# Can the floor sofa cushions work as a bed for overnight guests?

*Yes, with one line on the order. A seat cushion and a sleeping cushion are set differently, and the workshop needs to know which one you want.*

Also asked as: Good for sleeping and not too squishy?; Can we use them for overnight guests?

> **The quick answer:** Yes, foam sofa cushions can be slept on: the floor and modular sofa seat mattresses are high-density foam that is comfortable without being squishy, so laid flat they make a good guest bed. For a daybed or cot used as a spare bed, the cushion can be made thicker and softer than a normal seat cushion. Say it will be slept on when you order.

## Key facts

- Floor and modular sofa seat mattresses use high-density comfort foam.
- Laid flat, the floor sofa works as a guest bed.
- Daybed and cot cushions can be made thicker and softer for sleeping.
- A sleeping cushion is softer than a normal seat cushion.
- Tell the workshop the cushion will be slept on so thickness and firmness are set for it.

## Seat foam and sleep foam are two different specs

A seat cushion has one job: hold you up while you sit. The floor sofa's seat mattresses do that with high-density foam that is comfortable without being squishy. Lay them flat side by side and they make a good guest bed for overnight visitors.

A cot or daybed that doubles as a spare bed is a different spec. There the workshop cuts the cushion thicker and sets it noticeably softer than a seat cushion, so a guest can sleep on it for a few nights. The variable you control, partner, is the note: write that the cushion will be slept on, and the thickness and firmness are set for it.

For the numbers behind the foam, see [foam density in lb/ft³ and kg/m³](https://cushionguide.com/guides/foam-density-lb-ft3-kg-m3/) and the [floor sofa bed size and firmness](https://cushionguide.com/guides/floor-sofa-bed-size-firmness/) Pattern. ## Sofa seat foam vs. a sleeping cushion

| | Floor sofa seat mattress | Daybed or cot sleeping cushion |
|---|---|---|
| Foam | High-density comfort foam | Cut and set for sleeping |
| Feel | Comfortable, not squishy | Noticeably softer than a seat cushion |
| Thickness | Standard seat cushion | Can be made thicker |
| How you ask | Nothing extra: lay the cushions flat | Write that it will be slept on |

## A narrow cot for a few nights

A buyer in the US had a 70 x 21 in (178 x 53 cm) cot frame that would serve as a guest bed, and asked about paying extra for memory foam. The workshop's answer was a spec change rather than a new material: a thicker cushion, made really soft, softer than a normal seat cushion. That solved the problem the buyer actually had, which was a few comfortable nights on a narrow frame.

> **Tailor's margin:** For a daybed or cot cushion guests will sleep on, write 'for sleeping' in the order note, and it's cut thicker and softer than a seat cushion.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Are the sofa mattresses firm enough for overnight guests to sleep on?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The seat mattresses are a high-quality, high-density foam that is comfortable, so they make a good guest bed when laid flat.

**A common question:** Can a cot or daybed cushion be made soft enough to sleep on for a few nights?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. For a 70 x 21 in (178 x 53 cm) cot frame used as a guest bed, the workshop confirmed it can make the cushion thick and really soft, softer than a normal seat cushion.

**A common question:** What's the foam density in lb/ft³, and what's the ILD?

**The workshop's answer:** 32 kg/m³ foam is about 2.0 lb/ft³, above the usual 1.8 lb high-density threshold. It is HR cold foam at roughly ILD 42, firm enough that adults don't sink through; no official ILD certificate is issued.

**A common question:** Will new foam smell when the cushions arrive?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop says its foam has no odor, with one smell complaint in about 3,000 sofa orders. If it does smell, wash the covers and air the foam for several days; persistent cases got replacement foam.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does the floor sofa fold out like a sofa bed?

No. Take off the loose backrests and lay the seat cushions flat side by side. That flat layout is the bed, and the high-density foam is comfortable enough for overnight guests.

### Is a sleeping cushion firmer or softer than a seat cushion?

Softer. When a daybed or cot cushion will be slept on, the workshop makes it thicker and noticeably softer than a normal seat cushion, so it stays comfortable for a few nights.

### Do I need memory foam for a guest daybed?

Not necessarily. When one buyer asked about paying extra for memory foam on a guest cot, the workshop answered with a thicker, softer foam cushion made for sleeping. Mention the sleeping use and let the thickness do the work.
