# Is the linen on your floor cushions real linen?

*Real linen has a dry, slubbed hand and a matte light that chenille never quite copies. On a floor cushion, the name on the listing won't tell you which one you have. The code will.*

Also asked as: Is it 100% linen?; The photos look more like chenille than linen

> **The quick answer:** Whether a linen floor cushion is real linen depends on the color code, so ask for the fiber content of the exact code you want. The khaki and natural-series linens have been confirmed as 100% linen, while the cream and beige were 50% linen. One chart sent was 100% cotton, and the tufted 'linen' floor cushion uses a chenille-like fabric that isn't true linen.

## Key facts

- Khaki and the natural-series linens were stated as 100% linen.
- The cream and beige linens were 50% linen.
- One color chart sent for a linen request was 100% cotton.
- The tufted 'linen' floor cushion uses a chenille-like fabric that isn't true linen.
- Tufted floor cushion covers are not removable.
- Linen natural35 is the closest match to velvet 38, and lila918 to velvet 21.

## What each floor-cushion 'linen' turned out to be

| Fabric or code | Fiber content as stated | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Khaki linen | 100% linen | Confirmed by the workshop |
| Natural series, e.g. natural35 | 100% natural linen | Closest linen to velvet 38 |
| lila918 | Stated as natural linen | Closest linen to velvet 21 |
| Cream and beige | 50% linen | A blend, not pure linen |
| Chart sent for a light-pink request | 100% cotton | No 100% linen was available at that time |
| Tufted 'linen' floor cushion | Not true linen | Chenille-like hand; cover not removable |

## The cushion that arrived as a blend

A buyer in the US who wanted natural fiber only asked whether the linen covers were blended with synthetics. The reply said 100% linen. The cushion that arrived was a linen blend: the production team had used it.

The workshop remade the cushion in a natural cotton from its chart, and the cost was shared. I tell this one because the answers on linen haven't always been as clear as they should be, and you deserve to know that before you choose.

## How to confirm the fiber before you order

1. **Pick the exact code**: Choose from the chart in the listing photos, not a color name. Each color comes in several shades, and the fiber can differ between them.
2. **Ask for the fiber content of that code**: A one-line message does it: is this code 100% linen? Khaki and natural have answered yes; cream and beige answered 50%.
3. **Ask for a close-up**: Linen shows its slubs and a flat, matte surface. The tufted cushion's fabric reads softer and more chenille-like, and a close-up makes that plain.
4. **Keep the reply**: Save the message that states the fiber, so there's a clear record if the cloth that arrives is different.

## Pairing linen with velvet on the same floor

Many of you mix a linen floor cushion with velvet ones, my friends, and the pairing is lovely when the tones agree. Natural35 sits closest to velvet 38, a quiet oat against a soft sheen. Lila918 is the nearest linen to velvet 21.

The difference between the real thing and the look-alike is laid out in [real linen vs linen-look](https://cushionguide.com/guides/real-linen-vs-linen-look-cushion-fabric/). Browse [linen and cotton-linen](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-and-cotton-linen/) for the natural fibers, or [linen-look fabrics](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-look-fabrics/) if the texture matters more than the label. Shapes and sizes are on the [floor cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/floor-cushions/) page. Which matters more in your room, the fiber or the look?

> **Tailor's margin:** A floor cushion called linen can be 100% linen, a 50% blend or cotton. Ask for the fiber content of your exact color code first.

> Linen on a floor cushion is decided by the color code: khaki and natural were 100% linen, while cream and beige were 50% linen.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Is the tufted 'linen' floor cushion true linen? Is it fire resistant, and does the cover come off?

**The workshop's answer:** It isn't true linen; the fabric has a softer, chenille-like look. A fire-resistant fabric is available on request, and the cover on this tufted cushion can't be removed.

**A common question:** Is the linen fabric 100% linen?

**The workshop's answer:** It depends on the color. Khaki linen was confirmed as 100% linen. For a light-pink request, the chart sent was 100% cotton, no 100% linen was available at that time, and the cream and beige were 50% linen. Ask for the fiber content of your exact color.

**A common question:** Is your linen natural or mixed, and which linen goes with my velvet color?

**The workshop's answer:** The reply said the linen range is 100% natural linen. Linen natural35 is the closest to velvet color 38, and lila918 is the closest to velvet color 21.

**A common question:** How can I tell which fabric a code belongs to?

**The workshop's answer:** The prefix tells you: L is linen, K is acrylic-linen, N is cotton stripes, the 100s are velvet, the 900s are soft fabric, COR is corduroy, M or T is outdoor, DRM is duck canvas and 0- is bouclé.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does 'linen-look' on a cushion mean the same as linen?

No. Linen-look describes a fabric woven to resemble linen's slubbed texture, often without linen fiber. On floor cushions the workshop's replies have ranged from 100% linen to 50% blends and cotton, so the code matters more than the name.

### Can I get a natural-fiber floor cushion if pure linen isn't available?

Yes. When a buyer who wanted natural fiber received a blend, the workshop remade the cushion in a natural cotton from its chart. Cotton codes sit on the charts alongside the linens, so ask for their fiber content too.

### Can the tufted floor cushion's cover be taken off for washing?

No. The tufted floor cushion's cover isn't removable, so it is spot-cleaned rather than machine-washed. If a washable cover matters to you, choose a zippered floor cushion style instead.
