# How do I find the right navy or slate blue fabric for my cushion?

*Navy is the color phone cameras rarely get right: it sinks toward black or brightens toward royal. The fix is a sample in your own daylight.*

Also asked as: A deep blue color I'm trying to match; Olive green or dusty slate blue?

> **The quick answer:** Order samples: phone photos rarely show navy accurately, and each fabric chart holds only one or two navy blues, so a sample of those codes is the safest match. In velvet, 131 is deep navy and 129 is teal blue, and the chart also carries dusty slate blues. In the P-series chart, P-67 is a solid blue and P-66 has a blue-toned ground.

## A navy match, in order

- ✓ Find the one or two navy codes on your chart; there are rarely more.
- ✓ Don't trust a phone photo of your navy; it rarely reads true.
- ✓ Ask for close-up photos of any code that catches your eye.
- ✓ Order samples of the navy shortlist and hold them in daylight beside the room.
- ✓ Judge body and piping together: 131 with 112 terracotta, or 129 with 131.

## The blues on the charts

| Code | Chart | Reads as |
|---|---|---|
| 131 | Velvet | Deep navy |
| 129 | Velvet | Teal blue |
| 112 | Velvet | Burnt terracotta, a warm partner for navy |
| P-66 | P-series | Blue-toned ground |
| P-67 | P-series | Solid blue |

## Why navy slips past the camera

Daylight never lies; your screen sometimes does. Navy sits so close to black that a phone photo rarely holds it, and the workshop won't pretend to read an exact tone from one. What it can tell you is where the navies live: one or two per chart, no more.

So the [velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/) chart gives you deep navy 131 and teal blue 129, with dusty slate blues and olive greens nearby. Order [fabric swatches before ordering](https://cushionguide.com/guides/fabric-swatches-before-ordering/) the cushion, and read [screen color versus daylight](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-color-screen-vs-daylight/) before you judge them. Tell me, my friends: is your navy the ink of a midnight sky, or the gray-blue of slate after rain?

## Navy, slate and terracotta on two cushions

A buyer in the US wanted navy, slate blue and terracotta across two [bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/). The workshop drew them as a pair: deep navy 131 with burnt terracotta 112 piping on one, teal blue 129 with deep navy 131 piping on the other, so the navy runs through both. It added a fair warning: photos of those codes may show a slight tone difference from lighting.

> **Tailor's margin:** Navy cushion fabric rarely photographs true on a phone; order samples of the chart's one or two navy codes and judge them in daylight.

> For navy, slate blue and terracotta on two cushions: velvet 131 with 112 terracotta piping on one, 129 teal with 131 navy piping on the other.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** My phone doesn't capture my navy well. How can I match it?

**The workshop's answer:** Phone photos rarely show navy accurately, so the workshop can't read the exact tone from one. Each chart has one or two navy blues; the safest route is a sample order of those codes, or close-up photos of any code that catches your eye.

**A common question:** Do you have olive green, dusty slate blue or other blues in velvet or the patterned fabric?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The velvet chart includes olive green and dusty slate blue shades. In the P-series fabric, P-66 has a blue-toned background and P-67 is a solid blue; close-ups of any code are available.

**A common question:** Which velvet codes give a navy, slate blue and terracotta look?

**The workshop's answer:** Deep navy 131 with burnt terracotta 112 piping for one cushion; teal blue 129 with deep navy 131 piping for the other. Expect a slight tone difference from lighting in photos.

**A common question:** Which code is olive green, and will it look too bright?

**The workshop's answer:** Olive is velvet 123, a muted earthy olive, with L24 as the linen alternative. Under white light 123 reads yellow-lime; under warm light it calms down. Check close-ups or samples in your room.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How many navy options should I expect on a chart?

One or two per fabric chart. That keeps a sample order small: request the navy codes from the chart you like, plus any slate or teal neighbors, and compare them side by side in daylight.

### Can I pair navy velvet with a warm accent?

Yes. For a navy, slate blue and terracotta scheme, the workshop paired deep navy velvet 131 with burnt terracotta 112 piping. Ask for both codes photographed side by side before deciding.

### Is a photo of my navy enough for the workshop to match?

It's a start, not a finish. The workshop can suggest the nearest codes, but navy rarely photographs accurately, so treat those suggestions as a shortlist and confirm with samples.
