# Can you make U-shaped dinette or campervan seat cushions?

*A U-shaped dinette is three seats and a back cushion pretending to be one object. Draw each piece on its own and the whole thing becomes simple arithmetic.*

Also asked as: Seating cushions for my campervan?; It's a U-shaped design.

> **The quick answer:** Yes, U-shaped dinette and campervan seat cushions are made regularly, each piece cut to its own measured size. Send a drawing with every run of the U, the depth and the thickness you want, plus a photo of the space. One set used a 65 x 17.5 in long seat and two 17.5 x 24.5 in side seats, all 8 in thick.

## Key facts

- U-shaped vehicle and dinette seating is made regularly.
- Send each run of the U, the depth, the thickness and a photo of the space.
- Each piece of a U is sized separately, including the side seats.
- Dinette seats can be 8 in (20 cm) thick or more.
- Replacement covers for camper or trailer cushions are made from a template or drawing of each cushion.
- The workshop reviews the drawing before quoting.

## One real U-shaped dinette, piece by piece

| Piece | Size | Thickness | Qty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long seat | 65 x 17.5 in (165 x 44.5 cm) | 8 in (20 cm) | 1 |
| Side seat | 17.5 x 24.5 in (44.5 x 62 cm) | 8 in (20 cm) | 2 |
| Back cushion | 65 in (165 cm) long | 4 in (10 cm) deep | 1 |

## Why every leg of the U gets its own numbers

A U-shaped seat looks like one object. It is not, partner. It is a long seat, two side seats and, in this set, a back cushion, each with its own width, depth and thickness.

In the velvet set above, all three seats share the same 8 in (20 cm) thickness, so the seating surface stays level all the way around, while the back cushion is a slimmer 4 in (10 cm). Measure twice; the fabric remembers. For layout rules, see the [RV dinette Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/rv-camper-dinette-cushions/) and [U-shaped cushions in the Atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/u-shaped-cushions/).

## What to send, in order

1. **Draw the U from above**: Label every run: back, left, right.
2. **Write the depth of each run**: Front edge to back, on every piece; side runs may differ.
3. **Choose a thickness per piece**: Seats can be 8 in (20 cm) or more; a back cushion can be thinner.
4. **Add a photo of the space**: One straight-on shot of the dinette to check the drawing against.
5. **Let the workshop review it**: The drawing is reviewed first, then the quote comes back.

## Six cushions in a small trailer

A buyer got in touch about the bench cushions in a small camper trailer. Only the covers needed replacing, and there were six cushions. The workshop asked for photos plus a template or drawing with the dimensions of each one, reviewed the drawing, then quoted.

Six cushions means six sets of numbers. Label them A to F on the drawing and on a strip of tape under each cushion, and nobody has to guess later. Is your dinette a true U, or does one side stop short? The [boat and RV cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/boat-and-rv-cushions/) pages have more layouts.

> **Tailor's margin:** Size a U-shaped dinette as separate pieces: one long seat, two side seats and a back cushion, each with its own width, depth and thickness.

> One U-shaped dinette set ran 8 in (20 cm) thick: a 65 in (165 cm) long seat, two 17.5 x 24.5 in side seats and a 4 in back cushion.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Can you make new U-shaped seat cushions for my campervan?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, U-shaped seating is made regularly. Send a drawing with every run of the U, the depth and the thickness you want, plus a photo of the space.

**A common question:** Can my U-shaped dinette cushions be at least 8 inches thick?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. One U-shaped dinette set was made in velvet with a long seat 65 in wide, 17.5 in deep and 8 in thick, a 65 in back cushion 4 in deep, and two side seats of 17.5 x 24.5 in, also 8 in thick.

**A common question:** Can you make new covers for the bench cushions in my small camper trailer?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send photos plus a template or drawing with the dimensions of each cushion, six in that case; the workshop reviews the drawing and quotes.

**A common question:** Do I have to make a paper template and mail it to you?

**The workshop's answer:** No. A hand drawing with every edge measured, or photos plus measurements, is enough. If you make a full-size template or have old covers, photograph them with measurements marked instead of mailing them.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Should a dinette back cushion be as thick as the seat?

Not necessarily. In one U-shaped set the seats were 8 in (20 cm) thick while the 65 in (165 cm) back cushion was 4 in (10 cm) deep. Give each piece its own thickness on the drawing.

### Can the two side seats of a U be different sizes?

Yes. Each piece of a U is sized separately, so an uneven dinette is fine as long as every run is measured and labeled on the drawing. The workshop reviews the drawing before quoting.

### Do I need new foam to get new camper cushion covers?

No. Covers for existing camper and trailer cushions are made from a template or a drawing with the dimensions of each cushion, plus photos. Measure and label every cushion separately.
