# Can I get the same color in a different fabric, like linen instead of velvet?

*A color is not only a dye. It is dye plus the way a fabric holds the light, and velvet and linen hold it very differently.*

Also asked as: Does the green exist in corduroy and velvet?; Same color, but in gingham fabric?

> **The quick answer:** Close, but not identical: the same color never reads exactly alike in velvet, linen and corduroy, because each fabric reflects light its own way. The workshop names the nearest match instead, such as linen L-53 beside Burnt Terracotta 112 velvet, or soft fabric beside a corduroy seat, and it can search a wider linen catalog for the closest named linen.

## Key facts

- Same color names differ in tone between corduroy and plain velvet.
- Soft fabric tones come much closer to the corduroy tones.
- Linen L-53 is very close to Burnt Terracotta 112 velvet.
- Velvet and linen reflect light differently.
- A wider linen catalog exists beyond the listing chart, including 678 for rust orange and 559 for a beige-gray.
- Gingham fabrics come from a different maker, so exact cross-range matches aren't guaranteed.
- Fabric swatches, about 4 x 4 to 6 x 6 in (10 x 10 to 15 x 15 cm), show how each fabric takes the light before you commit.
- The sofa corduroy comes in about 9-10 colors, fewer than the velvet and soft fabric charts.
- Velvet, linen and soft fabric covers all follow the same care: machine wash at up to 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle.
- Upholstery fabrics are chosen at a stated minimum weight of about 7.4 oz per sq yd (250 g/m²).

## Nearest matches across fabrics

| You have or want | Nearest in the other fabric | How close |
|---|---|---|
| Burnt Terracotta 112 velvet | Linen L-53 | Very close; the gap is how each fabric reflects light |
| A corduroy seat | Soft fabric for the back pillows | Much closer than plain velvet of the same name |
| Rust orange, in linen | Linen 678 from the wider catalog | The closest named linen |
| A beige-gray, in linen | Linen 559 from the wider catalog | A named beige-gray linen |
| Earlier cushions, new gingham backrests | The nearest code on the gingham chart | Close, not guaranteed: a different fabric maker |

## Why L-53 isn't brighter than 112

My friends, the orange linen in the photos is L-53, and it sits very close to Burnt Terracotta 112 velvet. When the two look different, L-53 is not the brighter color. Velvet's pile draws some light down into its depth and gives the rest back as sheen; linen's flat weave returns it evenly. Choose by the fabric you love, not by fear of a mismatch.

The same logic runs through the [linen and cotton-linen library](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-and-cotton-linen/) and the [velvet library](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/).

## The green that split in two

A buyer in the US planned a [banquette](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/banquette-cushions/) with a corduroy seat and plain velvet back pillows, both in the same green. The trouble: colors with one name carry different tones in corduroy and in non-corduroy velvet. The workshop suggested soft fabric for the back pillows, because its tones come much closer to the corduroy's, at a small extra cost on the order.

## Past the listing chart

The basic linen chart is only the front door. Behind it sits a wider linen catalog, and the workshop will search it for the nearest named linen: 678 for a rust orange or cinnamon, 559 for a beige-gray. Gingham-style fabrics come from a different maker, so backrests added to an earlier order land close to the first color, not exactly on it. The [dye lot Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/dye-lots-matching-cushions-later/) explains why later orders drift.

Which two fabrics are you hoping will agree?

> **Tailor's margin:** The same color name looks different in velvet, linen and corduroy; ask for the nearest named match, like linen L-53 beside Burnt Terracotta 112 velvet.

> Velvet and linen reflect light differently, so linen L-53 sits very close to Burnt Terracotta 112 velvet without ever becoming its identical twin.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Can gingham backrests exactly match the color of cushions I bought earlier?

**The workshop's answer:** They can be made, but gingham-style fabrics come from a different fabric maker, so the tone may be close rather than identical. Send measurements, the gingham chart code and a reference photo, and the shop sets up a custom order link.

**A common question:** Is the orange linen in your photos the same shade as the burnt terracotta velvet?

**The workshop's answer:** The orange is linen L-53, very close to Burnt Terracotta 112 velvet. The small difference comes from how linen and velvet reflect light, not because L-53 is brighter, so choose the fabric type you prefer.

**A common question:** If the seat is corduroy and the back pillows are plain velvet, will the green match?

**The workshop's answer:** Not exactly. Same-named colors have different tones in corduroy and plain velvet. Soft fabric comes much closer to the corduroy tones, so it was suggested for the back pillows at a small extra cost.

**A common question:** Can you match a velvet color like rust orange or cinnamon in linen?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Beyond the basic linen chart there's a wider linen catalog, and the shop suggests the closest named linen, such as 678 for rust orange or 559 for a beige-gray.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is there more linen to choose from than the listing chart shows?

Yes. A wider linen catalog sits behind the basic chart, and the workshop searches it for the nearest named linen to a velvet or soft-fabric color you already have. Ask with the code you want to echo.

### Does soft fabric cost more than velvet for banquette back pillows?

A little. When soft fabric was suggested for back pillows so they would sit closer to a corduroy seat, it added a small extra cost to the banquette order. Ask for the exact figure with your quote.

### What should I send to add matching backrests to an older order?

Measurements for each backrest, the fabric code you want, and a reference photo of the cushions you already own. The workshop then sets up a custom order link; expect a close tone, not an exact one, across fabric makers.
