# Can the modular floor sofa be used as a bed, and how does it convert?

*It does not fold. You take things away until only the seat is left, and the seat becomes the bed.*

Also asked as: Can it unfold into a bed?; Are the backrests removable?

> **The quick answer:** Yes, a modular floor sofa works as a bed once you lift off the loose backrests and armrests and lay the seat cushions flat side by side. Nothing folds out. On the 3-seater, two 39 x 79 in (100 x 200 cm) seats and a foldable 39 x 39 in piece arrange as 118 x 39 in or 79 x 79 in.

## Key facts

- A floor sofa converts by laying the seat cushions flat; it does not fold out like a traditional sofa bed.
- Backrests and armrests are loose cushions that rest in place and lift away.
- 3-seater modules: two 39 x 79 in (100 x 200 cm) seat cushions plus one foldable 39 x 39 in (100 x 100 cm) piece.
- Bed arrangements: 118 x 39 in (300 x 100 cm) or 79 x 79 in (200 x 200 cm).
- Two-layer seats are about 39 in (1 m) wide, or about 79 in (2 m) opened.
- One version lies flat to about 75 in (190 cm) long.
- Every part has a removable, machine-washable zippered cover.

## Lift off the backrests; nothing on a floor sofa folds out

A floor sofa bed has no mechanism.

On the [modular floor sofas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/modular-floor-sofas/), the backrests and armrests are loose cushions. They rest in place and are a little shallower than the seats. Lift them off. What stays on the floor is the seat, and the seat is the bed. One version lies flat to about 75 in (190 cm) long.

On the two-layer models, lift off the top layer and lay it beside the bottom one. Each layer is about 39 in (1 m) wide; opened, the pair runs about 79 in (2 m).

## How the pieces lie, model by model

| Model | As a sofa | As a bed |
|---|---|---|
| 3-seater modular | Two 39 x 79 in seats and a foldable 39 x 39 in piece | 118 x 39 in (300 x 100 cm) or 79 x 79 in (200 x 200 cm) |
| Two-layer seat | Layers stacked, about 39 in wide | Layers side by side, about 79 in across |
| L-shaped corner | Seats and backrests around a corner | One large bed or a conversation pit |

## A guest bed that washes

Many buyers keep the laid-flat seats as a guest bed and write back that it is comfortable to sleep on. Custom sizes can be made to suit a specific bed size. A sofa by day.

A bed by night.

The same seat, lying down.

> **Tailor's margin:** Measure the floor before a floor sofa becomes a guest bed: laid flat, the 3-seater covers 79 x 79 in or 118 x 39 in.

> Two floor sofa seat cushions laid side by side make a 79 x 79 in bed. The backrests are loose, so nothing has to unfold.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Is the seat made of two layers? Could I unfold it into a bed?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The seat is two separate layers: stack them for a couch, lay them flat for a bed. The standard piece is about 39 in (1 m) wide, or 79 in (2 m) opened, and buyers find it comfortable to sleep on.

**A common question:** Can the big L-shaped version turn into a bed or a conversation pit?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. There are corner (L-shaped) versions, and their cushions lay out as one large bed.

**A common question:** Is a floor sofa comfortable enough for guests to sleep on for a few weeks?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Laid flat, the teddy floor sofa gives a roughly 79 x 79 in king-size surface on 1.75 lb/ft³ (28 kg/m³) cold foam for two adults, and buyers have used it for multi-week guest stays.
