# Can I get a thicker floor cushion, like 8, 10 or 12 inches?

*Yes. Standard is 4 in, and the table will cut to 12 in. The checklist keeps you from paying for inches you won't use.*

Also asked as: Could I get an 8 inch thick floor mattress?; Can I get it 5 to 6 inches thick?

> **The quick answer:** Yes, floor cushions can be made thicker than the standard 4 in (10 cm): 5, 6, 8, 10 or 12 in, or up to 11¾ in (30 cm) in metric sizes. Extra thickness raises the seat, makes the cushion comfortable to sleep on or turns it into a floor couch. Thicker cushions cost more, so send your size and thickness for a quote.

## Key facts

- Standard floor cushions are 4 in (10 cm) thick.
- Custom thicknesses of 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12 in are made on request.
- Metric options run about 3, 5, 6, 8 and 12 in (8, 13, 15, 20 and 30 cm).
- The largest 48 x 48 in (122 x 122 cm) corner floor cushion can be made 10 in (25 cm) thick.
- The chunky floor-couch style is 12 in (30 cm) thick.
- Thicker floor cushions cost more and are quoted by size.

## Before you ask for 8, 10 or 12 inches

- ✓ **Say what the thickness is for:** sitting higher, sleeping, or a floor couch. The workshop will ask, because the answer shapes the recommendation.
- ✓ **Start from the standard:** 4 in (10 cm) on most floor cushions; some tufted listings run 4 to 5 in.
- ✓ **Pick a real step:** 5, 6, 8, 10 or 12 in, or 3¼, 5, 6, 7¾ or 11¾ in (8, 13, 15, 20 or 30 cm).
- ✓ **Send the full size with the thickness,** for example 48 x 48 x 10 in, so the quote is for the cushion you mean.
- ✓ **Expect a higher price:** doubling thickness has added roughly half again; tripling it has roughly doubled it.
- ✓ **Price a stack as well:** two 6 in cushions cost noticeably less than one 12 in cushion.

## What each thickness is usually asked for

| Thickness | Metric | What buyers use it for |
|---|---|---|
| 4 in | 4 in (10 cm) | The standard floor cushion and tufted floor mattress |
| 5 to 6 in | 5 to 6 in (13 to 15 cm) | Sitting a little higher; the photographed tufted cushion is 6 in |
| 8 in | 7¾ in (20 cm) | Sleeping on, or a firmer, flatter-looking cushion; linen floor cushions go to 8 in on request |
| 10 in | 9¾ in (25 cm) | Even the largest 48 x 48 in corner cushion has been quoted at 10 in |
| 12 in | 11¾ in (30 cm) | The chunky floor-couch style |

## Is 12 inches too thick? Ask the room

On the floor, [thickness](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#thickness) is your seat height. At 4 in you are sitting on the floor with a cushion under you. At 12 in you are sitting on a low couch. Neither is wrong; they are different pieces of furniture.

So pick the number from who sits there and how often they get up. The [floor cushion thickness Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/floor-cushion-thickness-guide/) walks the trade-offs, and the [seat height calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/seat-height-calculator/) turns a height you like into inches of cushion. What height do you want to sit at, partner? For quarter-circle shapes, see [corner floor cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/corner-floor-cushions/).

## Firmer and flatter: a 6 in cushion taken to 8 in

A buyer wrote asking for 39 x 39 in (100 x 100 cm) linen floor cushions made firmer, 7 to 8 in (18 to 20 cm) thick, with a flatter top. The cushion in the photo is 6 in (15 cm). The workshop offered it at 8 in (20 cm), which lands right inside the range they wanted. One honest measurement, one clean answer.

> **Tailor's margin:** For a very high floor seat, stack two 6 in cushions instead of ordering one 12 in cushion: the stack costs noticeably less.

> A floor cushion can be made 5, 6, 8, 10 or 12 in thick; the standard is 4 in, and every step thicker is quoted by size.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** How thick are the linen floor cushions, and can they go thicker?

**The workshop's answer:** Standard linen floor cushions are 4 in thick, and an 8 in version can be made. A 24 x 44 in cushion was quoted at 8 in thick.

**A common question:** How thick are the tufted floor mattresses, and can I get them thicker?

**The workshop's answer:** Standard is 4 in (10 cm), with some listings described as 4 to 5 in. They can be made 6, 8, 10 or 12 in thick, or 7¾ or 11¾ in (20 or 30 cm), at a higher price.

**A common question:** Can I get the cushions thicker so I sit higher off the floor or can sleep on them?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Standard is 4 in (10 cm); 5, 6 or 8 in versions sit higher and suit sleeping, and the chunky floor-couch style is 12 in thick.

**A common question:** Can you make an extra-thick floor seat, somewhere around 8 to 10 inches?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. A 56 x 20 in seat was quoted at both 6 in and 8 in, and a floor-sofa set was agreed with a 20 x 52 x 8 in seat plus a backrest and two armrests.

**A common question:** Can the biggest 48 x 48 corner floor cushion be made 10 inches thick?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. A 48 x 48 in tufted corner floor cushion was quoted at 10 in thick, and the workshop asked what the extra thickness was needed for.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does a thicker floor cushion cost more?

Yes. Thickness beyond the standard is quoted by size. As a rough guide, doubling a cushion's thickness has added about half to its price and tripling it has roughly doubled it, so send full dimensions for an exact figure.

### Is stacking two floor cushions cheaper than one thick one?

Usually. Two stacked 6 in cushions cost noticeably less than one 12 in cushion, and two cushions of about 10 in (25 cm) make a seat around 20 in (50 cm) high. A foam base under a tufted top also adds height.

### Can a floor cushion that turned out too thick be made thinner?

Not by swapping the foam. Covers are sewn to one foam thickness, so thinner foam in the old cover will sag. Reorder the same size and fabric with the thinner option instead.
