# Will the floor sofa's metal bars scratch my hardwood floor?

*They can, if bare metal meets bare wood. The fix is a layer between the two, and you may already own it.*

Also asked as: The metal part is scratching my wood floor; I don't want to scratch the hardwood floors

> **The quick answer:** Yes, bare metal bars can scratch hardwood, so put something between them and the floor: a rug, a small piece of fabric, or felt furniture feet. The bars are 5/8 in (16 mm) thick, and grips from other brands may not fit because bar thickness varies. A fitted protective bar grip was in production for these bars, so ask about it.

## Key facts

- The metal bars are 5/8 in (16 mm) thick.
- Put a rug or a small piece of fabric under the bars.
- Felt feet on the bars protect wooden floors.
- Updated bars were sent to customers whose bars slid.
- A fitted protective bar grip for these bars was in production.
- Other brands' bar grips may not fit, because bar thickness differs between brands.
- Extra anti-slip fabric was offered at cost.
- The bars ship in their own box, about 16 x 16 x 2 in (40 x 40 x 5 cm) and 9 lb (4 kg).
- A standard floor sofa weighs about 55 to 77 lb (25 to 35 kg) in total.

## Bare metal, bare oak, a little movement

Right, then. The [metal support bars](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#metal-support-bars) that hold a floor sofa's backrests are 5/8 in (16 mm) thick, and the cushions lean their weight on them. Set them straight onto oak or maple and every shift of a body becomes a tiny sanding pass.

The workshop's advice is plain: never let the bars sit bare on wood. A rug, a runner or a folded piece of fabric does the job. The [support bars Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/floor-sofa-support-bars-assembly/) covers assembly, and the same care keeps the bars from creeping.

## Floor savers, from easiest to fussiest

- ✓ Set the whole sofa on a rug, so the bars never touch the boards.
- ✓ No rug? Slide a small piece of fabric under each bar.
- ✓ Stick felt furniture feet on the bars.
- ✓ Ask about the fitted bar grip made for these 5/8 in (16 mm) bars.
- ✓ Skip grips sized for another brand: bar thickness differs, so they may not fit.

## The protective dots missing from one floor sofa's bars

A buyer in the US asked whether the bars would scratch the floor and whether the sofa would slide. The answer was that the bars carry small protective dots and the seat cushions have non-slip material underneath. When that sofa arrived, the buyer found neither on their unit. Felt furniture feet went onto the bars, which is exactly what I'd have done. Check your own bars before the sofa goes down, dear, not after.

> **Tailor's margin:** Never let floor sofa metal bars sit bare on hardwood: a rug, a scrap of fabric or felt feet under the 5/8 in bars saves the finish.

> Bar grips from another brand may not fit a floor sofa's metal bars, because bar thickness differs from brand to brand; these bars are 5/8 in thick.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Will the metal frame of the floor sofa scratch my hardwood?

**The workshop's answer:** Bare bars can slide and scratch wood, so put a rug or a small piece of fabric under them. The workshop sent updated bars to affected customers and was making a fitted protective bar grip for them. Grips from other brands may not fit because bar thickness differs.

**A common question:** How thick are the bars? I want to buy anti-slip feet for them.

**The workshop's answer:** 5/8 in (16 mm). The sofa pieces already have anti-slip fabric underneath, and the shop offered to send extra anti-slip fabric at cost.

**A common question:** Is there velcro under the floor sofa to stop the pieces drifting apart?

**The workshop's answer:** No velcro. Each seat cushion has a white non-slip fabric underneath, and the metal bars and heavy cushions keep the pieces from drifting apart, so no connectors are needed.

**A common question:** Can two cushions be tied together so they don't slide apart?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Ties on the corners or meeting edges join stacked cushions, a seat and back laid flat as a bed, or two bench cushions end to end. Ask for ties on every cushion in the order.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Do the floor sofa bars come with protective pads?

The shop has said the bars carry small protective dots, but one buyer found none on their unit. Check yours on arrival, and if the metal is bare, add felt feet or a layer of fabric before it touches wood.

### Can I use a bar grip bought from another store?

Maybe not. Bar thickness differs between brands, so a grip made for another sofa may not fit these 5/8 in (16 mm) bars. Measure the bar first, or ask about the fitted grip the workshop was producing.

### What if the bars keep sliding on a smooth floor?

Write to the workshop with photos. Updated bars were sent to customers whose bars slid, and extra anti-slip fabric was offered at cost. A rug under the whole sofa helps with sliding and scratches at once.
