# How do I put the metal bars on my floor sofa together?

*Silver poles in a box, and no printed sheet. It looks like a puzzle. It is three shapes and one motion.*

Also asked as: How do I put the metal bars together?; No assembly instructions came with the bars

> **The quick answer:** To assemble floor sofa metal bars, twist and push each joint until the small spring dots click into the holes. The U-piece with the black plastic fitting goes on the floor, the other U-shape on top, and the L-shape joins the sides. A stiff joint loosens after a few clicks in and out of the corner piece.

## Key facts

- The bars join by twisting and pushing the pieces together.
- A metal insert inside each tube shaves the joint for a tight hold.
- Small spring dots click into holes to lock each joint.
- The U-piece with the black plastic fitting goes at the bottom, against the floor.
- The L-shape connects the sides.
- On current bars, both ends of each connector are the same size.
- A bar that still won't connect: send a photo or video and ask the workshop what it will do; marks wipe off with a damp cloth.
- The bars are steel tube about 0.6 in (16 mm) in diameter, in a silver/chrome finish.
- The bars ship in a small box of about 16 x 16 x 2 in that weighs about 9 lb.

## Three shapes, three places

| Piece | Where it goes | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| U-piece with the black plastic fitting | Bottom, against the floor | Keeps the frame from sliding |
| The other U-shape | On top | Forms the top of the frame |
| L-shape | Along the sides | Connects the sides of the frame |
| Connector ends | Every joint | Both ends are the same size on current bars |

## One motion, repeated at every metal joint

1. **Twist and push**: Push each piece into the next with a twist. A metal insert inside the tube shaves the joint so it holds tight.
2. **Wait for the dots**: Small spring dots click into the holes. Until they do, the joint is not home.
3. **Ease a stiff joint**: Click that piece in and out of the corner piece a few times. Then fit everything together.
4. **Set it down**: Black-fitted U on the floor, the other U on top, L-shapes along the sides. The cushions arrive already made.

## When the sheet and the bars disagree

Some boxes held an instruction sheet drawn for an older bar, with short and long connector ends. Ignore that detail. On current bars, both ends of each connector are the same size.

The workshop sends a short setup video instead of printed steps. If a bar still won't connect after loosening, film it and message the workshop. Marks on the chrome wipe off with a damp cloth. Some sofas take five sets, so count before you start. How many sets came in your box?

The [support bars Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/floor-sofa-support-bars-assembly/) shows the joints up close, and the [modular floor sofa atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/modular-floor-sofas/) shows where each set sits.

Floor first.
Then the top.
Then sit.

> **Tailor's margin:** On a floor sofa frame, the U-piece with the black plastic fitting goes on the floor. That fitting is what stops the frame sliding.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** There were no instructions in the box. How do the metal bars go together?

**The workshop's answer:** Twist and push the pieces together. A metal insert inside each tube shaves the joint down for a tight hold, and small dots must click into the holes. If a joint is stiff, click it in and out of the corner piece a few times first. A short setup video is sent instead of printed instructions.

**A common question:** Are there instructions for the support bars? My sheet doesn't match the pieces.

**The workshop's answer:** An assembly video link and a sheet are sent. The sheet shows an older bar design, so ignore its short and long connector ends; on the current bars both ends of each connector are the same size. The pieces are made to fit tightly so they don't slip apart.

**A common question:** How do I put the metal frame together when the joints are so tight?

**The workshop's answer:** Click each piece into the corner piece and pull it out a few times to loosen it before assembling, then twist and push until the dots click. If a bar still won't connect, film it and message the workshop. Keep its reply.

**A common question:** Does the floor sofa come with its metal support bars?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, the bars are included, and some sofas need five sets. Twist and push to join them. Marks on the bars wipe off with a damp cloth.

**A common question:** Will the metal bars scratch my wood floors?

**The workshop's answer:** The steel bars, about 5/8 in (1.6 cm) in diameter, have stoppers underneath. For extra floor care, rubber protectors can be added.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Do the floor sofa cushions need assembling too?

No. The cushions arrive already made in their covers. The metal bars are the only part you put together, and they ship unassembled in their own box.

### Why do the bar joints feel so tight?

On purpose. A metal insert inside each tube shaves the joint for a firm hold, so the frame doesn't slip apart. Clicking a stiff piece in and out of the corner piece a few times loosens it.

### Which way up does the floor sofa frame go?

The U-piece with the black plastic fitting sits at the bottom against the floor, so the frame doesn't slide. The other U-shape goes on top, and the L-shapes connect the sides.
