# Are your cushion fabrics treated with flame retardants or other chemicals?

*A buyer who is sensitive to chemicals reads a fabric the way I read light: slowly, and twice. Here is what the workshop said, and, just as useful, what it did not.*

Also asked as: Any toxic chemicals like flame retardant or PFAS?; Does the fabric have a Prop 65 warning?

> **The quick answer:** No, the cushion fabrics are not treated with flame retardants, no finish or coating is added, and no fiberglass goes into the pieces. The fabrics come from a mill certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (03.T.3239). For strict low-tox homes, a piece can be made in a special natural fabric from the catalog, such as a cotton option. PFAS and Prop 65 were not answered one by one.

## Key facts

- The fabric is not treated with flame retardant.
- No added finish or coating is applied.
- No fiberglass is used in the pieces.
- The fabrics come from a mill certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (03.T.3239).
- Strict low-tox requests can be made in a special fabric, such as a cotton option.
- The cotton option is not available in corduroy.
- The cotton stripe and ticking fabrics are 100% cotton; one stripe chart is 98% cotton and 2% polyester.

## What the workshop confirmed, line by line

- ✓ **No flame-retardant finish** on the fabric, whether the question came with a floor sofa or a single cushion.
- ✓ **No added finish or coating** on the cloth. A buyer with allergies got the same answer.
- ✓ **No fiberglass** anywhere in the pieces, asked about for a low floor sofa.
- ✓ **Fabrics from a mill certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (03.T.3239).** The [OEKO-TEX pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/oeko-tex-standard-100-cushions/) explains what that label covers.
- ✓ **A natural-fiber route** for strict needs: a special fabric from the catalog, such as a cotton option. See [cushions for allergy-prone homes](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushions-for-allergies-natural-fibers/).

## What nobody promised you

- ✗ A line-by-line answer on PFAS or Prop 65. The replies said no finish or coating is added and stopped there.
- ✗ A foam certification label. One was asked about and not confirmed, so do not count on it.
- ✗ The cotton option in corduroy. That special fabric is not made in corduroy.

## Reading a low-tox answer like a swatch

A buyer in the US asked about a floor sofa for a very sensitive home: flame retardants, formaldehyde, fiberglass. The reply covered fiberglass and fire-retardant treatment plainly, named the OEKO-TEX mills, and offered to make the whole sofa in a cotton from the catalog.

That is the honest shape of it, my friends. Clear on what is added to the cloth, and quiet on the questions that were not answered one by one. If a warning label worries you, the [Prop 65 pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/prop-65-warning-cushions/) explains what one does and does not mean, and [cushions without added flame retardants](https://cushionguide.com/guides/flame-retardant-free-cushions/) shows how to check any maker. The sofas themselves live under [modular floor sofas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/modular-floor-sofas/).

Which matters most in your home: the finish, the fill or the fiber?

> **Tailor's margin:** Ask a cushion maker three separate questions: any flame-retardant finish, any added finish or coating, any fiberglass. One vague reassurance answers none of them.

> The workshop's cushion fabrics carry no flame-retardant finish and no added finish or coating; for a strict low-tox home, a cotton option can replace the standard cloth.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can a whole floor sofa be made in cotton for a sensitive household?

Yes. For buyers with strict low-tox requirements, the workshop can make pieces in a special fabric from its catalog, such as a cotton option. That cotton isn't available in corduroy, so choose the look with that in mind.

### Can I judge a fabric's texture before it comes into the house?

Yes. Close-ups and real-life photos of specific fabric codes are sent on request, and samples from the fabric-samples listing are the recommended way to judge texture in hand before ordering a cushion or sofa.

### What is the workshop's soft fabric made of?

The soft fabric, codes 901 to 946, is the best-selling upholstery weave: a durable, easy-clean poly-cotton blend with a soft feel. It's wipeable and washes at 86°F (30°C). Choose cotton-linen if you want a natural fiber.
