# My floor sofa slides on a smooth floor. How do I stop it?

*Right, then: nothing is broken. A heavy cushion on a slick floor travels, and the first fix may already be in your linen closet.*

Also asked as: The whole sofa moves when we sit on it.; I have to adjust it every other day.

> **The quick answer:** To stop a floor sofa sliding on a smooth floor, put a rug, carpet, piece of fabric or anti-slip mat under it; that usually ends the movement. The seat pieces already have a non-slip bottom panel, but bare hardwood or tile can still let them travel. If the sections drift apart, extra metal bars can be bought to hold them.

## Key facts

- Floor sofas sit directly on the floor and can slide on smooth surfaces.
- Each seat piece has a non-slip bottom panel.
- A rug, carpet, piece of fabric or anti-slip mat underneath stops most sliding.
- Extra metal bars are sold separately to hold the sections together.
- In bed position, the bars keep the pieces from moving.
- The cushions aren't connected to each other, but they are heavy.
- A standard teddy floor sofa is about 79 x 39 in (200 x 100 cm) and weighs about 55 to 77 lb (25 to 35 kg) in total.
- Laid flat as a bed, one sofa covers about 79 x 79 in (200 x 200 cm), or about 79 x 119 in with the ottoman.

## Match the slide to the fix

| What you see | Why | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The whole sofa creeps when someone sits | A slick floor under the non-slip panel | Rug, carpet or anti-slip mat underneath |
| It slides when you lie on it | The same smooth floor, with weight shifting | A rug, or even a piece of fabric, under the sofa |
| Sections drift apart; the back looks messy | The cushions aren't joined to each other | Extra metal bars; keep them fitted in bed position too |

## Fix it in this order

1. Lay a rug or carpet under the whole sofa. One buyer in the US said that fixed most of it.
2. No rug to spare? A piece of fabric or an anti-slip mat works too.
3. Sections still wandering? Order extra metal bars to hold them in line.
4. Still not right? Returns are possible: pack every piece securely; return shipping is the buyer's, and the refund follows inspection.

## Why the non-slip panel can't do it alone

Each seat piece already has a [non-slip bottom](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#non-slip-base) panel. On a rug it has something to hold; on polished boards or tile there is far less, and the sofa can creep when someone sits down hard. I'll admit, dear, I have blamed a sofa before I thought to blame the floor.

The cushions aren't joined to each other; their weight and the [metal support bars](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#metal-support-bars) keep the shape. The [support bars Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/floor-sofa-support-bars-assembly/) covers fitting them, and [modular floor sofas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/modular-floor-sofas/) shows the layouts. What's under yours: boards, tile or a rug?

> **Tailor's margin:** A floor sofa sliding on hardwood or tile usually stops once a rug, carpet or anti-slip mat goes under the whole sofa.

> A floor sofa can slide on smooth floors even with a non-slip bottom panel; a rug underneath usually stops it, and extra metal bars keep sections together.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** My floor sofa slides whenever someone sits on it. What can I do?

**The workshop's answer:** The sofa sits directly on the floor, so smooth surfaces let it slide. A rug or an anti-slip mat underneath usually stops the movement completely. If you'd still rather return it, pack all pieces securely; the buyer pays return shipping, and the refund follows inspection.

**A common question:** It slides when we lie on it. How do I stop that?

**The workshop's answer:** Put a rug or a piece of fabric under the sofa. The pieces have a non-slip bottom panel, but a smooth floor can still let them move.

**A common question:** The sofa keeps sliding apart. How do I keep the pieces together?

**The workshop's answer:** A rug or carpet underneath helps a lot; one customer said it fixed most of the problem. Extra metal bars can be bought to hold the sections. The cushions aren't connected, but they're heavy, and in bed position the bars stop them moving.

**A common question:** Will a non-slip cushion bottom damage a wooden bench?

**The workshop's answer:** No. It's a fabric backing, not glue or a rubber coating, so it's safe on wood. It covers the whole underside and stays hidden.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Are the floor sofa pieces fastened together?

No. The cushions are separate and heavy. The metal bars hold the sections in line, and if yours keep drifting, extra bars can be bought to hold them more firmly.

### Is a non-slip base standard on custom seat cushions?

No, on custom seat cushions it's an optional add-on, and its cost scales with the cushion size. Write 'non-slip base' and your exact size in personalization, and it goes into your quote or a small extra link.

### Can two bench cushions be tied end to end so they don't drift?

Yes. Ties on the corners or the meeting edges can join two bench cushions end to end, stacked cushions, or a seat and back laid flat as a bed. Ask for ties on every cushion in the order.
