# Reading nook cushions for classrooms and kids' corners

*Teachers and parents write to the workshop with a tape measure in one hand and a deadline in the other. Here are eight reading corners, from a three-wall classroom to one little girl's salmon round, and what each one taught the cutting table.*

> **The quick answer:** Classroom reading nook cushions work best as corner or wall-by-wall floor cushions in a wipe-clean fabric with zippered covers. Size a corner by its two straight sides: 40 x 40 in (102 x 102 cm) seats two toddlers, and 48 x 48 in (122 x 122 cm) is the standard maximum. Ask for 5 to 6 in (13 to 15 cm) of foam, and price the whole plan first.

## The first morning is the real test

A reading corner gets its real test on the first morning, when every child in the room tries to land in it at once. Kids and dogs are the real quality control. So when teachers and parents write to the workshop about classroom reading nook cushions, the workshop talks walls, wipes and the whole bill before it ever talks color.

On my grandmother's porch, the best seat was the one nobody had to be told to sit in. A [reading nook cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/reading-nook-cushions/) works the same way: a shape that fits the corner, a cover that forgives, and enough foam that a small body sinks in without bottoming out.

Most classroom corners start as a [corner floor cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/corner-floor-cushions/), a quarter-round sized by its two straight sides. Bigger rooms go wall by wall, with seats and backrests. At home, [kids' room cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/kids-room-cushions/) run smaller, and the covers that wipe clean live among the [performance and pet-friendly fabrics](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/performance-and-pet-friendly/). So tell me, neighbor: how many children will pile into your corner at once?

## Eight reading corners, wall by wall

### 01. A teacher's three walls, one of them with a heater

![Sky blue and yellow striped corner floor cushion with backrest pillows against a terracotta color-block wall](https://cushionguide.com/media/corner-floor-cushions/sky-blue-yellow-stripe-corner-floor-seat-kids-room-1600.webp "A sunny striped floor seat sits against a half-painted terracotta wall, joined by a bentwood chair and a pastel rainbow rug.")

A teacher in the US measured three walls: a blank 60 in (152 cm) wall, a 47.5 in (121 cm) sink wall and a heater wall that had to stay clear. Together with the workshop, the teacher planned two seats with backrests and round armrests, both 24 in (61 cm) deep, plus three 24 x 24 in (61 x 61 cm) squares for the heater side, in five colors from yellow and fuchsia to tobacco and red. The teacher cancelled at the total, having read the listing's low 'from' price, which was for a fabric swatch, as the price of each cushion.

**The takeaway:** Price the whole plan before you fall for the colors; the lowest price on a listing is often a swatch.

> **Tailor's margin:** A heater wall in a reading corner takes loose 24 x 24 in squares, not a seat with a backrest.

### 02. A 46 x 46 in smoke-gray corner for a classroom

![Charcoal corduroy quarter-circle corner floor cushion under a cream fairy-light canopy with star, cloud and moon pillows](https://cushionguide.com/media/corner-floor-cushions/charcoal-corduroy-quarter-round-corner-floor-pouf-1536.webp "A charcoal cord quarter-circle turns the corner into a den, with star, cloud and moon pillows under the lights.")

A teacher in the US compared the listing photos and chose a 46 x 46 in (117 x 117 cm) quarter-round in smoke gray. After ordering, she asked for waterproof. The workshop's standard fabrics aren't waterproof, so it offered a water-repellent collection and she picked the closest color. When it arrived she wrote that she absolutely loved it and that it would look perfect in her classroom.

**The takeaway:** For a classroom, ask for water-repellent fabric; it cleans up far more easily than standard velvet or linen.

> **Tailor's margin:** A classroom corner cushion in water-repellent fabric cleans up far more easily than standard velvet or linen.

### 03. Five matching velvet floor seats for a daycare

![Chocolate brown jumbo-cord kids floor sofa with a yellow daisy pillow and powder blue star, toy blocks in the foreground](https://cushionguide.com/media/kids-floor-sofas/chocolate-jumbo-cord-kids-floor-sofa-daisy-1600.webp "Chocolate cord is a forgiving color, a deep base that hides everyday marks under bright pillows.")

A buyer wrote to the workshop wanting five velvet floor sets for a nursery or daycare, each a seat plus a backrest at 28 x 30 x 8 in (71 x 76 x 20 cm), and asked the workshop to confirm that meant ten pieces. It did. The workshop offered a wholesale rate per set and told them the seats are firm, because the silicone-ball fill is packed tightly with no sponge.

**The takeaway:** One size repeated five times keeps the peace and earns a set rate; count the seat and back as two pieces.

> **Tailor's margin:** Five daycare floor sets of 28 x 30 x 8 in make ten pieces: seat plus backrest each.

### 04. An orange corner cushion for a childcare room

![Olive green linen-look corner floor cushion with mustard backrest pillows beside a walnut sideboard and photo gallery](https://cushionguide.com/media/corner-floor-cushions/olive-seat-mustard-backrest-floor-cushion-photo-gallery-1600.webp "An olive seat with mustard pillows catches afternoon sun next to a walnut sideboard and a grid of black-framed photographs.")

A childcare teacher ordered an orange corner floor cushion and asked for something easy to wipe clean. The workshop told her the listing fabric is very durable and easy to clean. The last the workshop heard, it had arrived and was being set up in the classroom.

**The takeaway:** Pick a durable, wipeable fabric first, then find the brightest color in that range.

> **Tailor's margin:** If a corner cushion is headed for a daycare, pick the wipe-clean fabric first and the color second.

### 05. A 46 in corner, 5 in thick, for two little girls

![Charcoal gray and white striped corner floor cushion with two backrest pillows against white vertical wall paneling](https://cushionguide.com/media/corner-floor-cushions/charcoal-white-stripe-corner-floor-cushion-paneled-wall-1600.webp "Gray-and-white stripes line up with white tongue-and-groove boards, while a lattice rug adds a second pattern underfoot.")

A parent in the US wanted a corner floor cushion for two little girls' reading nook, with 46 in (117 cm) sides and more foam than the standard 4 in (10 cm). The workshop quoted 5 in (13 cm) and 6 in (15 cm) and sent photos of cream, beige and smoke. She chose smoke at 5 in.

**The takeaway:** For a corner nook, give the side length and ask for 5 to 6 in of foam.

> **Tailor's margin:** Order a kids' corner cushion by side length, like 46 in, and ask for 5 to 6 in of foam.

### 06. A 30 in salmon round for a daughter's nook

![Walnut brown corduroy rainbow arch nesting a sand arch and a cream dome on a jute rug below a wall book ledge](https://cushionguide.com/media/kids-floor-sofas/walnut-sand-cream-corduroy-rainbow-arch-nursery-1600.webp "Three shades from one brown family keep the set calm enough for a nursery.")

A parent in the US wanted a round tufted French-style cushion in salmon for a daughter's reading nook, and asked how big the round one in the listing photo was. It was 24 x 24 in (61 x 61 cm). Knowing that, she settled on 30 in (76 cm).

**The takeaway:** Ask the size of the pictured sample before you judge scale from a photo.

> **Tailor's margin:** The round floor cushion in the listing photo measured 24 in, so the reading nook got a 30 in round.

### 07. Khaki covers that come off, for a toddler's room

![Top-down view of a rust, espresso and cream corduroy nesting arch on a star-dotted rug with a curly-haired toddler](https://cushionguide.com/media/kids-floor-sofas/overhead-rust-espresso-cream-corduroy-arch-1365.webp "Seen from above, the three pieces fit together with only a thin gap between them.")

A parent in the US planned a floor cushion set for a toddler's reading area and needed covers that come off for washing. Tufted cushions have no zipper, so their covers stay put. The workshop offered the untufted, foam-filled version with a zippered cover in the khaki range, requested in the order notes.

**The takeaway:** Where toddlers sit, choose untufted cushions with zippered covers you can machine-wash.

> **Tailor's margin:** Tufted floor cushions have no zipper, so a toddler's reading corner wants the untufted version with a washable cover.

### 08. A blue velvet corner with a 16 in backrest

![Cornflower blue and mustard striped corner floor cushion with backrest pillows against a dark bottle-green wall](https://cushionguide.com/media/corner-floor-cushions/cornflower-mustard-stripe-floor-seat-bottle-green-wall-1600.webp "Sunny blue-and-mustard stripes pop against deep bottle-green paint, with an oak side table and a potted plant for company.")

A parent wrote to the workshop about a child's bedroom reading corner, asking which blue was in the listing photo (velvet color 19) and what the set held: a 4 in (10 cm) floor cushion, a 16 in (41 cm) backrest pillow and two bolsters. Her corner wanted 22 x 34 in (56 x 86 cm), so the workshop told her to pick the 24 x 32 in (61 x 81 cm) option and write her true size in the personalization.

**The takeaway:** Choose the nearest size option and put the exact size in the order note.

> **Tailor's margin:** Order a 22 x 34 in corner cushion through the nearest option and write the true size in the note.

## Which shape fits which corner

Five shapes cover every reading corner in these sketches. The [quarter-circle sizing Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/corner-floor-cushion-quarter-circle-size/) does the arc math, [kids' floor sofa sizes by age](https://cushionguide.com/guides/kids-floor-sofa-size-by-age/) helps with the little ones, and the [foam firmness finder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/foam-firmness-finder/) settles how soft.

| Shape | Fits | Measure | From the corners |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quarter-round, 40 x 40 in (102 x 102 cm) | Two toddlers around age 3 | The two straight sides along the walls | The size the workshop suggests for two toddlers |
| Quarter-round, 46 to 48 in (117 to 122 cm) | A classroom, or two bigger readers | Side length; 48 in is the standard maximum, with a curved edge of about 75.4 in (192 cm) | Two 46 in corners in smoke gray |
| Round, 24 to 30 in (61 to 76 cm) | One child in a small nook | Straight across the middle | A 30 in round in salmon |
| Seats with backrests, wall by wall | Three walls and a whole class | Each wall run; leave heaters clear | 60 in and 47.5 in seats, 24 in (61 cm) deep |
| Matching seat-and-back sets | A daycare room seating five | One size, repeated | Five sets at 28 x 30 x 8 in (71 x 76 x 20 cm) |

## Buyer questions: reading-corner questions

**A common question:** My reading-corner cushion is tufted and can't go in the washer. How do I clean it?

**The workshop's answer:** Clean it where it sits. Wipe the surface gently with a damp cloth, and use a little mild soap and water on marks. The soft fabric range wipes clean most easily. If you want to machine-wash, choose the untufted foam version, which has a zippered removable cover.

**A common question:** Is there a waterproof fabric for a toddler who spills everything?

**The workshop's answer:** The standard indoor fabric isn't waterproof; it's durable and easy to clean, and zippered covers machine-wash at 86°F (30°C) or lower. For real liquid protection, ask for the water-repellent outdoor fabric, a good main pick with a toddler. There are water-resistant, easy-wipe charts too, and any cushion can be made in any of the fabrics.

**A common question:** What size corner floor cushion fits two toddlers, and can it be thicker?

**The workshop's answer:** Corner cushions are sized by their two straight sides: 40 x 40 in (102 x 102 cm) suits two toddlers around 3, and 48 x 48 in (122 x 122 cm) is the common large size. The tufted corner is 4 in (10 cm) thick by default, with 5 or 6 in (13 or 15 cm) made to order; the plush kids' corner sofa is 8 in (20 cm).

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why is the real quote for a classroom corner higher than the listing price?

On floor-cushion listings, the low 'from' price is usually for a fabric sample, not a finished cushion. Send the whole plan, every wall and every piece, and ask for one total before you settle on colors.

### Is the standard cushion fabric fire-retardant for a school?

No. The standard fabric isn't treated to be fire-retardant, and fire-retardant fabrics are available on request. Ask your school what the room requires before you order. The fabrics come from a mill certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (03.T.3239).

### Why does a new corner cushion look flat coming out of the box?

It traveled vacuum-packed. Unpack it right away, lay it flat and keep the children off it for the first 48 hours. Foam needs 48 to 72 hours, sometimes up to a week, to recover, so wait 3 to 4 days before measuring.
