# Brownstone window seats: deep reveals, radiators and parlor light

*A parlor window set in masonry gives you a deep sill, something warm or humming underneath, and light that changes color by the hour. Nine window seats from past orders show how to handle the height, the shape and the color.*

> **The quick answer:** A brownstone window seat cushion is measured inside the masonry reveal and kept 2 to 3 in (5 to 7.5 cm) thick where a window unit or tight clearance limits height, 4 in (10 cm) otherwise. Confirm rectangle or trapezoid by measuring the front and back edges, because photos distort shape. Choose color from a swatch held in your own window light.

![Terracotta rust corduroy window seat cushion with piped box edge, chunky knit pillow, burlap lumbar and trailing pothos](https://cushionguide.com/media/window-seat-cushions/terracotta-corduroy-window-seat-knit-burlap-pillows-1600.webp "A thick rust cord cushion sits on a white window ledge, echoing the terracotta pot and the tan burlap pillow.")

## Three questions a parlor window asks

The thinnest cushion in these nine sketches is 2 in (5 cm), and it was exactly right, because a window unit set the height. A brownstone window seat cushion is ruled by what surrounds it: a deep masonry reveal, a radiator cover or window unit close by, and tall parlor light that runs from cool gray-blue at a north window to low amber at a west one.

So I read these seats for three things before I think about pillows. How thin must the cushion be? What shape is the seat, really? Which color keeps its nerve in low city light? Daylight never lies; your screen sometimes does.

The sketches are window seats the workshop has made: a renter's apartment bench, a daughter's two sills, a designer's client project, a 138 in (351 cm) run of linen. The [window seat cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) hub holds the full range of shapes. For fabric, the sheen of [velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/) and the matte calm of [linen](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-and-cotton-linen/) behave very differently beside tall glass, and [why a swatch never matches the screen](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-color-screen-vs-daylight/) is worth reading before any color decision. Which way does your parlor window face?

## Nine window seats, each read in its own light

### 01. Two sills of different sizes, both kept at 2 in

![Dusty blue linen-look window seat cushion with indigo piping on an oak-topped stair landing bench beside white balusters](https://cushionguide.com/media/window-seat-cushions/dusty-blue-stair-landing-window-seat-cushion-1600.webp "A small dusty blue cushion makes a landing window a place to pause, finished with tone-on-tone indigo piping.")

A parent in the US ordered swatches before buying cushions for her daughter's apartment: two window sills of different sizes, one of them above an AC unit. She chose a light blue with blue piping, then sent the workshop a photo of the rug so it could confirm the pairing. Both cushions stayed at 2 in (5 cm), because the unit limited the height on one sill.

**The takeaway:** Check what sits under or beside each sill before choosing thickness; the tightest window sets the profile.

> **Tailor's margin:** A window seat cushion above an AC unit stays at 2 in (5 cm) to keep the profile low.

### 02. A 14 x 30 in apartment bench that photographed as a trapezoid

![Teal velvet box cushion on a white storage window bench with gray geometric pillows and eucalyptus on the sill](https://cushionguide.com/media/window-seat-cushions/teal-velvet-storage-window-bench-cushion-1536.webp "One bold teal velvet cushion carries this white window bench; gray diamond pillows and white linens keep it from feeling heavy.")

A renter in the US sent a photo of her window bench with a tape measure across it and asked for a 14 x 30 in (36 x 76 cm) seat in emerald green. The camera angle made the seat look like a trapezoid, so the workshop offered to copy the shape from a paper drawing. She confirmed a plain rectangle, seat cushion only, no back or arms.

**The takeaway:** Measure the front edge and the back edge separately; if they match, it is a rectangle, whatever the photo says.

> **Tailor's margin:** A phone photo can turn a rectangular window seat into a trapezoid; two measured edges settle the shape.

### 03. A 138 in linen window seat in one continuous piece

![Thick camel wide-wale corduroy window seat cushion with blue and brown pillows in a dusty blue room with a rattan mirror](https://cushionguide.com/media/window-seat-cushions/camel-corduroy-window-seat-dusty-blue-room-1600.webp "Camel against dusty blue is a warm-cool pairing that makes both colors look softer.")

A buyer in the US needed a window seat cushion 40 x 138 x 3 in (102 x 351 x 7.5 cm) in linen with contrasting velvet piping. Their one worry was that it would arrive in two sections. The workshop confirmed it could be made as one continuous piece and set up the size so they could order it.

**The takeaway:** Ask whether a long cushion will be one piece or split before you order, since very long lengths are sometimes made in two.

> **Tailor's margin:** Velvet piping on a linen window seat catches the light along the edge while the flat weave stays quiet.

### 04. Two reading-nook seats in real tri-color cowhide

![Charcoal black corduroy window seat cushion with piped box edge on a white ledge, cream knit and camel linen pillows](https://cushionguide.com/media/window-seat-cushions/charcoal-black-corduroy-window-seat-city-view-1600.webp "Near-black cord makes every rib catch the window light, while camel and cream pillows keep the corner from turning cold.")

A buyer in the US wanted two foam seat cushions, 17.5 x 19.5 x 3 in (44 x 50 x 7.5 cm), for a reading nook in real tri-color cowhide, not a printed imitation. The workshop agreed, and offered either to source the hide itself or to work with one the buyer supplied.

**The takeaway:** Settle who sources the hide first; the pattern of that one skin decides how the pair will look.

> **Tailor's margin:** If a seat cushion is real cowhide, agree who sources the hide before ordering; natural skins vary piece to piece.

### 05. A designer's 20 x 80 in window seat in pink velvet

![Blush tan bouclé cushion on a walnut window bench with cream and sage pillows, dried hydrangeas and a pink Moroccan rug](https://cushionguide.com/media/window-seat-cushions/blush-tan-boucle-window-bench-paris-rooftops-928.webp "Blush tan bouclé softens a walnut window bench, with dried hydrangeas and a pink rug carrying the color around the room.")

An interior designer in the US asked for a 20 x 80 in (51 x 203 cm) tufted window seat cushion in the pink from a listing photo. Before quoting, the workshop confirmed which numbered color that photo showed. Once her client approved the furniture plan, the 20 x 80 in size was set up for the order.

**The takeaway:** Before you show a client a color, have its fabric code confirmed from the exact photo.

> **Tailor's margin:** Order a pink velvet window seat by its fabric code, not its photo: pinks shift more than most on screen.

### 06. Replacing a 30.5 x 52 in cushion in peachy blush velvet

![Terracotta rust corduroy window seat cushion with piped box edge, chunky knit pillow, burlap lumbar and trailing pothos](https://cushionguide.com/media/window-seat-cushions/terracotta-corduroy-window-seat-knit-burlap-pillows-1600.webp "A thick rust cord cushion sits on a white window ledge, echoing the terracotta pot and the tan burlap pillow.")

A buyer in the US replacing an old window cushion had ordered the 28 in width, then found the seat really needed 30.5 x 52 in (77.5 x 132 cm). The workshop made it 30 x 52 in (76 x 132 cm). She wanted a peachy blush velvet, compared one of the workshop's blushes with her reference photos, and chose another from the chart.

**The takeaway:** Measure the seat itself before reordering; a remembered size can be off by more than 2 in (5 cm).

> **Tailor's margin:** If a blush velvet swatch looks right at noon, check it again under your evening lamps before ordering.

### 07. A small 25 x 17 in window seat in beige velvet

![Ivory corduroy window seat cushion on a white bench with ivory and oatmeal linen pillows, olive tree and garden view](https://cushionguide.com/media/window-seat-cushions/ivory-corduroy-window-seat-olive-tree-garden-1600.webp "An ivory cushion on white joinery relies on rib shadows and a piped edge to stay defined.")

A buyer in the US asked for a 25 x 17 in (64 x 43 cm) window seat cushion in beige velvet or chenille. The workshop set up the exact size, and she picked a numbered beige velvet from the chart. When it arrived she called it magnificent: a perfect fit and a perfect color.

**The takeaway:** Small seats come out best when the exact size and a numbered color are confirmed before production.

> **Tailor's margin:** Small window seat cushions forgive nothing: write the exact size, like 25 x 17 in, in the order note.

### 08. Two window benches, 46 in and 69 in long, in two colors

![Espresso brown corduroy window seat cushion on a white shaker kitchen bench with a linen pillow, books and black pendant](https://cushionguide.com/media/window-seat-cushions/espresso-corduroy-kitchen-window-seat-shaker-1600.webp "Dark corduroy echoes the walnut-toned floor and the black window frame, anchoring a white kitchen.")

A buyer in the US needed tufted velvet cushions for two window benches, 46 x 22 in (117 x 56 cm) and 69 x 21.5 in (175 x 55 cm), each in a different color. Neither size was on the size menu, so the workshop told them to pick the nearest option and write the exact size in the note.

**The takeaway:** If your size is not on the menu, choose the nearest option and write the exact inches in the note; the cushion is cut to your numbers.

> **Tailor's margin:** Two window benches in two colors read as a pair if they share one fabric family and one piping color.

### 09. Olive velvet, and piping that reads gold or yellow

![Mushroom taupe window seat cushion with fine brown piping, chocolate pillow, cream knit throw and brass cup pulls](https://cushionguide.com/media/window-seat-cushions/mushroom-taupe-window-seat-tonal-brown-piping-1536.webp "Tone-on-tone browns, from mushroom seat to chocolate pillow, with a cream throw and brass pulls for light and shine.")

A buyer in the US with warm beige walls and dark wood furniture asked what would sit with her sofa, and the workshop suggested a dark olive velvet. She ordered samples before choosing, and the workshop warned her that the same piping can look gold or yellow depending on the light. Her 154.5 in (392 cm) window bench run was split into two equal sections.

**The takeaway:** Put the piping on the swatch order too, and judge body and welt together in morning and evening light.

> **Tailor's margin:** One piping color can read gold in one light and yellow in another; judge the welt beside the body fabric.

## How thick, under what window

Thickness is where a deep window pushes back hardest, my friends. The standard 2, 3, 4 and 5 in (5, 7.5, 10 and 12.5 cm) options cost the same, so choose on clearance and line. The [window seat cushion thickness](https://cushionguide.com/guides/window-seat-cushion-thickness/) Pattern works through the sums, the [seat height calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/seat-height-calculator/) checks them against your sill, and the [bench cushion builder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/bench-cushion-builder/) lets you see the profile before anyone cuts.

| What limits the seat | Thickness | What it gives you | From the sketches |
|---|---|---|---|
| A window unit or other obstruction setting the height | 2 in (5 cm) | The lowest profile; firm 32-density foam keeps it supportive | Two light blue sill cushions of different sizes, both at 2 in |
| A tight 15 in (38 cm) gap between seat and windowsill | 3 in (7.5 cm) | A trimmer, neater line; a best seller for benches | A 40 x 138 in (102 x 351 cm) linen run in one piece |
| An open reveal and an everyday reading seat | 4 in (10 cm) | The standard, and the tailored built-in look | The thickness most buyers keep |

> Close-up photos of a velvet swatch read darker and coarser than the fabric does in daylight, so judge a window seat color at the window itself.

## Window seat questions

**A common question:** How thick do most people make a window seat cushion, and what would you pick?

**The workshop's answer:** Most buyers choose 3 or 4 in. 4 in (10 cm) is the standard and the workshop's pick for everyday seating and a tailored built-in window-seat look. 3 in (7.5 cm) gives a trimmer profile, is a best seller for benches and suits tight spots such as a 15 in (38 cm) gap below a windowsill. The foam is firm, about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), so even 2 to 2.5 in stays supportive. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 in options cost the same, so choose on looks and fit.

**A common question:** Why does the same fabric look warmer in one of your photos and cooler in another?

**The workshop's answer:** Lighting, camera settings, angle and screens all change how a color reads. Warm light calms some greens while white light pushes them toward yellow-lime, and the same piping has looked gold in one photo and not in another. The color chart image is the most accurate reference, the workshop can take a fresh close-up of the physical fabric, and buyers' room photos show how a color lives in a home. No single photo can be guaranteed, so order swatches if the exact tone matters.

**A common question:** Before I order, can I see my body fabric and piping side by side?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The workshop photographs the chosen swatches side by side, in as many combinations as you need, with extra shots in different lighting on request. It doesn't make AI mockups, because they don't show real tones, and not every combination exists as a finished cushion. Close-ups come out a little darker and make the weave look coarser than in daylight, so physical samples are the safest way to judge a combination for your room.

**A common question:** Can you match a new cushion to a couch or chairs I bought somewhere else?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop can get close but can't guarantee an exact match. Send daylight photos of the piece and it suggests the nearest fabrics from its chart, such as a forgiving cream linen beside dining chairs, but the final choice stays with you, since screens differ. For a real check, order swatches, up to 5 codes per sample order, and hold them against the piece at home.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How do I measure a window seat set into a deep masonry reveal?

Measure the seat itself, wall to wall, along the front edge and again at the back against the window, then take the depth straight at 90 degrees. If front and back differ, the seat is a trapezoid and needs a drawing with every edge. Width is the short side, length the long side.

### Will a very long window seat cushion be delivered in two pieces?

Ask before you order. A 40 x 138 in (102 x 351 cm) linen cushion was made as one continuous piece on request, while a 154.5 in (392 cm) bench run was split into two equal sections. Long lengths are sometimes made in two, so say which you want.

### Why is my new window seat cushion shorter than the size I ordered?

It may still be recovering. Vacuum-packed foam needs about a week to fully recover before it is measured. One 19.5 x 105.25 x 2 in (50 x 267 x 5 cm) velvet window seat measured about 103 in (262 cm) on arrival, so measure after a week, not on day one.

### Can two window seats of different sizes be ordered as a set?

Yes. Choose the nearest listed size for each and write the exact inches in the order note; each cushion is cut to your numbers. One parent ordered two sills of different sizes in the same light blue with blue piping, both at 2 in (5 cm).
