# Should my L-shaped bench cushion be one piece or two?

*Short answer from the drawing board: two. Longer answer: two, unless your L is small and you're ready to sign off every edge of a template.*

Also asked as: Do you make L-shaped bench cushions?; Can you make it one individual piece?

> **The quick answer:** Order an L-shaped bench cushion as two or more pieces that meet flush at the corner. Separate pieces fit more cleanly, ship more safely and are easier to unzip and wash. A one-piece L costs considerably more and leaves a much smaller margin for error. A small L can still be one piece, cut from a lettered template you confirm edge by edge.

## Key facts

- L-shaped bench cushions are usually made as two or more pieces meeting flush at the corner.
- Split pieces fit more cleanly and ship more safely.
- Separate covers are easier to unzip, wash and keep snug.
- A one-piece L costs considerably more and carries a much higher margin for error.
- A common layout: a square corner cushion plus a long cushion on each arm.
- A small L can be one piece, cut from a lettered template you confirm.
- Each piece is ordered separately at its exact drawn size and produced together.

## Two-piece vs one-piece L-shaped bench cushion

| | Two or more pieces | One-piece L |
|---|---|---|
| Fit | Cleaner; pieces meet flush | Harder to keep snug |
| Cover off for washing | Easy, one piece at a time | Hard to take off and put back |
| Shipping | Much safer | Less safe |
| Cost | Lower | Considerably more |
| Margin for error | Lower risk | Much higher |
| Best for | Most corner benches and banquettes | Small L shapes |

## The corner layout I'd draw for you

The common split is three pieces: a square corner cushion and a long cushion on each arm. One real set measured 20.75 x 65 1/8 in (52.7 x 165.4 cm), 20.75 x 20.75 in (52.7 x 52.7 cm) and 20.75 x 65 in (52.7 x 165.1 cm). An L, after all, is two rectangles that agreed to meet.

Two pieces work too. Each is ordered separately at its exact drawn size, say 17 3/4 x 59 in (45 x 150 cm) and 17 3/4 x 35 1/2 in (45 x 90 cm), and both are produced together. Where two long cushions overlap in the corner, each can carry its own backrest. The [L-shaped bench cushion measurements](https://cushionguide.com/guides/l-shaped-bench-cushion-measurements/) and [corner joint](https://cushionguide.com/guides/l-shaped-cushion-corner-joint/) Patterns show which piece runs through.

## When one piece still earns its keep

A small L can be one piece. You send a sketch, the workshop turns it into a lettered template, and you confirm every edge and the thickness before any foam is cut. An earlier banquette of 18 x 70 in (46 x 178 cm) plus 18 x 42 in (46 x 107 cm), 2 in (5 cm) thick, was made as one piece. It can be done. It just costs more and forgives less.

Send a photo and a sketch with every edge measured, partner, and say whether you want back cushions. What are your two arm lengths? Try them in the [bench cushion builder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/bench-cushion-builder/), or browse [banquette cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/banquette-cushions/).

> **Tailor's margin:** An L-shaped bench cushion in two pieces unzips and washes one piece at a time; a one-piece L cover is hard to take off and put back.

> For an L-shaped bench cushion, a square corner piece plus one long cushion per arm fits cleaner and ships safer than a single L.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Could you make a single L-shaped cushion for my corner kitchen bench?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop normally makes L-shapes as two or more cushions meeting at the corner, which fits more cleanly and ships much more safely. A common layout is a square corner cushion with a long cushion on each arm. For a small L, one piece can be considered from a lettered template you confirm.

**A common question:** For an L-shaped bench, is one cushion or two better?

**The workshop's answer:** Two separate seat cushions. A one-piece L cover is hard to take off, put back and keep snug; separate pieces are easier to handle and remove for washing.

**A common question:** Is a one-piece L cushion worth it for my banquette?

**The workshop's answer:** It's technically possible but not recommended: it costs considerably more and the margin for error is much higher. A photo of the bench helps before deciding.

**A common question:** My L-bench is 63 x 72 in with a 20 in depth. What should I send?

**The workshop's answer:** A sketch of the layout with those measurements, 63 x 72 in (160 x 183 cm) at 20 in (51 cm) deep, and whether you need back cushions too. Two pieces are usual, but the workshop can make it your way.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Which piece runs through the corner of an L bench?

Two layouts appear in real orders. A square corner piece can sit between two arm cushions, or one long cushion can run into the corner with the shorter one butting against it. Draw yours and mark every length.

### Should I order all the pieces of an L at the same time?

Yes. Each piece is ordered separately at its own drawn size, but they are produced together. Place them in one go with the same fabric code so they come off the table side by side.

### Can an L-shaped banquette have back cushions too?

Yes. Say so when you send your sketch. Where two long seat cushions overlap in the corner, each can have its own backrest, so the back line follows the seat pieces.
