# How thick are the floor sofa's metal bars, and will they scratch my wood floor?

*Three numbers decide it. The tube, the wall, the height. Only one of them can change.*

Also asked as: How thick are the metal supports?; Do the bars have rubber on the bottom?

> **The quick answer:** Floor sofa metal bars are steel tubes 5/8 in (1.6 cm) in diameter with stoppers underneath, so buy rubber protectors in that size if you want extra care for a wood floor. The tube wall is 1/16 in (1.6 mm), and a thicker 0.075 in (1.9 mm) wall is possible. The bar height, about 23 in (59 cm), is standard and can't be increased.

## Key facts

- The support bars are steel tubes 5/8 in (1.6 cm) in diameter.

- Bar height is about 23 in (59 cm) and can't be increased.
- The bars have stoppers underneath.

- On a two-seater, two small bars do the job of one wide bar.

## “How thick are the metal supports?”

5/8 in (1.6 cm) across. Steel, not aluminum.

That is the number to take to the hardware store. Rubber protectors in that size can be waiting before the sofa arrives.

## “Will they scratch my floor?”

The bars have stoppers underneath to protect floors. On a wood floor you care about, a rubber protector on each foot adds a second layer. It is a small thing, and it asks nothing of the sofa.

The bars do quiet work besides. At the sides and back they hold the backrests up, which is why the modular floor sofa can stand free of a wall, in the middle of a room if you like.

What kind of floor will your sofa stand on?

## “Can they be taller, or thicker?”

Thicker, yes. The standard tube wall is 1/16 in (1.6 mm); a 0.075 in (1.9 mm) wall is possible.

Taller, no. The bar height of about 23 in (59 cm) is standard and can't be increased, so a request for 27.5 in (70 cm) gets a kind no. Height is a feeling, and this one is set.

## “Can I buy spares? Mine has two small bars.”

Spare bars have their own listing. The updated bars ship unassembled and go together easily. On a two-seater, two small bars do the same job as one wide bar.

The [modular floor sofas atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/modular-floor-sofas/) shows the layouts, and the glossary explains [metal support bars](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#metal-support-bars).

A tube, a wall, a height.
Two you can choose around.
The floor is yours to protect.

> **Tailor's margin:** Floor sofa metal bars are 5/8 in steel tubes; buy rubber protectors in that size before the sofa arrives to look after a wood floor.

> The metal bars on a floor sofa stand about 23 in tall, a standard height that can't be raised; only the tube wall can go thicker.

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, spare bars have their own listing. The updated bars ship unassembled but are easy to put together. The wall is 1/16 in (1.6 mm) thick and a 0.075 in (1.9 mm) version is possible; the bar height, about 23 in (59 cm), is standard and can't be increased.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Do the support bars need assembling?

Yes, a little: the updated bars ship unassembled and go together easily, with no special tools. If a bar arrives damaged or missing, photograph it with the packaging the day the box opens and send the photos to the workshop.

### Why does my two-seater have two small bars instead of one wide one?

On a two-seater, two small bars do the same job as one wide bar. They hold the backrests just as a single bar would, and each one has stoppers underneath, so rubber protectors in the 5/8 in (1.6 cm) size fit every foot.

### What size rubber protectors fit the support bars?

Look for protectors made for 5/8 in (1.6 cm) tubes, the diameter of the steel support bars. Buy them before the sofa arrives so they go on the first time the bars are set up; the bars already have stoppers underneath.
