# Can I wash the white non-slip bottom on the floor sofa?

*The colored cover is the part the eye sees; the plain white layer beneath it is the part that keeps you in place. They take different care.*

Also asked as: How do I clean the bottom non-slip fabric?; Are the covers for the armrests washable?

> **The quick answer:** No, the white non-slip bottom of a floor sofa must never go in the washing machine. Unzip and remove it first, then machine wash only the colored covers, armrest covers included, at 86°F (30°C) or below. Wipe the non-slip piece clean by hand, even with pets at home. A little white dust from it at first is expected to stop over time.

## Why the plain white layer gets different care

Turn a floor sofa cushion over and the palette changes. Above sits the color you chose, a rust velvet or a forest green bouclé like the one by the hidden zipper in the photograph. Below, plain white. The eye sits down first, on the color; the white layer is there for the body. It is the anti-slip piece, a [non-slip base](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#non-slip-base), and its whole job is to keep the cushions from sliding.

It is not a fabric for the machine, my friends. Unzip it before the covers go in, and wipe it clean by hand. If it sheds a little white dust at first, the workshop expects that to stop over time.

Every [modular floor sofa](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/modular-floor-sofas/) works this way, and the [cover washing Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/how-to-wash-cushion-covers/) covers the rest of wash day. What color sits on top of yours?

## Not every non-slip base is the same

| | Floor sofa white non-slip bottom | Cushion cover with a non-slip base |
|---|---|---|
| Machine wash? | Never; remove it first | Yes, at 86°F (30°C) on a delicate cycle |
| Dryer? | No | No; air dry |
| How it's cleaned | Wiped by hand | Washed with the cover |

> **Tailor's margin:** Unzip a floor sofa's white non-slip bottom before wash day: only the colored covers go in the machine, at 86°F (30°C) or below.

> The white layer under a floor sofa cushion is the anti-slip piece: wipe it by hand, because it must never go in the washing machine.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Is every part of the floor sofa washable, armrests too?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Every cover, armrests included, zips off and can be washed. Remove the white non-slip fabric on the bottom first, because it must not go in the machine; wipe it clean instead, even if you have pets.

**A common question:** How should I wash the floor sofa covers?

**The workshop's answer:** Machine wash the covers at 86°F (30°C) or below. First unzip and remove the white non-slip bottom panel so only the colored cover goes in the machine.

**A common question:** The white fabric under the sofa is shedding dust. Will that stop?

**The workshop's answer:** That white layer is the anti-slip piece that keeps the cushion from sliding. The workshop expects the shedding to stop over time.

**A common question:** Can the covers go in the tumble dryer?

**The workshop's answer:** Air drying is best. If you use a dryer on the fabric covers, choose the low setting, never high heat, and never put non-slip bottom pieces or rubber-backed covers in the dryer.

## Questions buyers ask next

### What does the white fabric under a floor sofa actually do?

It keeps the seat and back cushions from sliding on the floor. That is why it zips off separately from the colored cover and is wiped clean by hand, never machine washed or put in the dryer.

### Is a cushion cover with a non-slip base still machine washable?

Yes, for zippered cushion and bench covers with a non-slip base: they machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a delicate cycle. Skip the dryer and air dry. The floor sofa's separate white panel is different and is only wiped.

### What temperature do floor sofa covers wash at?

86°F (30°C) or below, on a gentle cycle. Every cover, armrests included, zips off for the wash, as long as the white non-slip panel has been removed first and is cleaned by hand.
