc of about 75.4 in (191.5 cm); 50 in has been made |
| Half circle | One radius, ordered as two quarter-rounds | Sits against a flat wall; no corner needed |
| Hexagon | Point to point and flat to flat, marked on the workshop's reference drawing | In a regular hexagon, flat to flat is about 0.87 of point to point |
| Trapezoid | Every side separately, plus the straight depth | An angled side is always longer than the depth |
| Curved floor | Diameter, depth, and seat height above the lowest point | Add a photo and describe the cross-section |
| Clipped corner | How far each corner cuts in, along both sides | Cut exactly to the drawing |

## Thickness, zippers, and three lines

Thickness sets how a corner sits. The 50 in quarter-rounds used 6.5 in (16.5 cm) foam, the kids' corner floor sofa cushion is about 8 in (20 cm), and the thinnest foam the workshop cuts is 2 in (5 cm). The [foam firmness finder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/foam-firmness-finder/) helps with the rest.

For cleaning, the zipper decides. Zippered covers wash at 86°F (30°C) on a delicate cycle; tufted covers are wiped with a damp cloth. More in [kid-friendly cushion fabric](https://cushionguide.com/guides/kid-friendly-cushion-fabric/), [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/) and [velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/).

A corner is a choice.
The cushion follows it.
Measure the corner, not the child.

## Shapes and small hands:

**A common question:** Could you make a floor cushion shaped to fit a corner or a reading nook in our playroom?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send the shape and measurements before ordering, with a few room photos from a distance and a sketch, so everything is agreed first; the workshop says up front if a size-based customization fee applies. A curve is calculated from its two straight sides, and a hexagon in a play structure needs just two measurements on a reference drawing. One end can be widened for an open corner.

**A common question:** Our playroom seat isn't a rectangle. Which listing do I order it on?

**The workshop's answer:** The custom-shape (trapezoid) listing. Choose the size range by the longest length and the deepest depth; that only sets the price bracket. At checkout, upload a drawing with a measurement on every edge, plus a photo if you have one, and put the thickness and fabric code in the personalization box. The cushion is cut to the drawing, not to the totals, and each distinct shape is its own order with its own drawing.

**A common question:** How do I get marks off a tufted playroom cushion that can't go in the washer?

**The workshop's answer:** Clean it where it sits. Wipe the surface gently with a damp cloth, and use mild soap and water on marks. The soft fabric range wipes clean most easily. If machine washing matters more, order the untufted foam version, which has a zippered, removable cover.

**A common question:** We have small kids and a dog. Which fabric should the playroom cushions be?

**The workshop's answer:** Soft fabric or velvet. Velvet is the most stain-resistant, soft fabric is the easiest to spot-clean, and both are the most durable in the range. The striped fabrics are 100% cotton and stain more easily. If the dog will be on the cushion constantly, choose from the pet-friendly chart. Zippered covers come off and wash at 86°F (30°C) on a delicate cycle.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can a toddler nap on a corner floor cushion?

Floor cushions are made for awake play, reading and lounging. Naps and night sleep belong in a crib, bassinet or play yard, on the firm, flat mattress made for it, with no pillows or soft bedding around the child.

### How thick should a playroom corner cushion be?

Real playroom pieces sit thick. Three 50 in quarter-rounds used 6.5 in (16.5 cm) foam, and the kids' corner floor sofa cushion is about 8 in (20 cm). The thinnest foam the workshop cuts is 2 in (5 cm), closer to a pad than a floor seat.

### What if the two walls of my playroom corner are different lengths?

Measure each wall on its own and send both numbers with a photo. A shape that is not a true quarter circle goes on the custom-shape listing with a drawing, and one end of a corner cushion can be widened for an open-corner layout.

### Can a trapezoid floor seat be button-tufted?

Yes. A pair of tufted trapezoids in white and blue velvet with center buttons was set up as a custom option on the velvet listing. Tufted covers cannot come off, so they are wiped clean by hand rather than machine washed.
