# How do I put the floor sofa's metal bars together when no instructions came?

*Every good joint puts up a little fight before it gives you the click. Here is how the workshop answers folks who write in with bars in hand and no paper in the box.*

Also asked as: Instructions for putting together the chrome bars?; Our shipment did not come with instructions.

> **The quick answer:** Twist and push each metal bar into the next until the small spring dots click into the holes. A metal insert inside each bar shaves the joint down so it grips firmly, so firm pressure is normal, and tapping the bar on the floor helps. If a joint is too tight, click it in and out of the corner piece a few times.

## Key facts

- The bars join by twisting and pushing.
- A metal insert inside each bar shaves the joint down for a firm grip.
- Small spring dots must click into holes; you hear a click when a joint is seated.
- Firm pressure, or tapping the bar on the floor, seats a joint.
- Clicking a tight joint in and out of the corner piece a few times loosens it.
- A setup video and PDF instructions are sent on request.
- Newer-model bars are all the same length; the older model had short and long pieces.
- Each bar is steel tube about ⅝ in (16 mm) across, in a silver/chrome finish, and no screws are needed.
- A standard sofa takes 4 bars, 2 at the sides and 2 at the back, behind two 39 x 39 in (100 x 100 cm) L-shaped backrests.
- Assembled, the sofa is about 79 x 39 in (200 x 100 cm), with a seat height of about 13.5 to 14.5 in.

## 'Our box came with no instructions'

It's one of the questions the workshop hears most about the [modular floor sofas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/modular-floor-sofas/), my friend, and it nearly always arrives with a bar in one hand and a phone in the other. The whole answer fits on a matchbook: twist and push.

The workshop sends a setup video and PDF instructions to anyone who asks, and some frames arrive already assembled. If yours came as loose bars, there's a knack to it, and once your hands learn it the rest goes quick.

## How to seat one metal bar joint until it clicks

1. **Find the spring dots**: Each joint has small spring dots, little buttons, that must click into holes in the next piece. Line them up before you press.
2. **Twist as you push**: Turn the bar slightly while you press it home. A metal insert inside shaves the joint down so it grips firmly, so resistance here is normal.
3. **Listen for the click**: A seated joint clicks. It takes firm pressure; if a bar stops short, tap it on the floor to send it the last bit.
4. **Loosen a stubborn one**: Too tight? Click that piece into the corner piece and pull it out a few times, then fit everything together.

## 'Do I need a rubber mallet?'

The workshop has never asked for one. Its advice is firm hands and, when a joint stops short, a tap of the bar on the floor. The resistance you feel is the insert doing its work, shaving the joint so it grips.

A seam is a promise, and a joint is the same kind of promise made in metal. Tight going in is how it holds once you sit. The [floor sofa support bars Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/floor-sofa-support-bars-assembly/) walks the whole frame, piece by piece.

## 'Why are half my metal bars shorter than the rest?'

Then you likely have the older model, which came with short and long pieces. On the newer model every bar is the same length and they slot straight together. The motion is the same either way: twist, push, click. The glossary entry for [metal support bars](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#metal-support-bars) names the parts.

Which joint is fighting you, the first or the last?

> **Tailor's margin:** A floor sofa bar joint is seated only when it clicks: the spring dots must pop into the holes, even if the bar needs a tap on the floor.

> A tight floor sofa bar is working as designed: the metal insert inside shaves the joint down so it grips firmly once the spring dots click.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** How do the floor sofa's support bars go together? Nothing came in the box to explain it.

**The workshop's answer:** Twist and push the bars together. A metal insert inside each bar shaves down the connection so it holds firmly, and small dots, the pins, have to click in. The workshop sends a setup video link on request.

**A common question:** The bars won't go all the way in. What am I doing wrong?

**The workshop's answer:** Twist as you push, and let the small dots click into place. If a joint is too tight, click each piece into the corner piece and pull it out a few times until it loosens.

**A common question:** The frame pieces just won't click. Is there a trick?

**The workshop's answer:** Each joint has small spring buttons that must click into the holes. It takes firm pressure, you'll hear a click once it's seated, and tapping the bar on the floor helps.

**A common question:** My metal bars arrived with spots that look like rust. Are they rusty?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop says it's production oxide residue, not rust, and it usually wipes off with a cloth. If it doesn't, or a bar is bent or cracked, send the workshop a close photo of that bar, my friend, with the joint in the frame.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does the floor sofa frame ever arrive already put together?

Sometimes, yes: some frames arrive assembled. If yours comes as loose bars, the workshop sends a setup video and PDF instructions on request, and the same twist-and-push motion joins every piece.

### How can I tell a bar joint is fully seated?

You hear it. The small spring dots pop into the holes with a click once the joint is home. No click usually means it needs more pressure, or a tap of the bar on the floor.

### Are all the floor sofa bars the same length?

On the newer model, yes: every bar is the same length and they slot straight together. The older model had short and long pieces, so sort the bars by length before you start joining them.
