# What size floor cushion or floor sofa should I get?

*Pick by what you'll do on it, then check it against the wall. Four uses, four starting sizes, no math degree required.*

Also asked as: Not very good at math, help me select a size.; What size to comfortably lay down?

> **The quick answer:** Size a floor cushion by use: about 28 x 40 in (71 x 102 cm) for meditation, 40 x 80 in (102 x 203 cm) for an adult lying down, 24 or 27 x 70 in for a sleepover bed, and 28 x 56 in to match the listing photos. Measure your wall first, because every size can be customized to your space.

## Key facts

- Floor cushion and floor sofa sizes can be customized to your space.
- 28 x 40 in (71 x 102 cm) is the suggested meditation seat.
- About 40 x 80 in (102 x 203 cm) lets an adult lie down.
- 24 x 70 or 27 x 70 in (61 or 69 x 178 cm) suits a sleepover bed.
- The main listing floor sofa is 28 x 64 in (70 x 160 cm); the couch in the video is 28 x 60 in (71 x 152 cm).
- Returning a bulky piece is expensive, so measure before you order.

## Starting sizes by what you'll do on it

| Use | Inches | Centimeters |
|---|---|---|
| Meditation seat | 28 x 40 | 71 x 102 |
| Adult lying down | about 40 x 80 | 102 x 203 |
| Sleepover bed | 24 x 70 or 27 x 70 | 61 x 178 or 69 x 178 |
| Match the listing photos | 28 x 56 | 71 x 142 |
| Main listing floor sofa | 28 x 64 | 70 x 160 |
| Couch in the video | 28 x 60 | 71 x 152 |

## Read the first number as depth

The first number is the width, which on a floor seat means depth front to back. The second is the length along the wall. A 28 x 64 in sofa is 28 in deep and 64 in long, and the size describes the cushion, not the floor around it. The [length, depth and thickness pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-measurements-length-depth-thickness/) spells it out.

Depth is the number buyers wrestle with; one furnishing a kids' sofa chose a shallower 23.5 in (60 cm). For sitting still, see the [zabuton and meditation cushion sizes](https://cushionguide.com/guides/zabuton-meditation-floor-cushion-size/).

## Measure before you pick a row

1. **Tape the wall**: Measure the wall the cushion will sit against, end to end, in inches.
2. **Send the space**: Send a photo of the room or your wall measurements, and the workshop will help you choose.
3. **Order your numbers**: Sizes are custom, so order the size that fits, not the nearest one that almost does. How long is your wall, partner?

> **Tailor's margin:** Size a floor cushion by use: 28 x 40 in for a meditation seat, about 40 x 80 in for an adult to lie down on.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** I'm not sure what size to order. Can you help me pick?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send a photo of the space or your wall measurements and you'll get a suggestion. By use: 28 x 40 in for meditation, about 40 x 80 in for an adult lying down, 24 x 70 or 27 x 70 in for a sleepover bed, 28 x 56 in to match the photos.

**A common question:** What size is the floor sofa in the photos, and what seat depth works best?

**The workshop's answer:** The main listing sofa is 28 x 64 in (70 x 160 cm), and the couch in the video is 28 x 60 in. Another photo shows a 23.5 in (60 cm) seat depth; one buyer chose 23½ x 55 in (60 x 140 cm) for a kids' sofa.

**A common question:** How do I avoid a costly return if the sofa might not fit our space?

**The workshop's answer:** Measure the space first and send the measurements; the sizes can be customized so no return is needed. Shipping a bulky order back can be very expensive.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Should I take an inch off so the cushion fits the space?

No. Send the exact size of the space and don't deduct anything. The cushion is made to your numbers, the fitting allowance is handled in production, and piping sits on the seams without changing the size.

### What bed size does the floor sofa make when laid flat?

Each floor sofa seat mattress is 39 x 79 in (99 x 201 cm), close to twin XL, so twin XL sheets fit. Two side by side make about 79 x 79 in; with the ottoman, about 79 x 119 in.

### How thick should a floor cushion be for a given seat height?

Seat height is what sits underneath plus the cushion thickness: a 15 in bench with a 3 in cushion sits at 18 in. On a bare floor, the cushion thickness is the whole seat height, so choose it deliberately.
