# Why is my sofa backrest filled with shredded foam instead of one block?

*Because a solid block would make a backrest that leans back at you like a car door. The pieces are the spec, not the leftovers.*

Also asked as: Is it a single piece of foam or shredded?; The backrests aren't as solid as in the photos.

> **The quick answer:** Shredded foam in a sofa backrest is intentional: backrests and armrests are filled with shredded or layered foam pieces instead of one block so they stay soft and flexible, not rigid, and the shop says the fill lasts longer in use. It is not offcut waste. A bumpy backrest usually means the filling has shifted, and it reshapes by hand.

- Replacement arm inserts and replacement covers can be sent.

## One block for the seat, pieces for the back

| Part | Fill | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Seat | T28 high-resilience cold foam, ILD 42 | Carries your weight |
| Backrest | Shredded or layered foam pieces | Stays soft and flexible, not rigid |
| Armrest | Shredded foam | Soft to lean on; inserts replaceable if they lose shape |

## Offcuts? No. Pieces on purpose.

Fair suspicion, partner. You spot foam bits through a small rip and picture somebody sweeping the cutting room floor into your sofa. Nobody did. The back is filled with [shredded foam](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#shredded-foam), or layered pieces, because a backrest has a different job from a seat. The seat carries load straight down. The back takes a lean from every angle, and a single block would push back like a panel. Pieces let it give.

The shop's own number: more than 4,000 sofas sold without complaints about the fill. The trade-offs between pieces, a solid wedge and fiber are laid out in [back cushion fill compared](https://cushionguide.com/guides/back-cushion-fill-shredded-foam-vs-wedge/), and the full range lives under [modular floor sofas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/modular-floor-sofas/). Does yours feel lumpy, or just softer than the photos suggested?

## When the backrest feels wrong

- ✓ Bumpy or uneven: the filling has shifted; work it back into place by hand.
- ✓ Arm cushions collapse even after puffing: ask for replacement arm inserts.
- ✓ A small rip with foam bits escaping: vacuum the bits up and ask for a replacement cover.
- ✓ Seat feels different from the back: expected, since the seat is one foam block and the back is pieces.

> **Tailor's margin:** A shredded foam backrest that feels bumpy has usually just shifted; push the pieces back into place by hand before you call it a defect.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Are the backrests and armrests one block of foam, or shredded?

**The workshop's answer:** Shredded foam, not a single block, so they stay soft instead of rigid. The shop says that's intentional and it has sold more than 4,000 sofas without that complaint. If arm inserts lose their shape over time, replacements can be sent.

**A common question:** There's a small tear and bits of stuffing are coming out. What's inside?

**The workshop's answer:** Shredded sponge, meaning foam pieces, which the shop says lasts longer in use. Stray bits vacuum up easily, and a replacement cover was sent for the torn part.

**A common question:** Why is my sofa filled with foam pieces rather than one solid block?

**The workshop's answer:** The layered foam fill gives structure and flexibility; the pieces are part of how the sofa is built, not waste. If a seat feels uneven, the filling has usually shifted and can be reshaped by hand.

**A common question:** Is T28 ILD 42 seat foam softer than the T30 ILD 45 in the earlier teddy sofa?

**The workshop's answer:** Slightly, on paper: the seats use T28 high-resilience cold foam at ILD 42 versus T30 at ILD 45. The shop says the difference in feel and lifespan is almost nothing.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does shredded fill wear out faster than a foam block?

The shop's experience runs the other way: it says shredded fill lasts longer in use, and more than 4,000 sofas have sold without complaints about it. What does happen is shifting, which you fix by working the pieces back by hand.

### Is it normal to see foam crumbs after a cover tears?

Yes, that is the shredded fill showing through the opening. Vacuum up the stray bits, then contact the shop: a replacement cover was sent in exactly this case, so the pieces stay where they belong.

### What if my armrests keep collapsing after I plump them?

Arm inserts can lose their shape over time. When working the fill by hand no longer brings them back up, ask the shop: replacement arm inserts can be sent, so you replace the insert rather than the sofa.
