# Do you make custom seat cushions in faux leather or real leather?

*Leather has its own light, my friends: a low, buttery gleam that most cloth only imitates. Here is what the workshop does when you want that gleam, or simply a seat you can wipe.*

Also asked as: Do you have faux leather?; Is there a fabric that can be wiped down?

> **The quick answer:** Yes, custom seat cushions can be made in faux leather for a small extra cost; ask the workshop to show you those fabrics. A smooth upholstery textile with a soft, leather-like hand is another route, and real, unprinted tri-color cowhide has been made to order for window seats. If you only need wipe-clean, velvet wipes easily.

## Key facts

- Faux leather is available for a small extra cost.
- A smooth upholstery textile on the charts has a soft, leather-like feel.
- The older leather-look range it replaced is discontinued.
- Real cowhide seat cushions have been made to order in natural, unprinted tri-color hide.
- The workshop can source the hide or use one you supply.
- Velvet wipes clean easily.
- Every listing fabric washes at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle.

## “Do you have faux leather?”

Yes, for a little more than the listing fabrics. The faux leathers aren't on the everyday charts, so ask the workshop to show them to you with your sizes, and the difference is quoted before anything is cut.

The Swatch Library keeps a shelf for [faux leather](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/faux-leather/), and the [faux leather seat cushion Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/faux-leather-seat-cushions/) is honest about where it shines and where it doesn't. One note: leather is no longer offered for the modular floor sofa.

## “Does the smooth fabric really feel like leather?”

Close enough that buyers ask. The workshop describes it as very smooth and premium, reminiscent of soft, high-quality leather, yet still a textile, with a textile's comfort and durability.

It replaced an older leather-look range that is no longer produced. If your heart was set on one of those shades, choose the nearest color from the newer chart, and ask for close-ups. Daylight never lies; your screen sometimes does.

## “Can you make it in real cowhide, not a print?”

Yes. A buyer in the US asked for two foam-filled window seat cushions, each 17.5 x 19.5 x 3 in (44.5 x 49.5 x 7.6 cm), in natural tri-color cowhide rather than printed hide. The workshop agreed, and offered either to source a hide or to work with one the buyer sent.

A real hide is the only piece of the room nobody else will ever own. For angled seats, the [trapezoid cushion Atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/trapezoid-cushions/) shows how the shapes are drawn; square ones live under [window seat cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/).

## “Honestly, I just want something I can wipe.”

Then leather may be more than you need. [Velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/) wipes clean easily, and every fabric on the listing machine washes at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. What lands on your seat most weeks: coffee, crayons or muddy paws?

> **Tailor's margin:** If wipe-clean is the real goal, velvet wipes easily and every listing fabric washes at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle.

> A pair of 17.5 x 19.5 x 3 in window seat cushions was made in natural tri-color cowhide, from a hide the workshop can source or the buyer can send.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Do you have faux leather, or some other fabric I can wipe clean?

**The workshop's answer:** The velvet wipes clean easily, and every fabric on the listing machine washes at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. Faux leather is also available for a bit more; ask to see those fabrics.

**A common question:** Could you make my window seat cushions in real cowhide?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Two foam-filled seat cushions of 17.5 x 19.5 x 3 in were agreed in natural tri-color cowhide, not printed hide. The workshop can use a hide you supply or source one itself.

**A common question:** Does the smooth fabric on your chart actually feel like leather?

**The workshop's answer:** It has a very smooth, premium feel reminiscent of soft, high-quality leather, but it is still a textile, with a textile's comfort and durability. The older leather-look fabrics are no longer produced, so pick similar colors from the newer chart.

**A common question:** Is there a branded stain-proof finish on your fabrics?

**The workshop's answer:** No branded finish. The workshop calls its fabrics performance fabrics: durable, pre-shrunk and machine washable, except the 100% cotton stripes. For families, soft fabric and velvet clean most easily.

**A common question:** Do you have patterns, like animal prints, or only plain colors?

**The workshop's answer:** Mostly plain colors, but stripes, plaid and tartan, patterned velvets and animal prints sit on extra charts at no extra cost. A print you found elsewhere can sometimes be sourced from a photo, at a higher price.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does faux leather cost more than the standard cushion fabrics?

Yes, a little more than the listing fabrics. Ask the workshop to show you the faux leather options along with your cushion sizes, and the difference is quoted before the order goes into production.

### Can I send my own cowhide to be made into seat cushions?

Yes. For a pair of window seat cushions the workshop agreed to work with a hide the buyer supplied, or to source a natural hide itself. Give the finished sizes, such as 17.5 x 19.5 x 3 in, with the request.

### Is leather an option for the modular floor sofa?

No. Leather is no longer offered for the modular floor sofa. Real cowhide was agreed only for small window seat cushions, so for a sofa look at velvet or the smooth leather-feel textile instead.
