# Which way will the stripes run on my bench cushion, and can I choose?

*A stripe is the one pattern that shows its direction from across the room. Here is how the workshop lays it by default, and how to ask for the other way.*

Also asked as: Which way will the stripes sit?; Can the stripes run the short way?

> **The quick answer:** On a bench cushion, stripes run front to back across the depth by default, crossing the short side of the seat. The fabric roll is 55 in (140 cm) wide, so a long cushion striped lengthwise would need a joining seam. You can ask for another direction on the top and sides before production; the team checks it can be done.

## Key facts

- Stripes run front to back across the cushion's depth by default.
- The fabric roll is 55 in (140 cm) wide.
- Stripes running the long way on a long cushion need a joining seam.
- Stripe and corduroy wale direction can be requested for the top and the sides.
- The production team checks technical limits before cutting.
- A stripe too narrow to cut piping from gets piping in a matching solid.
- A cover made the wrong way was replaced, cover only, within 1 to 2 weeks.

## Front to back, or the long way

| | Front to back (default) | The long way (on request) |
|---|---|---|
| Where the stripes point | From the wall to the front edge | From one end of the seat to the other |
| On a 92 in (234 cm) cushion | One piece, no seam | Two pieces joined, because the 55 in (140 cm) roll runs out |
| Top and side band | Both follow the default | Each can be specified in the order |
| When to say so | Nothing to add | In the order, before production, ideally with a reference photo |

## Why “vertical” and “horizontal” describe the same cushion

The eye sits down first, and on a striped cushion it follows the lines. By default those lines run from the wall to the front edge. Some replies call that vertical, others horizontal; both mean the stripes cross the short depth.

The roll decides it. At 55 in (140 cm) wide, it cannot stripe a long window seat end to end in one piece. The [stripe direction Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/striped-cushion-stripe-direction/) draws it out, and [ticking and striped cotton](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/striped-cotton-and-ticking/) shows the swatches. Which way do you want the lines to lead the eye, my friends?

## A 92 in stripe that wanted to run long

A buyer got in touch about a striped cushion 92 in (234 cm) long and wanted the stripes running its whole length. With a 55 in (140 cm) roll, that meant two pieces and a seam, so the shop offered to split the extra cost and lay a bolster over the join. The red stripe was too narrow to cut piping from, so the piping came from a matching solid.

> **Tailor's margin:** Stripes on a bench cushion run front to back unless the order says otherwise, so write the direction you want before production starts.

> Striped bench cushions run front to back by default because a 55 in (140 cm) roll can't stripe a 92 in seat the long way without a seam.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Which way do the stripes go on a bench cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** Normally front to back. On a long cushion, stripes running along the length would need several pieces stitched together, so they stay front to back for a seamless, durable finish. Some sizes can go the other way if you ask before production.

**A common question:** Can I pick which way the stripes or corduroy lines run?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, on the top and on the side edges, to match a reference photo. Say so in the order. The production team checks technical limits and picks the best-looking option if a direction isn't possible.

**A common question:** Can my stripes run the short way across the cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes: write the stripe direction in the order note. When one cover came out with the stripes the wrong way, a replacement cover was sent, cover only with the insert kept, within 1 to 2 weeks including fabric sourcing, production and delivery.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Would a seam on a long striped cushion show?

Yes, it would cross the seat where the two pieces meet. On one 92 in (234 cm) cushion the shop suggested a bolster over the join and offered to split the extra cost. Keeping the stripes front to back avoids the seam altogether.

### Can the piping be cut from the striped fabric itself?

Only when a stripe is wide enough to cut piping from. When it is too narrow, the piping is made from a solid fabric that matches the stripe, so the edge still reads as part of the same cushion.

### Do corduroy wales follow the same rules as stripes?

Yes. The direction of corduroy wales can be requested for the top and the side edges, just like stripes. Write it in the order, ideally with a reference photo, and the production team checks the cut is possible before starting.
