# Is foam density the same as firmness, and can I choose how firm my cushion is?

*Density tells you how long the foam lasts. Firmness tells you how it feels when you sit. Mix them up and you order the wrong one.*

Also asked as: Is density connected to firmness?; Medium firmness, but high density?

> **The quick answer:** No, foam density is not the same as firmness: density is the foam's quality and weight, which drives durability, while firmness is how the foam feels. High-density foam can be medium-firm or firm. Standard sofa seats are described as medium-hard, and a small piece of foam can ship with your fabric samples so you can feel it first.

## Key facts

- Density measures durability; firmness measures feel.
- High-density foam is available in a medium firmness.
- Firm high-density foam is available for very supportive seating.
- Standard sofa firmness is described as medium-hard.
- Bench and seat cushions use 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-density foam, medium-firm.
- A small foam sample can be sent with fabric samples.
- Latex foam is possible on some models at about double the price.

## What do foam density and firmness each measure?

- ✓ **Density = durability.** It is the foam's quality and weight, and it decides how long the cushion keeps its shape.
- ✓ **Firmness = feel.** It is how hard the seat pushes back when you sit down.
- ✓ **Both can be chosen.** High-density foam comes in a medium firmness, or firm for very supportive seating.
- ✓ **Know the baseline.** Bench and seat cushions use 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-density foam, medium-firm; standard sofa seats are described as medium-hard.
- ✓ **Feel it first.** Ask for a small piece of foam to travel with your fabric samples.
- ✓ **Latex is an option on some models,** at about double the price.

## Mix-ups that cost a comfortable seat

- ✗ Asking for "softer foam" and expecting it to last longer. Softness and durability are separate choices.
- ✗ Assuming high density means hard. High-density foam is made in a medium firmness too.
- ✗ Picking firmness from a product photo. A foam sample in your hand settles it.

## Why an engineer keeps them apart

I spent ten years on car seats, and nobody there confused how long a seat lasts with how it feels. [Foam density](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#foam-density) is weight per volume: pounds per cubic foot in the US, kilograms per cubic meter elsewhere. Firmness is a separate property, measured in the trade as [ILD](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#ild). A 2.0 lb/ft³ foam can be medium or firm.

So order in two lines, partner: density for how long, firmness for how it feels. The [foam density conversion table](https://cushionguide.com/guides/foam-density-lb-ft3-kg-m3/) and [what ILD really measures](https://cushionguide.com/guides/foam-density-vs-firmness-ild/) go deeper, and the [foam firmness finder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/foam-firmness-finder/) narrows the choice. For backs, see the [backrest cushions atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/backrest-cushions/). How do you sit: upright at a table, or curled up with a book?

> **Tailor's margin:** Foam density tells you how long a cushion lasts; firmness tells you how it feels. High-density foam comes medium-firm or firm.

> Ask for a small piece of foam with your fabric samples: a 2.0 lb/ft³ seat foam in your hand tells you more about firmness than any description.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Is foam density the same as firmness? Can I get high-density foam that's only medium firm?

**The workshop's answer:** They're different: density is the foam's quality and weight, which drives durability, while firmness is how it feels. High-density foam can be supplied in a medium firmness.

**A common question:** How firm are the seats, and can I test the foam before ordering?

**The workshop's answer:** The sofas are comfortable and medium-firm. Buyers who want firm, supportive seating get high-density firm foam. Fabric samples can include a small piece of foam so you can feel it, and latex foam is possible on some models at about double the price.

**A common question:** What density foam goes into your bench cushions?

**The workshop's answer:** Bench and seat cushions use 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-density, high-resilience polyurethane foam. It's medium-firm and keeps its shape for years without lumps.

**A common question:** Some cushions still feel flat or softer than others after unboxing. What should I do?

**The workshop's answer:** Wait: compressed foam can take up to a week to fully expand. Take off the cover, shake and stretch the foam. If a piece is still flat after several days, send photos for replacement foam or filling.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does higher-density foam always feel harder?

Not necessarily. Density is about the foam's quality and weight, so it drives how long the cushion lasts. The same high-density foam is offered medium-firm or firm, so you can have a durable cushion that still feels medium.

### Can the back cushion be thinner than the seat?

Yes. Give each cushion's thickness in the personalization note, for example a 4 in (10 cm) seat with a 2 or 3 in back. Keep foam backrests at 2 in (5 cm) or more; thinner foam flattens against the back.

### Is latex foam available instead of polyurethane?

On some models, yes, at about double the price. Ask for it in your message along with the cushion size and fabric, and the workshop will confirm whether your cushion type can be made with latex.
