# Can I get a softer or firmer floor sofa?

*Partly, partner, and “partly” is doing honest work in that sentence. The seat starts firm by design; what can change is the filling, on request, piece by piece.*

Also asked as: can I request a more squishy filling?; the designer one is too stiff for me

> **The quick answer:** Partly, on request: firmer sofa cushions have been made for users over 220 lb (100 kg), and a puffier, softer filling has been offered for the seat mattresses and backrests. The standard floor sofa seat is firm high-density foam, and most buyers keep it. Confirm the change in writing before production, because early replies said firmness couldn't be customized.

## Key facts

- Floor sofa seat mattresses are firm high-density foam as standard.
- A puffier, softer filling can be made on request for seats and backrests.
- A firmer seat cushion is made for users over 220 lb (100 kg).
- Most customers are happy with the standard comfort.
- Covers are sewn to one foam thickness; thinner foam in an old cover sags.

## Four settings, as the workshop answers them

1. **Standard:** firm [high-density foam](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#high-density-foam) seat mattresses, comfortable for sitting and for sleeping.
2. **Softer:** a puffier filling, on request, for the seat mattresses, the backrests, or both.
3. **Firmer:** a seat cushion made for users over 220 lb (100 kg), once offered with a refund promised if it didn't help.
4. **Thinner:** reorder the thinner size, such as 2 in (5 cm) instead of 4 in (10 cm), rather than swapping foam.

## How to ask, in three lines

1. **Name the piece**: Seat mattress, backrest, or both. Softer filling has been offered for each.
2. **Name the direction**: “Puffier and softer,” or “firmer, for a user over 220 lb (100 kg).”
3. **Confirm it before production**: Early replies said firmness couldn't be customized; later ones offered it on request. Treat it as a request to confirm before production, not a menu option.

## Why the seat starts firm

A floor sofa seat is also a mattress. The standard foam is firm and high-density, comfortable for sitting up in the afternoon and for sleeping flat at night, and almost everyone keeps it that way.

The complaints run in two directions: “the designer one is too stiff” and “not enough support for someone over 220 lb.” Both have answers. Try the [foam firmness finder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/foam-firmness-finder/) before you write, and read the Pattern on [floor sofa bed size and firmness](https://cushionguide.com/guides/floor-sofa-bed-size-firmness/). Which way does yours feel wrong, too hard or too soft?

> **Tailor's margin:** A cushion cover is sewn to one foam thickness: 2 in foam in a 4 in cover goes baggy, so reorder the thinner size instead.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Is the floor sofa foam firm or soft? Can you make it squishier?

**The workshop's answer:** The seat mattresses are firm, high-density foam, comfortable for sitting and sleeping. On request the filling can be made puffier and softer, for the backrests and the seat mattresses, for buyers who find the designer original too stiff.

**A common question:** Will the sofa cushions hold up for someone over 220 lb?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop offered a firmer seating cushion made especially for people over 220 lb (100 kg) as a replacement, with a refund promised if the firmer cushions didn't work.

**A common question:** Is the sofa firm? Could I have a softer seat and firmer back pillows?

**The workshop's answer:** In that early reply, no: the sofas are big and firm, firmness wasn't customized, and almost all customers are happy with the comfort.

**A common question:** My cushion is too thick. Can I put thinner foam in the cover?

**The workshop's answer:** Don't. Covers are sewn to one foam thickness and will sag. Reorder the same size and fabric with the thinner option, such as 2 in instead of 4 in.

## Questions buyers ask next

### What is the thinnest seat cushion worth ordering?

2 in (5 cm) is the thinnest standard option and the recommended minimum for seating. Thinner pads can be custom made; piping works down to about 1 1/4 in (3 cm), and thinner pads come without it.

### Can floor sofa seat cushions double as a bed?

Yes. Many buyers sleep on the corduroy and high-density foam cushions, on a cot or as a floor bed; the standard firm seat is meant for sitting and sleeping alike.

### What thickness do bench, window seat and floor cushions come in as standard?

4 in (10 cm), and most buyers keep it. Other thicknesses, from about 2 in up to 12 in, are made to order, and anything thicker than standard costs more.
