# Can I wash the non-slip bottom of my floor sofa?

*Short version: the covers go in the washer, the rubbery bottom does not. The rubber bits people spot in reviews come from mixing the two.*

Also asked as: Is the rubber bottom washable?; A review said rubber particles come off

> **The quick answer:** No, don't machine wash the non-slip bottom of a floor sofa; wipe it clean instead. Both large seat cushions carry a rubber-backed, non-slip fabric underneath that stops the sofa sliding. Rubber particles come off when that fabric goes through the wash with the cover, so take the non-slip part out first, wash the covers, and keep the non-slip piece out of the dryer.

## Key facts

- Both large seat cushions have a non-slip fabric on the bottom.
- The non-slip base is wipe-clean, not machine-washable.
- Non-slip pieces must never go in the tumble dryer.
- Rubber particles shed when the non-slip part is washed with the cover.
- Remove the non-slip part before washing the covers.
- There is no velcro; the non-slip fabric keeps the pieces from drifting.
- Each large seat cushion is about 79 x 39 x 6.5 in (200 x 100 x 17 cm), with the grip fabric across its underside.
- Once the non-slip part is out, the colored covers machine wash at 86°F (30°C) or below on a gentle cycle.
- The metal support bars, steel tube about 5/8 in (16 mm) thick, work with the grip fabric to keep the layout in place.

## What you did, and what the wash did back

| What you did | What happens |
|---|---|
| Washed the cover with the non-slip part still in | Rubber particles come off |
| Took the non-slip part out, then washed the covers | The covers wash cleanly |
| Wiped the non-slip bottom with a damp cloth | The right way to clean it |
| Put the non-slip piece in the tumble dryer | Buyers have seen pads shrink; never do it |

## The review that mentioned rubber crumbs

A buyer wrote in before ordering. A review had mentioned rubber bits coming off the bottom of the sofa. Had that been fixed?

The answer was not a fix but a finding. The shedding happened because the non-slip fabric had gone through the washing machine together with the cover. Take the non-slip part out before washing, and the covers come out clean.

## Wash-day checklist for a floor sofa

- ✓ Take the non-slip part out of the seat covers first.
- ✓ Wash the covers on their own.
- ✓ Wipe the non-slip bottom with a damp cloth.
- ✓ Keep the non-slip piece out of the tumble dryer, full stop.
- ✓ Put the non-slip part back before the cushions return to the floor.

## Why the bottom grips, and why there is no velcro

Right, then. The non-slip layer sits under both large seat cushions, and its job is to stop the sofa creeping across the floor. There is no velcro holding the pieces together; the grippy fabric keeps them from drifting apart. It grips by friction, not glue, so it leaves no residue behind.

I once tossed a rubber-backed bath mat in with the towels and spent an afternoon picking crumbs out of terrycloth. Same lesson, dear. The [non-slip Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/stop-bench-cushion-sliding-ties-nonslip/) covers grip on benches, and [washing cushion covers](https://cushionguide.com/guides/how-to-wash-cushion-covers/) covers the rest of wash day.

> **Tailor's margin:** Take the non-slip part out before floor sofa covers go in the washer; washed together, the rubber backing sheds.

> A floor sofa's non-slip bottom is wipe-clean only: no washing machine, no tumble dryer, just a damp cloth.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** A review mentioned rubber bits coming off. Does the non-slip bottom shed?

**The workshop's answer:** Only when it's washed with the cover. The shedding happened because the non-slip fabric went through the machine together with the cover. Take the non-slip part out first and the covers wash cleanly.

**A common question:** What is the rubber underside, can I wash it, and is there velcro holding the sofa together?

**The workshop's answer:** It's a non-slip layer under both large seat cushions that stops the sofa sliding. It can't be machine washed but wipes clean. There's no velcro; the non-slip fabric keeps the pieces from drifting.

**A common question:** My floor sofa's non-slip pad shrank. Can I buy just that piece?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Replacement non-slip pieces are sold separately at cost; send your sofa color and a photo so the model can be confirmed. Photograph pieces that arrive damaged or flaking and send the photos to the workshop. Never tumble dry them.

**A common question:** What keeps the floor sofa pieces from sliding apart?

**The workshop's answer:** No velcro. Each seat cushion has a white non-slip fabric underneath, and the metal bars and heavy cushions keep the pieces from drifting apart, so no connectors are needed.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Do bench cushion covers follow the same wash rule?

No. Bench cushion covers use a newer, washable non-slip fabric. The wipe-clean-only rule belongs to the rubber-backed base under the large floor sofa seat cushions.

### Why can't the non-slip piece go in the dryer?

Buyers who tumble dried their non-slip pads found them shrunk or torn, and a shrunk pad no longer covers the cushion base. Wipe it clean and keep it well away from the dryer.

### How do I clean a spill on the non-slip bottom?

Wipe it. The rubber-backed base is wipe-clean only, so a damp cloth handles most spills; it should never go through the washing machine or the tumble dryer.
