# How much is a seat cushion with a matching back cushion?

*A back cushion is not a fixed add-on, my friend. It is a second cushion, cut and filled on its own, and it is priced like one.*

Also asked as: Pricing for bench and back, individually or as a pair?; Cost for a seat and back cushion?

> **The quick answer:** A seat cushion and its matching back are priced separately, each by its own size, so select the closest sizes on the listing to see both, then order them together. On long benches the back ran about half to two-thirds of the seat's price, while a back larger than its seat cost more than the seat. Ask the workshop to confirm shipping in writing, my friend.

## Key facts

- Seat and back cushions are priced individually by size.
- Both prices show when you select the closest sizes on the listing.
- A back cushion larger than its seat cost more than the seat.
- On long benches the back cost about half to two-thirds of the seat price.
- Piped pairs and outdoor fabric pairs are quoted the same way.
- Shipping is stated with each quote, apart from the piece prices.

## Two cushions, two prices

A back cushion is not the seat's shadow. It gets its own cutting, its own sewing and its own filling, so it is priced on its own size, the same way the seat is.

The easy way to see both numbers is the listing itself: pick the closest size for the seat, then the closest size for the back, and read them off. Then order the two together. Buy the cushion once, cry once. The teak dock bench in the photo carries a striped [outdoor cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/outdoor-cushions/), and outdoor pairs are quoted exactly the same way. For the back's height and depth, see [back cushion sizing](https://cushionguide.com/guides/back-cushion-height-sizing/), or sketch the pair in the [bench cushion builder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/bench-cushion-builder/).

What does your bench measure, end to end?

## Real pairs, and how the back compared

| Seat | Back | How the back priced |
|---|---|---|
| 32 x 84 x 5 in (81 x 213 x 13 cm), outdoor fabric | 8 x 84 x 4 in (20 x 213 x 10 cm) | About two-thirds of the seat |
| About 45 x 16 in (115 x 40 cm) bench | About 45 x 12 in (115 x 30 cm) | About half of the seat |
| 15.5 x 33 x 4.5 in (39 x 84 x 11 cm), piped | 21 x 33.5 x 4.5 in (53 x 85 x 11 cm), piped | A little more than the seat; the back was larger |
| About 86 x 25 in (218 x 64 cm) | About 86 x 19 3/4 in (218 x 50 cm) | Quoted together as one pair |

## What to send for a seat-and-back quote

- ✓ Seat length, depth and thickness
- ✓ Back length, height and thickness
- ✓ Fabric type, indoor or outdoor, with the code
- ✓ Piping, if you want it on both pieces

> **Tailor's margin:** Price a bench seat and back cushion as two pieces: on long benches the back ran about half to two-thirds of the seat.

> A back cushion isn't a fixed add-on: priced by its own size, a back larger than its seat cost more than the seat.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** What would an outdoor bench cushion with a matching back cost?

**The workshop's answer:** In outdoor fabric, a 32 x 84 x 5 in (81 x 213 x 13 cm) bench cushion and an 8 x 84 x 4 in (20 x 213 x 10 cm) back were quoted separately, the back at roughly two-thirds of the seat. Check both by selecting the closest sizes on the listing.

**A common question:** How much for a matching seat and back cushion, both piped?

**The workshop's answer:** Each was quoted on its own: a 15.5 x 33 in seat and a 21 x 33.5 in back, both 4.5 in deep with piping. The back came to a little more because it was the larger piece.

**A common question:** Can you quote a bench seat and back at about 86 x 25 in and 86 x 19 3/4 in (218 x 64 and 218 x 50 cm)?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Metric sizes are quoted the same way, and the seat and back came back together in one quote.

**A common question:** How much is a church pew cushion about 48 x 14 in, and what if I add a back?

**The workshop's answer:** A pew cushion of that size and a 45 x 16 in (115 x 40 cm) bench cushion were quoted at the same price. Adding a 45 x 12 in (115 x 30 cm) backrest raised the total by roughly half the seat's price.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is a back cushion always cheaper than its seat cushion?

No, it depends on size. On long benches, where the back is much shallower than the seat, it ran about half to two-thirds of the seat's price. On a piped pair where the back was the larger piece, the back cost a little more.

### Do piping or outdoor fabric change how a seat-and-back pair is quoted?

The method stays the same: each piece is priced by its own size in the fabric you choose. Piped pairs and outdoor fabric pairs are both quoted piece by piece, and then ordered together.

### Is shipping included in a seat-and-back quote?

Not automatically. Shipping is stated with the quote, so add the two piece prices and the shipping line together for the cost of the pair at your door.
