# Can you match a cushion to my existing couch or chairs, even from another brand?

*Two fabrics can share a color name and still disagree by four in the afternoon. The honest promise is close; here is how to make close work.*

Also asked as: can I send pictures of my couch to match; closest cream linen to my chairs

> **The quick answer:** A new cushion can be matched closely to your existing couch or chairs, but an exact match cannot be guaranteed. Send daylight photos and the workshop suggests the nearest chart fabrics; you make the final choice. For a real check, order swatches, up to 5 codes per sample order, and hold them against the piece at home. Replacing every cover avoids a mismatch entirely.

The wide wale catches light from the garden window and looks almost velvety.")

## Key facts

- The workshop suggests the closest chart fabrics from your daylight photos.
- The final color decision stays with you.
- An exact tone match from photos, or with another seller's fabric, is not guaranteed.
- Swatches are the most reliable check: up to 5 codes per sample order.
- When your other piece arrives, send a photo and the workshop confirms the match.
- Replacing all the covers is the sure way to avoid a mismatch.
- A warm cream linen with same-fabric piping is the most forgiving base.
- Swatches are roughly palm-sized, about 4 x 4 to 6 x 6 in (10 x 10 to 15 x 15 cm), and come with exactly the codes you order.
- Dye batches can differ slightly, so even the same code ordered separately may not match exactly.

## Before you ask for a match

- ✓ **Photograph the piece in daylight**, by a window, not under lamps. The nearest chart fabrics are picked from those photos.
- ✓ **Name the fabric family.** Corduroy is matched against corduroy, like the green corduroy offered for a green corduroy ottoman.
- ✓ **Order swatches**, up to 5 codes per sample order, and hold them against the piece at home.
- ✓ **Make the final call yourself.** Only you see the couch in person.
- ✓ **Send a photo when your other piece arrives**, and the match gets confirmed.

## What nobody can promise you

- ✗ An exact tone match from photos alone.
- ✗ A match to another seller's or brand's fabric.
- ✗ A match to a paint color or CMYK code.
- ✗ A navy judged from a phone photo, which rarely captures navy.

## Why close is the honest word

Dye lots drift, screens flatter, and corduroy, velvet and linen each hold a color differently. For a breakfast-nook bench beside cream dining chairs, the workshop pointed to its warm cream linen, a forgiving base, with piping in the same fabric: the safest, cleanest line.

Let one color speak and the others listen. If a [backrest cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/backrest-cushions/) must sit on a sofa bought elsewhere and the sizes are similar, the surest match is new covers for everything. What is your piece made of: corduroy, velvet or linen?

> **Tailor's margin:** If a new backrest must match a sofa bought elsewhere and the sizes are similar, replace every cover. Matching covers are the only exact match.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Which cream linen would best match my dining chairs for a breakfast nook bench?

**The workshop's answer:** From a photo of the chairs, the workshop suggested its warm cream linen while saying an exact tone match is nearly impossible. That cream works with almost any piping, and same-fabric piping is the safest choice.

**A common question:** Can you match corduroy furniture I bought from another seller?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop can suggest its closest shade, such as its green corduroy, but can't guarantee a match with another seller's fabric. It offers its full color card so you can choose another color or order samples.

**A common question:** Will extra backrest pieces match the sofa I bought elsewhere?

**The workshop's answer:** Close, if you choose the nearest color, though not guaranteed. Send a photo when your other piece arrives and the workshop will confirm; if the sizes are similar, replacing all the covers makes everything match.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why does one color name look different in corduroy and in linen?

Each fabric reflects light its own way. Corduroy's ribs catch light and shadow, velvet's pile shifts with the direction it lies, and linen sits flat and matte, so one color name reads slightly differently in each.

### Can a cushion be matched to my wall paint instead of a fabric?

Not exactly. No match to a paint color, a CMYK value or another brand's fabric can be guaranteed. The workshop names its closest codes, sends close-ups and recommends samples to compare at home.

### What piping is safest when matching older furniture?

Piping in the cushion's own fabric. When the main color is a close match rather than an exact one, a contrasting welt draws the eye to the edge; same-fabric piping keeps the line quiet and clean.
