# The front edge of my floor sofa seat sinks when I sit. Is that normal?

*Short answer: some of it is. Longer answer: how to tell normal give from a seat that needs a second look, with numbers instead of adjectives.*

Also asked as: It's sinking around the edges.; The foam is starting to lose its structure.

> **The quick answer:** Some softness at the front edge of a foam floor-sofa seat is normal, especially where legs hang over it. If the edge keeps sinking or the foam starts losing its structure after a few months, send the workshop detailed photos of that area so it can assess the seat; there's no standard fix, and each case is handled from the photos.

## Key facts

- Some edge softness on a foam floor-sofa seat is considered typical.
- Edge sinking that develops after a few months is assessed from detailed photos.
- There is no standard fix; each case is handled on its own.
- Compressed foam can take up to a week to fully expand after unboxing.
- A floor sofa seat sits about 13.5-14.5 in (34-37 cm) high by design.

## Why the front edge gives first

Partner, follow the load. Sit back and your weight spreads across the whole seat. Perch on the front with your legs hanging over, and the same weight lands on a strip a few inches deep, right at the edge, where the foam has nothing in front of it.

That's why the workshop calls some edge softness typical for the foam seat on a [modular floor sofa](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/modular-floor-sofas/), especially where legs hang off it.

What isn't typical is an edge that keeps dropping or loses its shape over a few months. Density and firmness are two different numbers, and the [density vs. firmness Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/foam-density-vs-firmness-ild/) explains the difference. For your seat, though, the photos come first. How deep is the dip on yours, in inches?

## The seat that didn't hold them up

A buyer in the US wrote that when they sat on the edge of the seat cushion, it sank and didn't hold them up firmly. The workshop was straight with them: edge softness is typical for this foam seat. There was no instant fix on the table, and the shop said it would look for a way to make the seat firmer. An honest answer beats an invented miracle every time.

## Edge give vs. a seat worth photographing

| What you see | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Soft give at the front edge from day one | Typical for this foam seat | Nothing yet; note how it sits |
| Flat or soft pieces right after unboxing | Compressed foam still expanding, up to a week | Remove the cover, shake and stretch the foam, wait |
| Edge sinking more after a few months | Foam may be losing structure | Send detailed photos for assessment |
| The whole seat feels too low | Floor sofas sit about 13.5-14.5 in (34-37 cm) high by design | Stack an extra seat cushion or add a 4-5 in (10-13 cm) layer |

## Photos that let the workshop judge the edge

1. **Shoot the seat straight on**: Stand back and photograph the whole seat from the front at seat height, so the edge line shows against the back.
2. **Lay a straightedge across**: Put a yardstick or long level across the seat, front to back. The gap under it at the edge shows the dip better than any adjective.
3. **Measure the dip**: Hold a tape at the lowest point under the straightedge and photograph the reading, in inches.
4. **Show the foam itself**: Unzip the cover and photograph the foam edge on its own, so the workshop sees foam, not fabric slack.

> **Tailor's margin:** A sinking sofa edge photographed with a yardstick across the seat and a tape at the dip says more than 'it feels soft' ever will.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** After a few months the foam is sinking at the edge where our legs hang off. What can be done?

**The workshop's answer:** Send detailed photos of the sagging area so the workshop can assess it. There's no one-size fix; the next step depends on what the photos show.

**A common question:** When we sit on the edge of the seat cushion it sinks. Is that normal?

**The workshop's answer:** Edge softness is typical for this foam seat. The shop didn't offer an instant fix and said it would look for a way to make the seat firmer.

**A common question:** Some sofa cushions were still flat or softer than the others after unboxing. What should I do?

**The workshop's answer:** Give them time: compressed foam can take up to a week to fully expand. Take the cover off, shake and stretch the foam, and if a piece is still flat after several days, send photos so the shop can replace the foam or filling.

**A common question:** Should a chair seat cushion be 2 in or 3 in thick?

**The workshop's answer:** 2 in (5 cm) suits most chair pads, and 3-4 in (7.5-10 cm) adds comfort. Firm 32-density foam won't collapse, though a 2 in pad compresses slightly; for long sitting on a bench, 4 in (10 cm) gives the best support.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is there a standard repair for a sagging floor-sofa edge?

No. Edge sagging is handled case by case from detailed photos of the area. The shop has said it would look for a way to make the seat firmer in such cases, but no single fix is promised in advance.

### How high does a floor sofa seat sit, and can it go higher?

About 13.5-14.5 in (34-37 cm). To reach about 19 in (48 cm), stack an extra seat cushion or base mattresses, or add a custom 4-5 in (10-13 cm) layer. Floor sofas stay low by design.

### Can I order a thickness between the listed options?

Yes. Choose the nearest thickness option and write the exact figure, such as 2.5 in or 4.5 in, in the personalization section. If you picked the wrong option, tell the shop before production starts.
