# Is it too late to change the color if my cushion is already cut or made?

*Right, then. Every made-to-order job has a line in it, and the line is drawn with scissors.*

Also asked as: Too late to change the color of material?; Hope it's not too late to change.

> **The quick answer:** Yes, it's too late for a free color swap once the fabric is cut or the cushion is made; the original colors ship. Before shipping, the workshop can send a photo of the finished piece, and if you still want another color, it can make a replacement cover in any fabric code, quoted by size and fabric.

## Key facts

- A color change is possible only before the fabric is cut.
- A finished made-to-order piece ships in its original colors.
- The shop holds the shipment while it answers a late request.
- A photo of the finished piece can be sent before shipping.
- A replacement cover can be made in any fabric code.
- One replacement cover was offered at a reduced price as a goodwill gesture.
- Outdoor fabrics usually cost more than indoor fabrics.
- Each main indoor chart (linen, velvet, soft fabric) runs to about 40 colors, so neighboring shades are close.
- Swatches, about 4 x 4 to 6 x 6 in (10 x 10 to 15 x 15 cm), settle a color before the fabric is cut.
- A replacement cover zips onto the existing foam and, like every zippered cover, washes at 86°F (30°C) maximum.

## Where your order stands, and what a color change means

| Stage | Color change? | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Ordered, fabric not yet cut | [yes] Yes | The workshop checks and the new code goes on the order |
| Fabric cut and in production | [no] Not for free | The cut-off is explained and the options below are offered |
| Made and ready to ship | [no] Not for free | The shipment is held while the shop replies; a photo can be sent |
| Arrived, and the color is wrong for you | New cover | A replacement cover in the code you choose, quoted by size and fabric |

## Why the scissors, not the payment, set the deadline

A made-to-order cushion is cut for your size from your fabric. Before the cut, a color is just a note on an order. After it, that length of fabric is your cushion and nobody else's.

So message the moment you have doubts, dear, and send the new [fabric code](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#fabric-code), not a description. If it's already made, a replacement cover is the tidy fix; the [remakes and fixes pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/custom-cushion-remake-wrong-size-color/) covers the rest, and [screen vs swatch](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-color-screen-vs-daylight/) helps you avoid the next mix-up.

Did you see a swatch before you chose, or only a screen?

## Royal blue that should have been navy

A buyer in the US had a cushion made in a royal blue and then wanted navy instead. The finished cushion couldn't be recolored, so the workshop made a new cover in the navy code and offered it at a reduced price. The cover was indoor fabric; an outdoor one would usually cost more.

## The late-change checklist

- ✓ Message the moment you notice, with the new fabric code.
- ✓ Ask whether the fabric has been cut yet.
- ✓ If the cushion is made, ask for a photo before it ships.
- ✓ Still want another color? Ask for a replacement cover quote in the new code.
- ✓ Indoor or outdoor? Outdoor fabric usually costs more.

> **Tailor's margin:** A cushion color can change only until the fabric is cut. After that the original ships, and a new cover in another fabric code is the fix.

> On a made-to-order cushion, the scissors set the deadline: once the fabric is cut, a replacement cover in a new code is the way to change color.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** My cushion has already been made. Can I still change the colors?

**The workshop's answer:** No. Once a handmade, made-to-order piece is produced in the chosen colors, it can't be changed; the shop holds the shipment to reply, then ships the original colors.

**A common question:** Can I change the fabric color after placing my order?

**The workshop's answer:** Only before the fabric is cut. One request for a darker color came after the fabric was cut and sent to production, so it couldn't be changed.

**A common question:** Is it too late to change the fabric color after I've ordered?

**The workshop's answer:** The shop checks with the workshop. If the piece hasn't been made, the color can still change; once it's made and ready to ship, it can't be swapped for free. A photo of the finished piece was offered before shipping.

**A common question:** How do I make sure the right color is used after I change it?

**The workshop's answer:** Send the exact fabric code, not a description. The shop sends a photo of the chosen color to confirm, and if the receipt and the messages differ, the color agreed in messages is the one made.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does a replacement cover cost the same in outdoor fabric?

Usually not. Outdoor fabrics usually cost more than indoor ones, so a replacement cover is quoted per size and fabric once you name the new code.

### What if I ordered the wrong size instead of the wrong color?

Before production there is no need to cancel. The cushion is remade at the right size: you pay only the difference if it's bigger, or get the difference back if it's smaller.

### Will I know which colors are coming before the box leaves?

You can. Ask for a photo of the finished piece before it ships, and you will see exactly the colors on their way to you.
