# Which of your cushion fabrics is the most durable?

*Everyone wants the one cloth that survives children, dogs and long Sunday dinners. The honest answer comes in three layers, and the first one is reassuring.*

Also asked as: Which fabric holds up best?; What is more durable, linen or soft?

> **The quick answer:** For the heaviest daily use, soft fabric is the most durable cushion fabric on the charts: tough, soft to the touch and easy to clean. Every fabric is upholstery-grade, and velvet, soft fabric and linen are broadly equal, though velvet was rated tougher than linen. Velvet is indoor-only, so choose the outdoor range anywhere a cushion may get wet.

## “Which one holds up best?”

The first answer the workshop gives is the generous one: all of them. Every fabric on the charts is upholstery-grade and built for daily use, and velvet, soft fabric and linen are described as broadly equal, so you may choose on color and hand without guilt, my friends.

That is true. It is not the whole story, and when buyers press, the workshop does rank them.

## “Fine, but if you had to pick one?”

For very heavy use, soft fabric: durable, soft to the touch and easy to clean, the cloth for a family bench that never gets a day off. Asked to choose between linen and [velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/), the workshop named velvet the tougher of the two.

The gentlest in the family is the 100% cotton stripe, lovely on a sunny window seat and less suited to hard daily wear. Who will sit on yours hardest, the dog or the teenagers? The side-by-side lives in [cushion fabric types compared](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-fabric-types-compared/).

## “Is velvet water resistant?”

No. Velvet, including the best-selling shade numbered 112, is an indoor fabric with no water-resistant properties. Anywhere a cushion may get wet, choose the [outdoor range](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/); the workshop considers the outdoor fabrics its toughest of all.

So the ranking has a footnote. Indoors, soft fabric leads. Outdoors, velvet is not in the race.

## A hard-wearing beige for a rental

A buyer furnishing a rental property wrote to the workshop asking for the most hard-wearing beige. The workshop recommended linen, velvet or soft fabric, all three of which it calls [performance fabrics](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#performance-fabric), and left the choice open.

The buyer chose a beige linen; for a house full of guests, hard wear mattered more to them than the velvet look. A sensible, quiet choice, and a warm one in the right light.

> **Tailor's margin:** For a cushion used hard every day, pick soft fabric; between linen and velvet, velvet wears harder, but only outdoor fabric belongs where it gets wet.

> Velvet, soft fabric and linen are all upholstery-grade and wear well; for the heaviest daily use, soft fabric is the pick.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Velvet, soft fabric or linen: which is the most durable?

**The workshop's answer:** All the fabrics hold up well. Velvet, soft fabric and linen are equally durable, so there is no tougher option to push you toward; choose the color and texture you like best.

**A common question:** I need something very durable and easy to clean for heavy use. Which fabric?

**The workshop's answer:** Soft fabric: very durable, soft to the touch and easy to clean. Between linen and velvet, velvet is the more durable choice.

**A common question:** Which beige is the most hard-wearing for a rental property?

**The workshop's answer:** Linen, velvet or soft fabric, which the workshop calls performance fabrics. One buyer furnishing a rental chose linen because durability mattered more than the velvet look.

**A common question:** Is the fabric thick enough for upholstery, and does velvet resist water?

**The workshop's answer:** Every fabric used is upholstery-grade and built to last; velvet 112 is one of the best sellers. Velvet is an indoor fabric with no water-resistant properties, so choose the outdoor range for wet areas.

**A common question:** Do you have a Martindale or double-rub number for your fabrics?

**The workshop's answer:** No lab rub count is available; there are no Martindale or Wyzenbeek certificates. The fabrics are hard-wearing upholstery grades for daily use, and the outdoor fabrics are the toughest.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is a 100% cotton stripe a good choice for a heavily used bench?

It is the least hard-wearing fabric in the range. For a bench used hard every day, soft fabric, velvet or linen will serve better; keep the cotton stripes for lighter-use spots where their look matters most.

### Can velvet cushions go on a porch or patio?

Velvet is indoor-only and has no water-resistant properties, so it is the wrong choice where cushions may get damp. The outdoor range is the toughest fabric family and the one to use on porches and patios.

### Does the hardest-wearing fabric have to feel rough?

Not with soft fabric. The workshop recommends it for very heavy use precisely because it is durable, soft to the touch and easy to clean at the same time, so you do not trade comfort for toughness.
