# Beach house window seats that shrug off salt, sun and sand

*The seat by the window in a beach house works harder than any in town. Wet swimsuits, sandy feet, sun off the water, then a winter shut up with the damp. Seven seats from past orders, and how each was built for it.*

> **The quick answer:** A beach house window seat cushion should have a zip-off cover that washes at 86°F (30°C) and a fabric chosen for the worst of the house: outdoor fabric where wet swimsuits, humid air or hard sun reach it, velvet or soft fabric elsewhere. Split long seats and lid benches into pieces, and store cushions clean and fully dry for winter.

## The seat that faces the water

The best seat in a beach house is the one by the window. It also takes the worst of the house.

A **beach house window seat cushion** meets things a town cushion never does: a damp swimsuit at four in the afternoon, a child with sand to the knees, salt air through an open sash, then months with the house shut and the heat down.

Coastal style fills the catalogs with shells and anchors. The cushions that last are plainer: a zip-off cover, a fabric that dries, a seat cut to the wood. The seven below are past orders, measurements and all.

Regional notes sit on the [Florida Gulf Coast](https://cushionguide.com/places/florida-gulf-coast-cushions/), [New England](https://cushionguide.com/places/new-england-cushions/) and [Great Lakes cottage](https://cushionguide.com/places/great-lakes-cottage-cushions/) pages. Which does your seat see more of, friend: sand or sun?

## Seven coastal seats

### 01. Outdoor cloth on an indoor daybed

![Ivory box cushion on a white shiplap window seat with a striped pillow and brass lantern overlooking sand dunes](https://cushionguide.com/media/window-seat-cushions/ivory-window-seat-cushion-shiplap-beach-house-nook-928.webp "An ivory outdoor-grade cushion on a shiplap window seat facing the dunes: soft enough for reading, tough enough for sandy feet.")

A buyer in the US ordered samples, then asked which of the workshop's fabrics could cover daybed mattresses. All of them, the workshop said, except velvet, which stays indoors only. She chose two outdoor fabrics for the mattress covers and bolsters, piped in a soft indoor fabric, and added 3 in (7.5 cm) bench cushions in velvet and 4 in (10 cm) ones in outdoor cloth.

**The takeaway:** For the seat nearest the beach door, consider outdoor fabric indoors, where spills and damp are likely.

> **Tailor's margin:** The seat by the beach door can wear outdoor fabric indoors. Pipe it in a softer indoor cloth if you like the feel.

### 02. A long striped bench cut in two for storage

![Navy, teal and white striped outdoor cushion on a teak dock bench with a rope coil and brass lantern by sailboats](https://cushionguide.com/media/outdoor-cushions/navy-teal-striped-cushion-marina-dock-bench-928.webp "A striped outdoor cushion made for salt air, set on a teak dock bench a few steps from the moorings.")

One buyer wrote in for an outdoor bench cushion of 20.5 x 88 in (52 x 223 cm) in a blue outdoor stripe, 4 in (10 cm) thick, and asked for it in two pieces so it would be easier to carry in and store. Each half came to 20.5 x 44 in (52 x 111.5 cm). They wanted piping close to the lighter blue in the stripe, and the workshop matched it with a solid outdoor color.

**The takeaway:** Split a long outdoor seat so one person can carry each piece in before a storm, and name the piping by its code.

> **Tailor's margin:** Cut a long coastal bench in two. Each half goes indoors under one arm when the forecast turns.

### 03. Ticking chosen from finished photos

![Pale blue ticking-stripe seat and back cushions with a front drop on a wooden garden swing among roses](https://cushionguide.com/media/porch-swing-cushions/blue-ticking-stripe-garden-porch-swing-cushions-1600.webp "A soft blue ticking stripe covers the seat and two back cushions of a timber garden swing, with the seat fabric dropping over the front rail.")

A family in the US wanted black ticking with a brown velvet trim for a room with five window seats. Before choosing, they asked for photos of finished cushions in two tickings, one with wider stripes, then ordered samples of both, two velvets and two linens. The final quote covered five linen cushions of 24.5 x 40 in (62 x 102 cm) and two shaped pieces in ticking with velvet piping.

**The takeaway:** Judge a ticking by a finished cushion, not a chart square. Stripe width changes the whole seat.

> **Tailor's margin:** Ask for a photo of a finished cushion in your ticking. A chart square can't show how wide the stripes read across a seat.

### 04. Mildew from a cold winter window

![Ivory corner window seat cushion with angled front on an oak-edged kitchen bench, tabby cat asleep, wildflowers on sill](https://cushionguide.com/media/window-seat-cushions/ivory-corner-window-seat-cushion-cottage-kitchen-1600.webp "An ivory cushion shaped to a kitchen corner makes a sunny perch between cabinets. The angled front keeps the walkway open.")

A buyer got in touch because the last cushion on their window seat had grown mildew against a single-pane window that ran with condensation all winter. The workshop recommended velvet, or better still its soft fabric, as the easiest to wipe, and said plainly that neither keeps water out. Constant damp can mildew any fabric. The [mildew Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/window-seat-cushion-mildew-condensation/) has the routine.

**The takeaway:** No indoor cloth beats a wet sill. Wipe the glass, lift and air the cushion, and pick a fabric that wipes clean.

> **Tailor's margin:** A cushion pressed to cold, sweating glass all winter will mildew in any fabric. Lift it, air it, wipe the sill.

### 05. Lids that lift, and one run 1.5 in off

Storage benches with lift-up lids came to the workshop from a buyer in the US with hot summers and snowy winters. She wanted a cushion for each lid, 3 in (7.6 cm) thick, including two runs of 45.5 in (116 cm), plus backs. One run was about 1.5 in (4 cm) deeper at one end, so every piece got its own drawing. The workshop was straight with her: no quick-dry foam, no mesh bottom. Its water-repellent, UV-resistant cloth suits a covered porch, with winter storage.

**The takeaway:** One cushion per lid, and a drawing for each piece when depths disagree. The [storage bench Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/storage-bench-cushion-hinged-lid/) covers hinges.

> **Tailor's margin:** On a bench with lids, one cushion per lid. If one end runs 1.5 in deeper, draw that piece by itself.

### 06. Four long ties against the sea wind

A buyer wrote in for two cushions of 118 x 16 in (300 x 40 cm) for benches at a beach property. The standard is 4 in (10 cm) thick; they wanted 6 in (15 cm), plus four long ties on each cushion so the wind couldn't lift them off. The workshop confirmed ties on the sides and offered a new quote for the thicker foam.

**The takeaway:** On an open, windy deck, ask for long ties sewn into the sides, and say where each one goes.

> **Tailor's margin:** Sea wind lifts a light cushion like a sail. Ask for long ties, four per cushion, sewn into the side seams.

### 07. Chenille, a humid coast and a change of plan

A buyer messaged the workshop for a 20 x 73 in (51 x 185 cm) window seat with two cylinder armrests. The workshop first read the armrests as 20 in across; they meant 7 in across and 20 in long (18 x 51 cm), made in the seat's linen. They came back for outdoor chair cushions with rounded corners, and in their humid climate the workshop steered them from chenille to outdoor fabric that resists mildew.

**The takeaway:** Write a bolster's diameter and length in words, and keep plush indoor cloth off a humid porch.

> **Tailor's margin:** Write bolsters as 7 in across, 20 in long. Two bare numbers will be read the wrong way round sooner or later.

## Salt, sun and a house shut for winter

Salt spray is heaviest near the breaking waves and drops off fast over the first few hundred to few thousand feet inland, though corrosion has been measured five to 10 miles back. No fabric is immune. Unzip the covers after a salty week, wash them at 86°F (30°C) on gentle and air dry them. If the seat faces the surf, ask the workshop about the zipper.

Sun off the water fades cloth, and in the South it barely rests: Miami's noon UV index still averages about 4.5 to 5 in December and January. Choose a fabric that holds its color, or outdoor cloth for full sun, and flip the cushion each season; the [fading Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/window-seat-cushion-fading-sun/) has the ratings.

Then the long close-up. Store cushions clean and fully dry, never sealed damp in plastic. The EPA says to dry wet things within 24 to 48 hours and keep indoor humidity below 60 percent. Bring them in before the first frost and they'll forgive you everything.

## Which fabric for which coastal seat

Start with what reaches the cushion. [Outdoor fabric](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/) covers the wet rows and [striped cotton and ticking](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/striped-cotton-and-ticking/) the dry ones; the [covered porch Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/indoor-cushions-covered-porch/) draws the line.

| The seat | What it gets | What we'd choose |
|---|---|---|
| Window seat by the beach door | Wet swimsuits, sand, spills | Outdoor fabric used indoors, with a zip-off cover |
| Sunny seat facing the water | Hours of sun through glass | A fabric that holds its color, or outdoor cloth; flip it each season |
| Seat against cold single-pane glass | Winter condensation | Velvet or soft fabric, wiped often; lift and air the cushion |
| Bunk-room bench or dry reading nook | Kids, books, the odd wet towel | Soft fabric or velvet; cotton ticking if you accept faster wear |
| Screened porch or dock bench | Humid air, pollen, salt, rain | Outdoor fabric only, with ties in the wind; stored for winter |

## Stripes that run the right way

Blue-and-white stripes are the uniform of a beach house, and they come with a rule. The fabric roll is about 55 in (140 cm) wide, so on a long cushion the stripes run front to back by default; running them the length of anything over about 54 in (138 cm) takes a seam. You can ask for either direction before production; the [stripe direction Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/striped-cushion-stripe-direction/) shows both.

One family finishing an attic bunk room sent the workshop their wallpaper and asked for piping to match. The workshop picked a muted blue-gray body with a warm ivory welt, and later, for bolder wallpaper, green with light blue piping. Piping is the easiest place to pick up a second color.

> — Callum

> **Tailor's margin:** Before you close the house for winter, wash the covers, dry the foam right through, and store both where air moves, never sealed in plastic.

## Coastal questions

**A common question:** Which way will the stripes run on my long window seat, and can I change it?

**The workshop's answer:** By default they run front to back across the depth. Most rolls are about 55 in (140 cm) wide, so stripes running the length of a long cushion would need two pieces and a seam; front to back gives a seamless, durable top. You can ask for another direction on the top and sides before production, ideally with a reference photo, and the team checks it can be done. Stripes too narrow for piping get a matching solid welt.

**A common question:** What are your striped fabrics made of? Is there a linen stripe?

**The workshop's answer:** The stripes are 100% cotton, apart from one black-and-white stripe at 98% cotton and 2% polyester. They wash well and look lovely but aren't quite as hard-wearing as the linen or velvet ranges. There is no linen version of the stripes, and an extra linen chart of creams and beige-whites is available on request.

**A common question:** Which fabric is easiest to clean with kids, a dog and sandy feet?

**The workshop's answer:** First, indoors or outdoors? Indoors, soft fabric is the top easy-care pick: durable, smooth, good in high-traffic rooms, and it doesn't collect dust or lint. Velvet is also easy to clean and pet-friendly, and there are water-resistant, wipe-clean charts. Outdoors, use the water-repellent outdoor range. Covers wash at 86°F (30°C).

**A common question:** Our screened porch faces the ocean. Can indoor cushions live out there?

**The workshop's answer:** Only under a closed roof where rain and direct sun never reach; there, linen, velvet and the soft fabrics are fine. A screened porch that lets in pollen, dust and humid air, or any open-air spot, should get outdoor fabric, and samples can go out first. Any piece, from seat to bolster, can be made in it.

## More about beach house window seats

### Will a beach house window seat cushion fade?

Sun through glass fades any fabric gently over the seasons, and near the water the light is strong. Pick a fabric rated 6 or higher on the blue wool lightfastness scale, or a sun-resistant outdoor fabric for full sun. Flip and rotate the cushion each season and draw a sheer at midday.

### Is there a stain-proof coating on the fabrics?

No. The fabrics are described as performance fabrics, pre-shrunk and machine washable, but no branded stain-proof finish or coating is applied. The cotton stripes are the exception to the performance label and wear faster. For families, soft fabric and velvet are the easiest to wash and wipe.

### Do you have blue striped fabric for a coastal window seat?

Yes. The cotton charts include a navy ticking, and the outdoor range has blue stripes. Extra patterned charts are sent on request, with no price difference among the shop's own fabrics. A print you found elsewhere can sometimes be sourced from a photo, at a higher price.
