# The color is what I ordered, but I don't like it in my room. Can I return it?

*Pull up a chair. This one stings, and there's a kinder way through it than a box and a shipping label.*

Also asked as: I just don't like it in person; Don't like the color and feel in person

> **The quick answer:** Usually yes, but at your own cost: when a cushion matches the fabric code and size you ordered, color preference isn't treated as a fault. Check the listing's return terms for the window; in past cases the refund came once the cushion arrived back undamaged. A replacement cover in another fabric at cost, or a partial refund to keep it, has suited some buyers better.

## Key facts

- Color preference on a correctly made cushion is not treated as a fault.
- In past preference returns, return shipping was at the buyer's cost; the return window is in the listing's return terms.
- In past returns, the refund was issued once the item arrived back undamaged.
- A replacement cover in another fabric has been offered at cost, with daylight photos of candidate fabrics first.
- Goodwill partial refunds have been offered to buyers who keep the item, with the amount agreed case by case.
- Screens and studio lighting can make warm tones look different in daylight.

## Three ways forward when the color is right but wrong

1. A replacement cover in a fabric you do love, made at cost. Ask for daylight photos of the candidates first.
2. Keep the cushion and take a goodwill partial refund; past amounts were agreed case by case.
3. Return it under the listing's return terms; in past cases return shipping was on the buyer and the refund came once it arrived back undamaged.

## Before you pack the box, check

- ✓ Compare the cushion with the fabric code on your order. If it matches, it's preference, not a fault.
- ✓ Look at it by a window in daylight, not under a lamp at night.
- ✓ Count the days: the return window is in the listing's return terms.
- ✓ Price the return shipping before you pick the full return.
- ✓ Ask whether a new cover alone would do; remakes are often just a cover.

## The cushion that was perfect and still wasn't

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop after their cushions arrived made exactly to the fabric they'd picked, not a stitch out of place, and they simply didn't like it. That happens on the best porches. So the workshop laid out the roads: new covers in a different fabric for the fabric cost alone, or a partial refund if they kept the cushions, or a full return with the shipping on them and the refund once the cushions came back undamaged. Nobody has to pretend to love a cushion. But nobody should pay to ship one back without seeing the cheaper roads first.

## Why the right color can still be the wrong cushion

Your cushion was cut to your [fabric code](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#fabric-code) and your size, for you alone. When it arrives matching both, there's nothing to fix, so a change of heart counts as preference, not a fault. That's why a free return or an automatic full refund hasn't been on the table in past cases.

Here's the part folks miss: sometimes the color didn't change, the light did. Screens and studio lighting can make warm tones read differently from daylight on your [floor cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/floor-cushions/) at home. The [screen vs daylight Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-color-screen-vs-daylight/) and [ordering swatches first](https://cushionguide.com/guides/fabric-swatches-before-ordering/) can spare you this heartache, and the [remake Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/custom-cushion-remake-wrong-size-color/) covers what a new cover involves.

What color did you fall for on the screen, neighbor, and what does it look like at noon?

> **Tailor's margin:** Before paying to ship a whole cushion back, ask for a replacement cover in another fabric at cost, with daylight photos of the options first.

> If the cushion matches the fabric code you ordered, disliking the color counts as preference, not a fault, and in past cases the return shipping was the buyer's.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Can I send back a made-to-order piece because I don't like the color or the look?

**The workshop's answer:** In past cases, made-to-order pieces weren't fully refunded for visual reasons alone. The options were a replacement of the affected parts, a partial refund, or a return at your own cost with a refund once it arrives back.

**A common question:** The color and size aren't what I expected from the photos. Can I return it?

**The workshop's answer:** Made exactly to the chart color and the ordered size, the item has no defect, so in that case return shipping fell to the buyer, and it can be expensive. Screens and studio lighting can make warm tones look different in daylight. The workshop offered a discount on a new order, or a partial refund while keeping the item.

**A common question:** The color is correct but it doesn't suit my room. Can I exchange it?

**The workshop's answer:** Since the fabric matches the code ordered, it counts as preference rather than a fault. The workshop offered a replacement cover in another color at cost, with daylight photos of candidate fabrics first. A return under the listing's terms was also possible, return shipping at the buyer's expense, refunded once it arrived.

**A common question:** I picked the wrong color by mistake. Can it be made again in the right one?

**The workshop's answer:** Tell the workshop straight away; before production the fabric code can be changed. Once made, it can be remade in the right color at production cost, often just a new cover. Ask the workshop for its current production time in writing.

## Questions buyers ask next

### What happens if a cushion arrives damaged or the wrong item comes?

In past cases the workshop replaced damaged or missing items at no charge, often just the affected part, and made and sent the correct items when the wrong ones arrived. Buyers who'd rather keep the item took a partial refund instead.

### My floor sofa covers came in a color I didn't order. Do they go back?

Usually not. In past cases, after a well-lit photo, the workshop sent the correct covers and any missing bars at no charge, and the wrong set often stayed with the buyer as a spare, sometimes free, sometimes at a discount.

### How do I avoid a color surprise on my next cushion order?

Order fabric swatches first and judge them by a window in daylight, not on a screen. Screens and studio lighting can shift warm tones, and daylight photos of candidate fabrics can be requested before a new cover is cut.
