# Do the floor sofa mattresses stay together when it's used as a bed?

*Right, then. Two mattresses, one bed, and the old worry about who drifts toward the wall at three in the morning.*

Also asked as: Will the base stay together side by side?; Can they slip away from each other?

> **The quick answer:** Mostly, yes: floor sofa mattresses rarely slide apart in bed mode, because non-slip fabric lines the underside of the mattresses and the ottoman, and the pieces are heavy. They are independent modules with no velcro connectors. If you want them fastened, ask before ordering; ties were offered once, but another reply said this model can't take them.

## Key facts

- Non-slip fabric lines the underside of the mattresses and the ottoman.
- The modules are independent and don't attach to each other.
- No velcro connectors are provided.
- The pieces are heavy, so pushed side by side they mostly stay together.
- Ties to fasten the two mattresses were offered in one case and ruled out for the model in another.
- In bed mode, the two seat mattresses of about 79 x 39 x 6.5 in (200 x 100 x 17 cm) lie side by side at about 79 x 79 in (200 x 200 cm), close to king size.
- With the 39 x 39 in (100 x 100 cm) ottoman added, the bed reaches about 79 x 119 in.
- A standard modular floor sofa weighs about 55 to 77 lb (25–35 kg) in total, and that weight helps the pieces stay put.

## What keeps the bed together

- ✓ Non-slip fabric under each sofa mattress.
- ✓ The same non-slip fabric under the ottoman.
- ✓ Weight: the pieces are heavy, so pushed side by side they mostly stay put.

## What the set doesn't include

- ✗ Velcro connectors between the mattresses.
- ✗ Any fitting that joins one module to the next.
- ✗ A promise of ties on every model.

## The tie question, honestly

Here the answers have disagreed, dear, and I would rather tell you than tidy it up. One reply offered to add ties so the two mattresses could be fastened together in bed mode. Another, after checking with the tailor, said ties can't be made on this model.

So ask before ordering, name your exact sofa, and get the answer in writing. I once promised ties on a cushion whose seams couldn't take them, and I have asked the cutting table first ever since.

## How to lay out the mattresses so the bed stays together

Take the backrests off, lay the mattresses flat and push the long edges firmly together. The [non-slip base](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#non-slip-base) and the weight of each piece do the rest. Bed sizes and firmness are in the [floor sofa bed Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/floor-sofa-bed-size-firmness/); tie options for other cushions are in the [sliding and ties Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/stop-bench-cushion-sliding-ties-nonslip/). The whole family of sets lives in the [modular floor sofa atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/modular-floor-sofas/).

How often will yours be a bed, and how often a sofa?

> **Tailor's margin:** Floor sofa mattresses stay side by side in bed mode thanks to non-slip fabric underneath and sheer weight; no velcro is included, so ask about ties before ordering.

> Floor sofa modules don't attach to each other: non-slip fabric under the mattresses and ottoman, plus their weight, keeps a bed from sliding apart.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** When the sofa becomes a bed, do the two mattresses drift apart?

**The workshop's answer:** No. Non-slip fabric under the mattresses and the ottoman keeps them together side by side. Velcro to join the mattresses isn't included.

**A common question:** Do the pieces attach to each other with velcro in bed mode?

**The workshop's answer:** No. The pieces are separate and don't attach. They're heavy, though, so pushed side by side they mostly stay together.

**A common question:** Is there any way to fasten the two mattresses together as a bed?

**The workshop's answer:** In one case the shop offered to add ties so the pieces could be fastened in bed mode. Another reply said ties aren't possible on this model, so confirm before ordering.

**A common question:** Can I wash the non-slip bottom, and why are rubber bits coming off?

**The workshop's answer:** Don't machine wash or tumble dry it; wipe it clean. Rubber bits come off when the non-slip fabric goes through the wash with the cover, so remove the non-slip part before washing the covers.

**A common question:** Can two cushions be tied together so they don't slide apart?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, on cushions ordered with ties: ties on the corners or meeting edges join stacked cushions, a seat and back laid flat as a bed, or two bench cushions end to end. Ask for ties on every cushion in the order.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does the ottoman grip the floor like the mattresses do?

Yes. The same non-slip fabric runs under the ottoman as under the sofa mattresses, so it holds its place in the layout when it is pushed up against them.

### Who can confirm whether my sofa model takes ties?

The workshop, after checking with the tailor. Replies have differed, with ties offered once and ruled out for the model another time, so ask before ordering and name the exact sofa you are buying.

### Laid flat, is a floor sofa bed one surface or two?

Two. The mattresses are independent modules pushed side by side, with a seam between them. Non-slip fabric underneath and their weight keep them together; no connector joins them into one piece.
