# That's more than I expected. Can you do a better price?

*Most buyers ask quietly, as if it were rude. It isn't. A quote is a short conversation, and it has an end.*

## What the price is made of

Ask once, plainly. Say what you hoped to spend. **A common question:** The quote is over what I planned. Is there any give?

**The workshop's answer:** Often a little. Custom quotes have come down for a first purchase, a bulk order or a shared budget: one pair of velvet cushions came down about 13%, and one first order about 7%.

**A common question:** Can you go lower on a seating set?

**The workshop's answer:** Within limits. A seating set came down in two rounds, about 14% in all, and a two-cushion window seat order about 12%. The workshop then called the last figure its best price.

**A common question:** I have a cheaper quote from another maker. Are you flexible?

**The workshop's answer:** Modestly. With a lower competing quote in hand, one buyer got about 7% off, and the workshop pointed to its 32-density foam and quality fabrics. A much lower offer on a floor sofa was declined.

**A common question:** Is there a first-purchase discount?

**The workshop's answer:** There's no fixed one, but first orders have been given a small reduction. On custom work the workshop also sets a lowest price, and one request about 18% under it was turned down.

### Why can't a custom cushion price drop by half?

The price covers foam of about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), quality fabric and handwork on each piece. That leaves a modest margin, which is why reductions have stayed small.

### Does ordering several cushions at once bring the price down?

Usually. Bulk and multi-piece orders are among the cases where custom quotes move most. Send every size in one message so the whole set is priced as one order rather than piece by piece.

### What if I offer far less than the quoted figure?
