# Are the neutral stripes like N01 to N05 gray, beige or olive?

*Stripes are the hardest colors to read on a screen, because two tones share every inch. Here is how I sort the neutral range, and when I would send you to the velvet chart instead.*

Also asked as: I believe it is gray but hard to tell.; An olive or sage stripe, but not a green green.

> **The quick answer:** N03 is a cream and beige stripe, not gray, and the other neutral stripes are best judged from a photo of a finished cushion rather than a swatch thumbnail. Piping in 108, 110 or 912 picks up N03's darker stripe; the listing photo shows velvet 108. If no stripe gives a true sage or olive, the velvet chart has more greens.

## Key facts

- N03 is a cream and beige stripe, not gray.
- Piping in 108, 110 or 912 suits N03's darker stripe.
- The contrast piping in the N03 listing photo is velvet 108.
- A finished-cushion photo is the most reliable way to judge a stripe's tone.
- The velvet chart offers more greens than the stripe range.
- The striped fabrics are 100% cotton (one chart is 98% cotton), with woven-in stripes, so custom stripe colors aren't possible.
- Stripe widths vary by code, from about 1/4 in to 2 in.

## How to read a neutral stripe before you order

- ✓ **Ask for a finished-cushion photo.** A stripe at full size shows its true tone; the workshop sent one of N01 to settle olive, beige or brown.
- ✓ **Echo the darker stripe in the piping.** On N03 that means 108, 110 or 912. The [piping pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-piping-matching-contrast-none/) explains the choice.
- ✓ **Know what the listing photo shows:** N03 with contrast piping in velvet 108.
- ✓ **Hold the photo against your own wall** in daylight before you decide.

## Where neutral stripes mislead

- ✗ Calling N03 gray from a thumbnail. In hand it is cream and beige.
- ✗ Expecting a sage from the neutral stripes. The [velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/) chart has more greens.
- ✗ Treating a phone close-up as gospel. Tones can shift slightly; a physical sample is the surest check.

## A Kallax bench in a peachy-pink room

A buyer wanted an olive or sage stripe for an [IKEA Kallax](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/ikea-kallax-cushions/) bench cushion in a little girl's bedroom with peachy-pink walls, and asked for sage, not a green green. On a screen, the N-01 to N-05 swatches could have been beige, brown or olive. The workshop sent a photo of a finished N01 cushion and pointed to the velvet chart in case no stripe gave the sage the room needed.

## Why a stripe fools the eye

A stripe is two colors taking turns. Shrink it to a thumbnail and the turns blur into a third color that exists nowhere on the cloth, which is how a cream and beige stripe gets called gray. Daylight never lies; your screen sometimes does.

For the whole family of [striped cotton and ticking](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/striped-cotton-and-ticking/), and for greens that lean toward the garden, see [sage, olive and khaki cushions](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/sage-olive-and-khaki-cushions/). What color are the walls your stripe will live beside, my friends?

> **Tailor's margin:** Stripe N03 looks gray on a screen but is a cream and beige stripe; piping in 108, 110 or 912 picks up its darker line.

> If a neutral stripe could be olive, beige or brown, ask for a photo of a finished cushion in that code; a screen thumbnail rarely settles it.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Are the N-01 to N-05 stripes beige, brown or olive? I want a sage stripe for a Kallax bench.

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop sent a photo of a finished N01 cushion, the most reliable way to judge whether it reads olive, beige or brown. If no stripe gives the sage look, the velvet chart may have a better match.

**A common question:** Is N03 gray, and which piping matches its darker stripe?

**The workshop's answer:** N03 is actually a cream and beige stripe. Piping in 108, 110 or 912 suits the darker stripe; the contrast piping in the listing photo is 108 from the velvet chart.

**A common question:** Can you send close-ups of the stripe codes I'm considering?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Name the codes and the workshop sends free close-up photos of the real fabric, side by side or with your piping. They're phone photos, so tones can shift slightly; physical samples are the surest check.

**A common question:** Can you pick the stripe and piping for me?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop prefers you choose, since color is personal, but will suggest codes on request and send close-ups. Narrow your list to 2 or 3 codes; you can switch before production.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can a stripe be woven in my own two colors?

No. Stripes are woven by the fabric manufacturer, so their colors are fixed and a plain color can't be made striped. You can choose a different piping color, pick the closest existing stripe, or ask for a similar print to be sourced.

### Which way do the stripes run on a long bench cushion?

By default front to back across the cushion, because lengthwise stripes on a long cushion exceed the 55 in (140 cm) fabric roll and need a seam. Another direction can be requested before production if it's technically possible.

### What if a stripe code I ordered before is missing from the chart?

Ask the workshop. Codes are sometimes renumbered, missing colors can be re-added for reorders, and truly discontinued fabrics get a nearest-match suggestion, often in velvet or linen.
