# Can you add velcro instead of ties to keep my cushion in place?

*A sliding bench cushion is a small daily insult. Here is what the workshop actually sews on, and what it politely declines.*

Also asked as: Velcro instead of ties?; Can you add velcro so it sticks to the bench?

> **The quick answer:** Velcro is possible only by agreement: the workshop's standard answer to a sliding cushion is ties or a non-slip bottom, and it usually suggests one of those first. Two-sided velcro strips have been added on request at extra cost, one side sewn under the cushion and one side sent for the bench. Velcro tabs and snap fasteners aren't made.

## Key facts

- Ties and a non-slip base are the standard ways to stop a cushion moving.
- Velcro tabs are not offered, and snap fasteners are not made.
- Two-sided velcro has been added on request: one side sewn under the cushion, the other sent to fix to the bench.
- Velcro is an extra-cost option, so some buyers fit their own.
- Velcro requests go in the personalization box with your fabric code and piping choice; then wait for confirmation.
- For banquettes the workshop may ask for a photo of the bench.
- Ties can be sewn onto any custom cushion, from a 2 in chair pad to a standard 4 in bench cushion.
- Zippered covers wash at up to 86°F (30°C), but a non-slip bottom panel must not go in the washer or dryer, where it shrinks.
- The newer washable non-slip material adds to production time; ask for the current figure before you order.

## Ties, non-slip, velcro, snaps: the scorecard

| Fastening | Offered? | How it works | Best on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ties | Yes, standard | Sewn into the seam where you ask: corners, back edge or one side | Benches with a rail or open frame; back cushions against a wooden backboard |
| Non-slip base | Yes, standard | The cushion bottom is made from non-slip fabric | Banquettes and built-ins with nothing to tie around |
| Two-sided velcro strip | Only by agreement, extra cost | One side sewn under the cushion, one side sent for the bench | An entry bench where you want a fixed hold |
| Velcro tabs | No | Not made | Ask for corner ties instead |
| Snap fasteners | No | Not produced | Ask for ties on the back instead |

## Why the workshop reaches for ties first

Right, then. Velcro sounds tidy until you have to fix one half to a painted bench. The workshop's standard answers are [ties](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#ties), sewn right into the seam, and a [non-slip base](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#non-slip-base) for benches with nothing to tie around. Both arrive on the cushion and ask nothing of your woodwork. I've scraped enough old hook-and-loop off window seats to have opinions, dear.

When velcro is agreed, it comes in two halves: one sewn under the cushion, the matching strip sent to you for the bench. It costs extra, which is why some buyers buy their own strip and fit it themselves. The [Pattern on stopping a bench cushion sliding](https://cushionguide.com/guides/stop-bench-cushion-sliding-ties-nonslip/) covers all three.

## How to ask for velcro properly

1. **Write it in the personalization box**: Velcro and where it goes, plus your fabric code and piping choice, all in one note. The [personalization Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/custom-cushion-personalization-note/) shows the format.
2. **Send a photo of the bench**: For banquettes the workshop may ask for one, and may suggest ties or a non-slip base instead.
3. **Wait for the yes**: Velcro is by agreement. Don't count on it until the shop confirms.

> **Tailor's margin:** Snaps under a bench cushion aren't made; ask for two ties on the back edge instead and knot them around the bench rail.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Can you add velcro so the cushion stops sliding on my entryway bench?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, velcro straps can be added to keep it in place. Write the request in the personalization box along with your fabric code and whether you want piping.

**A common question:** How does the velcro attach to the bench itself?

**The workshop's answer:** It's two-sided: one side is sewn under the cushion and the other side is sent to you to fix to the bench. The strips cost extra, so some buyers fit their own.

**A common question:** Could you put a velcro tab on the back cushion so it grips a wooden backboard?

**The workshop's answer:** Velcro tabs aren't something the shop makes. It offers fabric ties on the corners of the back cushion instead, tied around the wooden back piece to hold it in place.

**A common question:** I want heavy-duty velcro to fix banquette cushions down. Is that possible?

**The workshop's answer:** For a banquette the shop suggested ties, or a cushion base made from non-slip fabric so it won't slide, and asked for a photo of the bench first.

**A common question:** Can snaps go under the cushions to fix them to the frame?

**The workshop's answer:** No. Snap fasteners on the underside aren't produced, but ties on the back can be added, and a non-slip base is the other way to stop cushions moving.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Where do the ties go if my bench has a rail at the back?

Two ties on the back edge, knotted around the rail. With no rail, four corner ties can be knotted together under the seat instead. Mark exact positions on a sketch or photo, and check the pre-shipment photo.

### Do outdoor cushions come with velcro?

Not as standard. Replies about outdoor cushions have said velcro isn't offered at the moment, and the workshop steers buyers to ties or a non-slip bottom instead. Ask before ordering if velcro is a must.

### Can ties go anywhere I want on the cushion?

Yes. Ties can be sewn onto any custom cushion wherever you ask: corners, the back edge or one side. Write how many and where in the personalization box, and they are sewn into the seam.
