# Dogs on the bench, cats on the banquette: pet-friendly bench cushions that cope

*No fabric stops a determined claw, and I won't pretend otherwise. What I can do is pick a weave that shrugs, a piping that hides the scuffs and a zipper that lets you flip the evidence.*

> **The quick answer:** A pet-friendly bench cushion uses a tight, loop-free weave, such as a high-rub polyester, in a zippered cover you can wash at 86°F (30°C). No fabric stops every claw, but tight weaves snag far less than looped bouclé and stand up to jumping dogs better than linen. Add double or contrast piping to hide edge wear, and zip the long back edge so the cushion flips.

![Sage green L-shaped pet-friendly cushion on a white corner mudroom bench, golden retriever seated below brass coat hooks](https://cushionguide.com/media/l-shaped-cushions/sage-l-shaped-mudroom-corner-bench-cushion-golden-retriever-1600.webp "Sage sits comfortably between the golden dog, the white beadboard and the gray terrazzo, and forgives muddy-paw days.")

## No fabric stops a claw. Some fabrics shrug it off.

No fabric on earth stops a determined claw, and anyone who promises otherwise has never met a cat at 3 a.m. What a **pet-friendly bench cushion** can do is make the claw's job boring: a tight, loop-free weave with nothing to hook, a cover that zips off for the wash, and piping that takes the scuffs so the top doesn't have to.

Years ago I'd have put linen on every bench in New England. The dogs have since corrected me. Pets turn up on kitchen benches, banquettes, window seats and floor sofas alike, and the nine sketches below come straight from homes like that.

Start with the [pet-friendly cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/pet-friendly-cushions/) in the Atlas, then the [performance and pet-friendly fabrics](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/performance-and-pet-friendly/) in the Swatch Library. If you already know your run, the [bench cushion builder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/bench-cushion-builder/) takes the length, depth and thickness. So, dear: who naps on your bench while you're out, the dog or the cat?

## Nine benches and the animals who signed off on them

### 01. Two cats and a 138 5/8 in kitchen bench

![Gray and white striped box cushion on a long oak storage banquette beside a table set with linen and white plates](https://cushionguide.com/media/banquette-cushions/gray-white-stripe-oak-dining-banquette-cushion-1600.webp "A single long striped cushion softens an oak storage banquette without breaking its clean line.")

A buyer in the US with two grown cats asked for a fabric the cats wouldn't fancy scratching. The kitchen bench cushion came out at 21 x 138 5/8 x 2 in (53 x 352 x 5 cm), well over 11 feet, in a tight-weave pet fabric with double piping. The zipper runs along the long side so the cushion can be flipped now and then.

**The takeaway:** With pets, put the zipper on the long back edge; a cushion you can flip wears evenly on both faces.

> **Tailor's margin:** A bench cushion zipped along the long back edge can be flipped, so one face never takes every paw.

### 02. Two dogs in an oatmeal-and-charcoal room

![Cream bouclé, teal-and-charcoal woven stripe and sage bouclé box cushions stacked on a solid oak bench](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/cream-teal-stripe-sage-box-cushions-oak-bench-1600.webp "Plain edges let the textures meet: nubby bouclé above and below a flat-woven teal stripe.")

A buyer in the US asked whether linen could survive two dogs jumping on the bench. The workshop steered them to a wipe-clean polyester rated 88,000 Martindale rubs, about 10.9 oz/yd² (370 g/m²), matched to their oatmeal, with a contrasting piping. It warned that the darkest charcoal on the chart reads nearly black, and they added a non-slip base.

**The takeaway:** Linen is a natural-look fabric, not a performance one; for dogs that jump, choose a high-rub polyester.

> **Tailor's margin:** For dogs who jump on the bench, an 88,000-rub polyester outlasts linen and wipes clean.

### 03. A U-shaped banquette in pet-friendly taupe

![Stack of three box cushions on concrete: moss green with mustard piping, oatmeal with rust, burgundy with light gray](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/stacked-box-cushions-contrast-piping-pairings-1536.webp "Three color pairings in one stack: moss with mustard, oatmeal herringbone with rust, and burgundy with pale gray piping.")

A buyer got in touch needing welted taupe cushions for a U-shaped banquette in a home with pets. The runs were two 63.5 x 21.5 in (161 x 55 cm) sides and one 93.5 x 21.5 in (237 x 55 cm) back, all 2 in (5 cm) thick. Each run is ordered as its own straight cushion on the same listing, with piping as standard.

**The takeaway:** Order a U-shaped banquette as three straight cushions, one per run, each in its own zippered cover.

> **Tailor's margin:** A U-shaped banquette is three straight cushions: two 63.5 in sides and one 93.5 in back.

### 04. A 112 in angled window seat with a dog underfoot

![Mustard yellow linen-look bench cushion on a light oak drawer bench with olive velvet and boucle pillows beside a fig tree](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/mustard-bench-cushion-light-oak-drawer-bench-fig-1536.webp "Mustard, olive and peach sit side by side on the color wheel, which is why this sunlit bench feels warm but easy.")

A buyer got in touch about a 112 in (284 cm) angled window seat in a home with a dog. They chose linen, in a cover that washes at 86°F (30°C). The scale drawing they sent was the real hero: it showed the corners weren't square.

**The takeaway:** If you keep linen with a dog, choose it for the wash, and send a scale drawing of any angled seat.

> **Tailor's margin:** An angled window seat needs a scale drawing; a 112 in seat looked square until the drawing proved otherwise.

### 05. Forest green or burnt orange velvet for cats and kids

![Forest green bouclé cushion on a freestanding walnut bench by a window onto a Paris street, with cream and cognac pillows](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/forest-green-boucle-bench-cushion-paris-window-928.webp "A forest green bouclé cushion on a freestanding walnut bench, styled like a small study corner in a Paris apartment.")

A designer in the US asked whether velvet or linen suited a client with cats and small children. The workshop recommended velvet: easy to clean, pet-friendly and washable at 86°F (30°C) or cooler. The workshop's standard swatches are only about 1.5 in (3 to 4 cm), so the designer ordered 4 x 4 in (10 x 10 cm) squares in forest green, burnt orange, emerald and yellow through the samples listing, with a note.

**The takeaway:** For a client meeting or a family vote, ask for 4 in squares; a thumbnail swatch tells a cat nothing.

> **Tailor's margin:** Velvet suits a banquette shared with cats and kids: it cleans easily and washes at 86°F (30°C) or cooler.

### 06. A caramel velvet bench the pets use every day

![Cream bouclé box cushion corner with caramel contrast piping resting on a honey oak plinth bench](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/cream-boucle-bench-cushion-caramel-piping-oak-1600.webp "Cream seat, caramel welt: the darker edge keeps a pale cushion looking crisp.")

A buyer wrote in wanting a boxed velvet bench cushion of about 84.4 x 23.6 in (214.5 x 60 cm) in warm caramel, with same-fabric piping, high-density foam in a Dacron wrap and a hidden zipper, firm enough for pets. They wavered between 2 and 2.75 in (5 and 7 cm). The workshop recommended 3 in (7.5 cm), the thickness most of its buyers prefer.

**The takeaway:** At 3 in (7.5 cm), a bench cushion stays firm and tailored under paws and still sits comfortably.

> **Tailor's margin:** A 3 in velvet bench cushion on high-density foam stays firm and tailored, even with pets on it daily.

### 07. Three wipe-clean pieces for a family that spills

![Navy tropical-flower box cushion on an oak-veneer drawer bench with coral, teal and mustard pillows and a kilim rug](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/bright-tropical-cushion-oak-drawer-bench-kilim-1600.webp "Terrazzo, a terracotta kilim and a tropical cushion bring holiday color to an open-plan kitchen corner.")

A family wrote to the workshop about a banquette that meets messy kids every single day. They chose a water-resistant, wipe-clean fabric and had the run made in three pieces, each 2 in (5 cm) thick. Wipe-clean handles the spill at supper; the zippered covers handle it on wash day.

**The takeaway:** Where spills are daily, ask for water-resistant, wipe-clean fabric, or a water-resistant inner liner under the cover.

> **Tailor's margin:** Where kids spill daily, a banquette in water-resistant, wipe-clean fabric, cut in three 2 in pieces, keeps up.

### 08. A corduroy floor-sofa ottoman on the dog's side of the room

![Rust bouclé box cushion on a splayed-leg oak bench in a blush pink room, cream and dusty pink pillows, palm tree outside](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/rust-boucle-bench-cushion-blush-pink-lisbon-room-1600.webp "Rust on blush pink: a tonal Lisbon scheme in which the cushion is the deepest note.")

A family wrote to the workshop about a living room shared with a dog and chose a floor-sofa ottoman in corduroy. The workshop's corduroy sits on the short list of three fabrics picked for pet homes, for its resilience and easy cleaning. Under very hard daily use, though, corduroy ribs can split.

**The takeaway:** Corduroy suits a spot the dog naps on; for heavy daily wear, velvet or a performance weave is the sturdier pick.

> **Tailor's margin:** Corduroy is one of three fabrics picked for pet homes, but under hard daily use its ribs can split.

### 09. Contrast piping where the paws land first

![Close-up of a burgundy bouclé box cushion with forest green contrast piping on a dark walnut bench](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/burgundy-boucle-bench-cushion-forest-green-piping-1600.webp "Wine and forest green: a contrast welt that feels traditional in a hallway yet still current.")

A buyer got in touch for a dog cushion of 31.5 x 17.7 x 3 in (80 x 45 x 7.5 cm) with slightly rounded corners: firm, hard-wearing, washable and fade-resistant, in light brown with rust or dark-brown piping. The workshop sent the pet-friendly chart, washable up to 86°F (30°C), and suggested a beige body with rust-brown piping. The piping does honest work at the edges, where wear shows first.

**The takeaway:** Choose contrast piping darker than the body; it hides the scuffs along the edges.

> **Tailor's margin:** Rust-brown contrast piping on a beige pet cushion hides edge wear where paws and noses land first.

## Maggie's checklist before the dog gets a vote

A straight welt is a kind of honesty, and so is a fabric chart that admits what it can't do. This is what I check on every bench that will share its life with fur. The [pet-friendly fabric](https://cushionguide.com/guides/pet-friendly-cushion-fabric/) Pattern goes deeper on weaves, [zipper placement](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-zipper-placement/) covers which edge to open, and the [dog beds and cat corners](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/custom-dog-beds-and-cat-corners/) sketches carry the same fabric onto the floor.

- ✓ A tight, loop-free weave. Claws catch on loops, so bouclé and teddy stay in rooms the cat never visits.
- ✓ A high rub count where dogs jump: the pet polyester in these sketches is rated 88,000 Martindale.
- ✓ Velvet or high-rub polyester over linen for heavy daily use; linen is a natural-look fabric, not a performance one.
- ✓ A mid-tone such as oatmeal, taupe or caramel, rather than stark white or near-black.
- ✓ A zipper on the long back edge, so the cover comes off and the cushion can be rotated and flipped.
- ✓ Double or contrast piping, to hide wear along the edges where paws land.
- ✓ A non-slip base or ties on narrow benches, so the cushion stays put when the dog launches.
- ✓ A water-resistant inner liner if spills or accidents are likely.
- ✓ Swatches first, and let the cat inspect them before you commit.

## Claws, paws and wash day:

**A common question:** My cats claw the furniture. Which cushion fabric will hold up best?

**The workshop's answer:** No fabric is safe from a determined claw, but tightly woven, loop-free fabrics snag much less, because claws catch on loops, and most of the workshop's charts are tight weaves without loops; bouclé and teddy are the exceptions. For cats, the first pick is the pet-friendly chart: tight, less tempting to scratch and more durable, with good taupes and neutrals. A corduroy on the short pet list is another option. Order swatches so you, and the cats, can test the texture.

**A common question:** Will linen survive a dog who jumps up and lies on the bench all day?

**The workshop's answer:** Linen is a natural-look fabric and not the first pick for dogs. The pet-friendly collection stands up to claws, jumping and everyday wear much better and cleans more easily, so the workshop suggests it for benches and bay windows where a dog likes to lie. For an entry bench where big dogs pass in and out all day, outdoor fabric is the most rugged choice.

**A common question:** With kids and pets in the house, which fabric is easiest to keep clean?

**The workshop's answer:** The first question is whether the cushion lives indoors or out. Indoors, the soft performance fabric is the workshop's top easy-care pick: durable, smooth, fine in high-traffic rooms, and it doesn't collect dust or lint. Velvet is also easy to clean and pet-friendly, and there are water-resistant, wipe-clean charts. Outdoors, use the water-repellent range. Covers wash at 86°F (30°C).

**A common question:** Could you make a dog bed or a cat cushion to match my bench cushions?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Dog beds are made to your measurements, with rounded corners, contrast piping or the same fabric as your bench. The pet-friendly chart washes at up to 86°F (30°C). Thick velvet cat cushions about 24 to 25 in (61 to 64 cm) square and 12 in (30 cm) high have been made, and about 28 x 64 in (71 x 163 cm) fits a person plus one large dog.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Where should the zipper go on a bench cushion in a home with pets?

On the long back edge, facing the wall. Every foam cushion comes with a zippered, fully removable cover, and a zipper on the long side lets you take the cover off for the wash and rotate or flip the cushion so one face doesn't take all the wear.

### Is double piping worth it on a bench the dog uses?

Often, yes. Double and contrast piping hide wear along the edges, where paws, noses and leashes land first. On back cushions, double piping also adds enough structure to help them stay upright without straps.

### How do I stop a bench cushion sliding when the dog jumps up?

Ask for a non-slip base or ties when you order; both are added on request, so put it in writing. One household with two dogs added a non-slip base to its bench cushion. On a lift-up storage lid, split the cushion at each lid break and tie each piece on.

### Can I get velvet swatches big enough to show a client?

Yes. Standard swatches are only about 1.5 in (3 to 4 cm). A designer in the US ordered 4 x 4 in (10 x 10 cm) velvet squares through the samples listing, with a note naming the colors. The sample fee mainly covers shipping, and in past orders it has been credited against a later purchase.
