# How deep should a floor cushion be?

*The listing gave the back cushion size and skipped the one number that decides whether your ankles land on foam or on the rug. Here it is, with the arithmetic.*

Also asked as: What is the depth of the floor cushion?; Can adults sit criss-cross applesauce on this?

> **The quick answer:** A standard floor cushion is 24 or 27 in (61 or 69 cm) deep, and an adult who wants to sit cross-legged should order at least 28 in (71 cm). Depth is the front-to-back measurement. If neither standard fits your space, write custom numbers in length x depth x thickness order, such as 4 ft x 27 in x 8 in (122 x 69 x 20 cm).

## Key facts

- Standard floor cushions are 24 in (61 cm) or 27 in (69 cm) deep.
- Adults who sit cross-legged need a depth of at least 28 in (71 cm).
- You can pick a listed size or give your own measurements.
- Custom sizes are written length x depth x thickness, for example 4 ft x 27 in x 8 in (122 x 69 x 20 cm).

## Depth by the way you sit

| Situation | Depth to order | Where the number comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Standard, smaller | 24 in (61 cm) | Listed size |
| Standard, larger | 27 in (69 cm) | Listed size, and the depth in the 4 ft custom example |
| Adult sitting cross-legged | 28 in (71 cm) or more | The workshop's recommended minimum |
| Your floor, your number | Any depth you measure | Written as length x depth x thickness |

## Why the cross-legged number is 28, not 27

Sit with your legs crossed and your knees swing out while your feet tuck under the opposite thigh. The footprint you need front to back grows, and the cushion has to grow with it. That's where the 28 in (71 cm) recommendation comes from.

The step from 27 to 28 in looks small on paper. On the floor it decides whether your ankles rest on the cushion or hang off the front edge onto the rug.

Depth is only one of three numbers. For the height side of the question, the [floor cushion thickness pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/floor-cushion-thickness-guide/) works through how much foam you want between you and the floor, and the [floor cushions atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/floor-cushions/) shows the shapes. How do you actually sit down there, partner: legs out, knees up, or crossed?

## Writing a custom depth so it gets read right

1. **Measure the spot**: Tape the floor space front to back. That's the most depth the room will give you.
2. **Put the numbers in order**: Length, then depth, then thickness: 4 ft x 27 in x 8 in (122 x 69 x 20 cm). The middle number is the [seat depth](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#seat-depth).
3. **Label every unit**: Write in or ft after each number. An unlabeled 27 can be read as 10¾ in (27 cm), which is under 11 in.
4. **Choose the nearest size, then note yours**: Pick the closest listed size and write your exact measurements in the order note.

> **Tailor's margin:** A floor cushion for an adult who sits cross-legged should be at least 28 in (71 cm) deep, one inch past the 27 in standard.

> Floor cushion depth is the front-to-back number listings forget; write custom sizes as length x depth x thickness, like 4 ft x 27 in x 8 in.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** How wide and deep is your standard floor cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** Standard floor cushions are 24 or 27 in (61 or 69 cm) deep. Pick a size from the listing, or give your own measurements, for example 4 ft x 27 in x 8 in.

**A common question:** Is it deep enough for an adult to sit cross-legged?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, as long as you order a depth of at least 28 in (71 cm).

**A common question:** Can the floor sofa be made narrower to fit my wall?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Order the standard sofa and write your width in the note, such as 60, 65 or 70 in (152, 165 or 178 cm). Past narrower builds were priced the same as the standard size; a custom width can take a little longer to make, so ask for the current estimate when you order.

**A common question:** What size topper should I order for my couch seat?

**The workshop's answer:** Go slightly larger than the seat: a 55 in (140 cm) pad on a 54 in (137 cm) couch sits more naturally than an exact match. Toppers are made to exact size, so include the color code and fill preference.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is a floor cushion's depth the same as its thickness?

No. Depth runs front to back along the floor; thickness is the height of the foam. In a custom size such as 4 ft x 27 in x 8 in, 27 in is the depth and 8 in is the thickness.

### Can I order a floor cushion deeper than 28 inches?

Yes. Custom depths are made to the number you write, so a cushion can go past 28 in (71 cm) if your floor allows it. Measure the space front to back first and leave room to walk past.

### My floor cushion depth isn't on the dropdown. What do I pick?

Choose the listed size closest to yours, then write the exact length, depth and thickness, with units, in the order note. The dropdown sets the price; the cushion is made to what you write.
