# Can you make marine-grade outdoor cushions with sealed seams and a mesh bottom?

*Short version: not as standard. Standard outdoor covers are stitched, zipped and washable. The heavier build exists, but it has to be asked for by name.*

Also asked as: Can you do 100% waterproof marine-grade fabric?; Mesh strips on the undersides for drainage?

> **The quick answer:** Sealed seams and a mesh bottom are not part of standard outdoor cushion production. Regular outdoor covers use normal stitching and full zippers so they come off and wash, and the weather protection comes from the water-repellent outdoor fabric. For large premium projects the workshop has built with a breathable mesh drainage base, UV-resistant thread, a concealed zipper, double welt and 32-density medium-firm foam.

## Key facts

- Standard outdoor covers have regular stitching and full zippers, removable and washable.
- Sealed seams and mesh breather strips are not part of standard production.
- The water-repellent outdoor fabric chart includes cream, beige, taupe and oatmeal neutrals.
- A premium build has used 32-density medium-firm foam, about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), UV-resistant thread, a mesh base, a concealed zipper and double welt.
- Large projects get a production drawing to approve before cutting; production time is quoted per project.
- Button-tufted backs are confirmed case by case from dimensions and a photo.

## Standard outdoor cover vs. the premium project build

| Detail | Standard outdoor cover | Premium project build |
|---|---|---|
| Seams | Regular stitching; not sealed | Double welt in matching fabric; not sold as sealed |
| Underside | No mesh strips | Breathable mesh base for drainage |
| Closure | Full zipper; cover comes off to wash | Concealed heavy-duty zipper; cover comes off |
| Thread | Standard thread | UV-resistant thread |
| Foam | As chosen on the order | 32-density medium-firm, about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) |
| Before cutting | Made as ordered | Production drawing sent for approval |

## Why the standard cover is stitched, not sealed

Standard outdoor covers are sewn with regular stitching and closed with a full zipper. The cover comes off, goes in the wash, goes back on. The weather work is done by the fabric: a water-repellent outdoor chart with neutrals like cream, beige, taupe and oatmeal. It sheds a shower; it isn't sold as waterproof.

Sealed seams and mesh breather strips are not part of normal production. Better you hear that now than after a wet week, friend. Rain doesn't negotiate.

Quick-dry foam is the same story. On the premium job below, the foam was 32-density medium-firm, not the 2.2-2.5 lb/ft³ (35-40 kg/m³) quick-dry block first asked for. If drainage foam matters, name it and get it on the drawing. [Dry-fast foam](https://cushionguide.com/guides/dry-fast-foam-outdoor-cushions/) covers when to insist.

Where will your cushions spend a wet night: under a roof, or out in the open?

## A concrete daybed, specified for the worst day

A buyer wrote to the workshop about a large built-in concrete daybed. The quote covered two seat cushions, each about 58¾ × 99⅜ in (149 × 252 cm) and 6 in (15 cm) thick, plus two round head cushions.

The spec read like a sail order: 32-density medium-firm foam, a premium outdoor fabric, UV-resistant thread, a breathable mesh base for drainage, a concealed heavy-duty zipper, double welt in matching fabric and removable covers. A production drawing went out for approval before any cutting, and production on that job was quoted at about 10-14 days.

That is the heavier build. It exists. It just isn't the default.

> **Tailor's margin:** Standard outdoor cushions have regular stitching and full zippers. A mesh drainage base and UV thread are a premium build: ask by name.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Can you make fully waterproof marine-grade covers with sealed seams and mesh vents for a very wet climate?

**The workshop's answer:** There is a water-repellent outdoor fabric chart with cream, beige, taupe and oatmeal neutrals, but sealed seams and mesh breather strips aren't part of production. Covers have standard stitching and full zippers, removable and washable. Button-tufted backs are confirmed case by case from dimensions and a photo.

**A common question:** Can a tufted cushion live outside?

**The workshop's answer:** It can be made in outdoor fabric, but tufting lets water inside even so. Where cushions get wet, by a pool or a fire pit, choose a plain, foam-filled outdoor cushion.

**A common question:** Can you make new covers for the outdoor inserts I already have?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Zippered outdoor covers are made to fit from photos and a drawing with every measurement, with no need to send the cushions.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does a mesh base let rain drain out of an outdoor cushion?

That is its purpose: a breathable mesh base gives water that gets inside a way out at the bottom. Here it came with a premium project build, not on standard covers, so request it in writing.

### Is 32-density foam the same thing as quick-dry foam?

Not necessarily. Density describes weight, about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), and on the premium daybed it was specified as medium-firm. Quick-dry foam is an open structure made to drain fast, so get the foam type named on the drawing.

### Which neutral colors come in the water-repellent outdoor fabric?

The water-repellent outdoor chart carries cream, beige, taupe and oatmeal among its neutrals. Ask for close-up photos of the codes you are weighing, since outdoor weaves read differently in full sun than on a phone.
