# Is soft fabric more like velvet or more like linen?

*Closer to linen for the eye, smoother than linen for the hand, and no pile at all. Here is where each one sits.*

Also asked as: Is the soft fabric also like a velvet?; Is the soft fabric like a linen?

> **The quick answer:** Soft fabric is neither velvet nor linen: it looks close to linen but has a smoother, more uniform texture without linen's slubs, and it has no pile, so it isn't velvet. Velvet is the plush option with its own color chart. Some listings default to soft fabric even when the title says linen, so check which chart your code comes from.

## Soft fabric, velvet and linen, side by side

| What differs | Soft fabric | Velvet | Linen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface | Smooth and uniform, no pile | Plush pile, the 'fluffy' one | Natural slubs you can see |
| Hand | Very soft and smooth | Plush | Textured |
| Chart | Its own; sometimes split across two charts for more colors | Its own separate chart | Its own chart |
| Fiber | 100% polyester | Polyester or poly-cotton blend | Mostly blends; a 100% linen chart on request |
| Best for | Summer sitting, heavy family use | A deep, plush look | Visible natural texture |

## Read the fabric chart, not the listing title

My friends, the name on a listing and the cloth on the chart don't always agree. Some listings default to soft fabric even when the title mentions linen, so the code you choose decides what arrives. When soft fabric appears in two charts, it's one material shown in a wider range of colors.

In daylight, soft fabric reads like a very tidy linen, even and matte, without the little knots and ridges that give real linen its handwriting. Velvet is the one that holds light in its pile. The eye sits down first, so decide which surface you want to look at every day.

Is your room bright and sunny, or dim and cozy?

## If you don't want the fluffy velvet pile

- ✓ Choose from the soft fabric chart, not the velvet chart.
- ✓ Look at corduroy and teddy if you want texture without velvet's pile.
- ✓ Confirm which chart your code came from before checkout.
- ✓ Order swatches when the surface matters as much as the color.

> **Tailor's margin:** Soft fabric has no pile, so it isn't velvet: it looks close to linen but is smoother and more uniform, without linen's natural slubs.

> If a cushion listing says linen but the code comes from the soft fabric chart, you'll get soft fabric: check the chart, not the title.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Is your soft fabric more even in texture than the linen?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Soft fabric is 100% premium polyester with a much smoother, more uniform texture than linen, which has natural slubs. It's easy to clean and wipe down for daily use.

**A common question:** Is the soft fabric a kind of velvet?

**The workshop's answer:** No. It's the best-selling upholstery fabric, with a very soft, smooth feel, durable and very easy to clean, but it isn't velvet. Some listings default to soft fabric even when the title mentions linen, so check your code's chart.

**A common question:** Is the fabric on this color chart velvet?

**The workshop's answer:** No, that listing's chart is soft fabric, which is similar to linen. Velvet has its own separate color chart.

**A common question:** I don't want the fluffy fabric. What else is there?

**The workshop's answer:** The fluffy one is velvet; for a smoother texture, choose the soft fabric chart. Soft fabric appears in two charts only to show more colors, and corduroy is also available.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does velvet wear out faster than soft fabric?

No. Velvet and soft fabric come from the same manufacturer at the same quality and price, so both last well. Soft fabric is slightly easier to clean, which makes it the better pick for heavy family use.

### Is soft fabric a good choice for someone sensitive to synthetics?

No. Soft fabric is polyester, as are the standard velvet and corduroy. For a synthetic-free cushion, ask for the 100% cotton chart, pure linen or a cotton-linen fabric; covers-only orders are fine too.

### What temperature do soft fabric, velvet and linen covers wash at?

All three are washed at 86°F (30°C), so the choice comes down to surface rather than care. Soft fabric can also be wiped down between washes, which suits a bench or daybed cushion that sees daily use.
