# What measurements do you need for an L-shaped bench with back cushions?

*Two runs, one corner and a sketch that says which number belongs where. Get those right and the quote follows.*

Also asked as: One-piece L-shaped cushion and a 2-piece backrest?; L-shape bench cushion: outside L, inside L?

> **The quick answer:** For an L-shaped bench cushion, send the end-to-end length of each leg of the L, the seat depth and thickness, and a sketch or photo, and say if any part is angled and if you want backrests. Outside and inside L dimensions work too; the workshop plans the two-piece split and confirms it before quoting.

## Key facts

- Send the end-to-end length of each leg of the L.
- Outside and inside L dimensions are enough to plan the two pieces.
- An L-shaped bench cushion is made as two cushions that meet at the corner.
- Say if any part is angled and if you need backrests.
- Backrests can run along one side only, such as a foam wedge on the longer run.
- Standard thickness is 4 in (10 cm) and can be changed.
- The workshop confirms the units and the L layout before quoting.

## Three ways to measure an L-shaped bench cushion

| Method | What you measure | Real example |
|---|---|---|
| Leg by leg | Each run end to end, plus its depth | 84 x 22 in (213 x 56 cm) and 62.5 x 21.5 in (159 x 55 cm) |
| Outside and inside L | The outer edges and the inner edges of the L | Outside 90 x 55 in (229 x 140 cm), inside 72.75 x 39 in (185 x 99 cm) |
| Piece by piece | Each cushion's length and depth, as you want them cut | 82 x 18 in (208 x 46 cm) and 29.25 x 18 in (74 x 46 cm) for a banquette |

Any of the three works. The split into two pieces is confirmed with you before the quote.

## What the sketch has to answer

- ✓ **Each leg, end to end**, corner included. The workshop plans the split and confirms it.
- ✓ **Depth of each leg.** They can differ: 22 in on one run, 21.5 in on the other.
- ✓ **Thickness.** 4 in (10 cm) is standard; say so if you want more.
- ✓ **Any angled part**, marked where it starts.
- ✓ **Backrests: yes or no, and on which run.**
- ✓ **A photo of the nook** and a picture of the backrest style you like.
- ✓ **Units.** Write in or cm on the sketch, once.

## Backrests on one run, or both

Backs don't have to follow the whole L. A buyer in the US with an 84 x 22 in and 62.5 x 21.5 in corner bench in sage corduroy had it quoted both bare and with a foam wedge backrest along the 84 in side only. Another buyer's L-shaped lounge bed used one 24 x 73 in (60 x 186 cm) and two 24 x 75 in (60 x 190 cm) seat cushions, 3 in (8 cm) thick, with four wedge backrests.

Flat cushions without buttons are fine too, partner. The [L-shaped measuring Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/l-shaped-bench-cushion-measurements/) covers the tape, [which piece owns the corner](https://cushionguide.com/guides/l-shaped-cushion-corner-joint/) covers the joint, and [wedge cushions](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#wedge-cushion) explains the back shape. Which run of your L gets the backrest?

> **Tailor's margin:** Measure each leg of an L-shaped bench end to end, corner included, and write in or cm on the sketch; the workshop checks both before quoting.

> An L-shaped bench cushion is made as two pieces that meet at the corner, so the sketch needs both runs measured end to end, plus the depth of each.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Can you make a one-piece L-shaped seat cushion and backrests for a dining nook?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, L-shaped seat and back cushions are made regularly. Send a sketch with both runs of the L measured corner to corner, note whether any part is angled, and add a photo of the nook and a picture of the backrest style you like.

**A common question:** Is an L-shaped bench cushion one piece or two?

**The workshop's answer:** Two cushions that meet at the corner for a close fit. Send the outside and inside dimensions, such as outside 90 x 55 in and inside 72.75 x 39 in, or each piece's length and depth, and the split is confirmed with you.

**A common question:** Can I have a back cushion on only one side of my L-shaped bench?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. A bench of 84 x 22 in and 62.5 x 21.5 in in sage corduroy was quoted without a backrest and with a foam wedge backrest along the 84 in side. Standard thickness is 4 in and can be changed.

**A common question:** Can you make L-shaped cushions in my own sizes?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. For benches the workshop suggests making the L in two pieces and asks for the bench width. The same approach has covered L-shaped backrests of 55 x 39 in (140 x 100 cm) with matching corduroy mattress covers.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can an L-shaped cushion fit around a pillar in the corner?

Yes, in one of two ways: one L-shaped piece with a precise notch, or separate sections that butt up around the pillar. Send a photo plus the pillar's position and size so the split can be drawn.

### Do both legs of the L need the same depth?

No. One real bench measured 22 in (56 cm) deep on one run and 21.5 in (55 cm) on the other, so give each leg its own depth instead of assuming they match.

### Do L-shaped bench cushions have to be tufted?

No. Flat cushions without buttons are available for L-shaped benches. The standard thickness is 4 in (10 cm), and a different thickness can be asked for when you request the quote.
