# Brown bench cushions are back: chocolate, saddle and mushroom

*Brown came back into the workroom the way good things do, slowly and then all at once. Here it is in velvet and corduroy, told through real benches, bolsters and one sofa that arrived the wrong color.*

> **The quick answer:** For a brown bench cushion, choose the cloth first: velvet gives mushroom taupe and chocolate a soft sheen, corduroy gives a deep ribbed brown, and linen with brown velvet piping gives a lighter saddle look. Pile fabrics shift shade with light and angle, so ask for real-life photos or order swatches, and write the color name and code on the order.

## Saddle, chocolate and the gray-brown in between

A buyer once asked the workshop for brown 'like saddle, not cognac,' and in more than fifty years at the bench I have not heard a better color brief.

Brown requests at the workshop have risen four years running, and Benjamin Moore named Silhouette (AF-655), a burnt umber inspired by classic suiting, its 2026 color. So chocolate, saddle, camel and the soft gray-brown the chart calls mushroom taupe are back on the cutting table.

A brown bench cushion is harder to choose than it looks. Velvet and corduroy both carry a pile, and pile turns one brown into two depending on where you stand. Velvet remembers.

Start with the [velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/) and [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/) pages, then [bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) for shapes. Tell me, my friend: is your brown closer to saddle or to chocolate?

## Eight brown projects off the cutting table

### 01. A 101.5 in mushroom velvet bench with its bolster

![Mushroom taupe box cushion with fine white stripes on a gray paneled storage bench against pale yellow bedroom walls](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/mushroom-stripe-cushion-gray-storage-bench-yellow-bedroom-1600.webp "A long gray bench under the window becomes a seat and blanket store beside the bed.")

A buyer in the US wanted a 101.5 x 19 x 3 in (258 x 48 x 7.5 cm) bench cushion plus a bolster, both in Mushroom Taupe velvet with same-color piping on firm foam. The two were quoted together as one order.

**The takeaway:** On a long bench, a matching bolster turns a seat into a place to lounge; order the pair at the same time.

> **Tailor's margin:** Order a long bench cushion and its bolster together. Velvet ordered separately can come out a different shade.

### 02. Two brown corduroy benches, ties 2 in from the ends

![Camel corduroy box cushion on a pine hallway bench below coat hooks, with a pine mirror, seagrass basket and trainers](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/camel-corduroy-pine-hall-bench-sage-entryway-1600.webp "A camel corduroy pad turns a simple pine hall bench into a comfortable place to pull boots on.")

A buyer in the US ordered two 62 x 14 in (157 x 36 cm) brown corduroy bench cushions, each with four ties 2 in (5 cm) from the ends. The workshop placed the ties from a photo and sketch of the benches, sent a photo of the sewn covers for approval, and put the high-density foam in the next day.

**The takeaway:** Ask to see the sewn covers before the foam goes in; that is the moment to check ties and color.

> **Tailor's margin:** Place bench ties from a photo of the frame. One corduroy pair had four ties, 2 in from each end.

### 03. Dark brown window seat with three round bolsters

![Chocolate brown box cushion on a white cubby storage bench with bouclé pillows, tartan throw and wicker basket](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/chocolate-brown-entryway-cubby-bench-cushion-1536.webp "A deep chocolate seat on a white cubby bench, softened by cream bouclé and knit pillows and a beige tartan throw against shiplap.")

A buyer in the US wanted a dark brown window seat set: two 18 x 37 in (46 x 94 cm) rectangles and three 32 in (81 cm) cylinder bolsters. Five custom pieces made no sense in a standard cart, so the set was priced as one offer.

**The takeaway:** Price a mixed set of cushions and bolsters as one custom quote, not piece by piece.

> **Tailor's margin:** Two 18 x 37 in cushions and three 32 in bolsters make five pieces; price them as one custom set.

### 04. Brown floor sofas and their square ottomans

![Taupe bouclé cushion on a light oak bench in an oak-paneled alcove with graphic, abstract and rust bouclé pillows](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/taupe-boucle-reading-bench-oak-paneled-alcove-1600.webp "Taupe bouclé matched to oak paneling, with one rust pillow as the only warm accent.")

Two floor sofas came in brown: one in brown velvet with a matching 39 x 39 in (99 x 99 cm) ottoman, one in brown and dark-brown corduroy. The corduroy sofa comes in two browns, and the darker reads quite dark in person.

**The takeaway:** Before choosing between two browns, ask for real-life customer photos of both; styled photos flatter.

> **Tailor's margin:** The corduroy floor sofa comes in two browns, and the darker reads quite dark in person. Ask for real photos.

### 05. Mustard ordered, brick delivered

![Brown and white cowhide-print box cushion on a white bench beside cube shelves, a wooden lamp and pinned botanical art](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/brown-cowhide-bench-cushion-book-corner-table-lamp-1600.webp "A chocolate cowhide print makes a simple white bench feel like a reading seat, with books and a lamp within arm's reach.")

One buyer wrote in after a floor sofa ordered in mustard arrived in brick, and it had to go back. In person brick is a rust orange, but screens and home light can blur warm colors.

**The takeaway:** Write the color name and the code on the order, and ask for the photo taken before shipping.

> **Tailor's margin:** Brick corduroy reads as rust orange in person, not brown. Name the color and code on every order.

### 06. Brown velvet covers for a sofa's old inserts

![Oatmeal beige linen-look bolster with self piping lying against the arm of a navy blue velvet sofa, oak floor below](https://cushionguide.com/media/bolster-pillows/oatmeal-bolster-navy-velvet-sofa-arm-1600.webp "A light, dry-textured bolster on deep navy velvet, the reverse of the usual dark-cushion-on-pale-sofa formula.")

One buyer kept a sofa's inserts and ordered brown velvet covers: three seats at 23 x 24 x 4.5 in (58 x 61 x 11.5 cm) and three backs at 23 x 20 x 3.5 in (58 x 51 x 9 cm), each measured on its own.

**The takeaway:** For covers only, measure every insert, seat and back separately, thickness included.

> **Tailor's margin:** Measure each old insert before ordering new velvet covers. One sofa's seats and backs differed by 4 in.

### 07. Saddle, not cognac

![Fine taupe and cream pinstripe bench cushion on a floating oak platform in a limewashed alcove with a stoneware vase](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/fine-taupe-pinstripe-cushion-japandi-oak-platform-1600.webp "A very fine taupe pinstripe reads almost like plain linen here, adding just enough line to a limewashed alcove.")

One buyer asked for brown 'like saddle, not cognac'; another wanted beige with dark-brown piping. The first is a brief worth copying. For the second, a tan linen cushion with brown velvet piping is a pairing the workshop has named from a buyer's photo.

**The takeaway:** Describe your brown twice: the brown you want, and the brown it must not be.

> **Tailor's margin:** Saddle, not cognac, is a fine brown brief: name the brown you want and the brown it must not be.

### 08. Olive brown that read as plain brown

![Taupe bouclé box cushion on an oak trestle bench beneath a tall canal-house window, with a basket of tulips on the seat](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/taupe-boucle-bench-cushion-canal-house-window-1600.webp "Taupe bouclé on pale oak, close enough in tone that the cushion looks like a soft extension of the bench.")

A buyer in the US ordered three seats and three backrests in olive brown velvet. Delivered, the color read as plain brown in their room. The code was right; the light was doing the talking, and the workshop offered physical samples for the reorder.

**The takeaway:** For subtle browns like olive brown or mushroom, order physical swatches and judge them in your own daylight.

> **Tailor's margin:** Olive brown velvet can read as plain brown in a dim room. Check a swatch by a window first.

## Five browns, and what each one does in a room

Browns from past orders, side by side. Try them against your room in the [pillow cover studio](https://cushionguide.com/studio/pillow-cover-studio/), then send for [swatches](https://cushionguide.com/guides/fabric-swatches-before-ordering/).

| Brown | Cloth it has been made in | In person | Before you order |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mushroom taupe | Velvet, same-color piping | A soft gray-brown | Ask for real-life photos; sheen shifts it |
| Dark brown, chocolate | Corduroy or velvet | Quite dark in corduroy | Look from two angles; the nap changes it |
| Saddle, tan | Linen with brown velvet piping | Warm and light | Name the brown it must not be |
| Olive brown | Velvet | Can read as plain brown | Order a physical swatch first |
| Brick | Corduroy | Rust orange, not brown | Write the color name and code |

> If two brown corduroy cushions look mismatched, set them side by side in the same light, from the same angle. The nap alone can turn one shade deeper.

## Brown questions

**A common question:** If I send a photo of my room, can you tell me which brown fabric will match?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send a photo of the color, furniture or room; the workshop names the closest chart codes, checks stock in your fabric and sends the options side by side. For warm beige walls and dark wood it once suggested dark olive velvet. Screens vary, so order swatches before a large piece.

**A common question:** I bought brown cushions from you a while back. Will a new one match them?

**The workshop's answer:** Close, but not always identical. Older fabrics may have been discontinued, so the workshop suggests the nearest tone and sends close-ups to compare. Even the same corduroy looks deeper from one angle and yellower from another.

**A common question:** Your browns look different in every photo. Can I see what they really look like?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The workshop sends real-life customer photos of any color on request. In person the brown corduroy is quite dark, the beige is light, and brick is a rust orange rather than a brown. Screen settings and home lighting both change what you see.

## More about brown cloth and cushions

### Why does a brown velvet cushion look like two different colors?

Velvet has a pile, and the pile catches light differently depending on which way it lies. From one side it reads deeper, from another lighter. Compare cushions in the same light and from the same angle before calling it a mismatch.

### How big should a bolster be on a thin brown bench pad?

Give the diameter explicitly. For 2 in (5 cm) bench pads, one designer in the US chose slim 4 in (10 cm) bolsters in Mushroom Taupe velvet, which suit a thin pad better than standard sizes. See the [bolster size pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/bolster-pillow-size-diameter/).

### How soon should I open a vacuum-packed velvet cushion?

Promptly. Velvet left compressed can crease, and vacuum packing can make a cushion measure short for a while. Open it, let it recover, then measure it against the order before installing. See [the first 72 hours](https://cushionguide.com/guides/vacuum-packed-cushion-first-72-hours/).
