# Is your foam firm enough that it won't sag or flatten with daily use?

*Sag is a materials question with a number attached. The number here is 32, partner, and it doesn't change with the price tag.*

Also asked as: Is your foam high density? I don't want a saggy cushion; Is the foam durable for a couch?

> **The quick answer:** Yes: the standard foam is about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-density, high-resilience foam with a medium-hard feel, and it keeps its shape for years without sagging or flattening. The workshop uses the same foam in its couches, its main line, so there is no firmer upgrade to buy. A polyester fiber wrap softens the surface, and 3 in (7.6 cm) is the best-selling bench thickness.

## Key facts

- Standard foam is about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³, sold as 32 DNS) high-density foam.
- It is high-resilience foam with a medium-hard feel.
- It keeps its shape for years without sagging or flattening.
- The same foam goes into all seating, including the workshop's couches.
- There is no paid firmness upgrade, because none is needed.
- The foam is wrapped in a polyester fiber (Dacron) layer.
- 3 in (7.6 cm) is the best-selling bench cushion thickness.

## What the 32 buys you, line by line

| Spec | Value | What it means on the seat |
|---|---|---|
| Density | about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) | Above the usual 1.8 lb/ft³ high-density line |
| Type | High-resilience (HR) foam | Recovers its shape after you stand up |
| Feel | Medium-hard | Adults don't sink through |
| Wrap | Polyester fiber (Dacron) | Softer surface, no added sag |
| Used in | Every seat, couches included | One foam across the line; no upgrade tier |
| Bench thickness | 3 in (7.6 cm) best seller | 4 in (10 cm) is the other common pick |

## Why there's no firmer foam to upgrade to

Couches are the workshop's main line. A couch seat works harder than most benches: daily sitting, flopping, the occasional nap. The same 32-density [high-resilience foam](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#high-resilience-foam) goes into those couches and has held up in them for years across thousands of orders.

So a bench cushion gets couch foam by default. An upgrade tier would be selling you the foam you already have. The [density conversion Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/foam-density-lb-ft3-kg-m3/) shows the kg/m³ to lb/ft³ math if you want to check the 2.0.

## 3 in or 4 in on a bench?

3 in (7.6 cm) is the best seller for [bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/). Thickness changes height more than firmness: the foam is the same medium-hard either way, and every extra inch of foam raises the seat.

The [Dacron wrap](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#dacron-wrap) rounds the top without softening the support. What does your bench measure from floor to seat? Run that number through the [seat height calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/seat-height-calculator/), then check the feel in the [foam firmness finder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/foam-firmness-finder/).

> **Tailor's margin:** Firm cushion foam that won't sag starts at density: about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), above the 1.8 lb/ft³ line most people call high density.

> The foam in a bench cushion and the foam in a couch can be the same: 32-density HR foam, medium-hard, with no firmer tier to pay for.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Will your foam hold up on a couch, or do you have something stronger?

**The workshop's answer:** The shop uses 32-density foam, which suits every kind of seating, couches included. Couches are the workshop's main line, and this same foam has held up in them for years across thousands of orders.

**A common question:** Is the foam high density? I really don't want a saggy cushion.

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The standard foam is about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³, 32 DNS) high-density, long-life foam that is genuinely firm, holds its shape and doesn't sag with daily use, so there's no need to pay extra for sturdiness. It's wrapped in a polyester fiber (Dacron) layer for a fuller, softer finish.

**A common question:** How firm are the cushions, and should I pick 3 or 4 inches?

**The workshop's answer:** Every seat cushion uses 32-density high-resilience foam, about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), with a medium-hard feel: supportive, comfortable, and it keeps its shape for years without sagging or flattening. The 3-inch option is the best seller.

**A common question:** What's that density in lb/ft³, and what's the ILD?

**The workshop's answer:** 32 kg/m³ is about 2.0 lb/ft³, above the usual 1.8 lb high-density threshold. It's HR cold foam at roughly ILD 42, firm enough that adults don't sink through, though no official ILD certificate is issued.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does the polyester fiber wrap make the cushion go soft over time?

No. The wrap softens the surface feel, not the support. The 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) HR core does the holding, so the cushion stays full rather than saggy, and the fiber layer gives the cover a rounder, fuller finish.

### Is couch-grade foam overkill for a bench?

It isn't a heavier grade, just the same foam. The workshop puts 32-density HR foam in every seat, from couches to benches, so a bench cushion gets the support that has held up in couches for years, with no upgrade fee.

### Do tufted cushions use the same 32-density foam?

No. Tufted cushions are filled with 'silicone ball' fiber: polyester hollow-fiber clusters packed densely, often mixed with some cotton, with no foam core. The 32-density foam is for seat cushions such as bench pads.
