# Can I send you my own fabric for my cushions?

*Sometimes, my friends. But the fabric you love rarely needs to travel; a good photograph of it usually does the work.*

Also asked as: Can I send you my own fabric?; Is it possible to send fabric to use?

> **The quick answer:** Customer's own fabric (COM) cushions are possible case by case, but the workshop usually steers you to its own range, because fabric shipped in tends to add delays and cost. If you do send it, you ship it yourself and say what the fabric is first. The easier route: send a photo or the fabric's name for a close match from the charts or a sourced look-alike.

## Key facts

- Customer's own fabric has been accepted case by case.
- You ship the fabric yourself and say what it is before it's accepted.
- Fabric shipped in to the workshop often adds delays and cost.
- A photo or the fabric's name gets the closest match from the charts.
- The workshop can search the textile market for an exact or very close match.
- Specially sourced fabrics cost more than the standard range.
- Samples help you compare before ordering.

## What usually happens when you ask

The honest answer has shifted with the case. Some buyers heard no; others were told yes, as long as they shipped the fabric themselves. What stays constant is the reason for caution: fabric that has to travel to the workshop tends to hold an order up, with delays and added cost on the way in.

When it has been accepted, two conditions came with it. You post the fabric yourself, and you say what it is before it goes in the box. One buyer in the US was told fabric from a home-decor retailer could be used this way.

## The easier road: send the fabric's portrait

1. **Photograph it in daylight**: A good photo, or the fabric's name and details, is enough to start. Daylight never lies; your screen sometimes does.
2. **Get the closest chart matches**: The workshop points you to the nearest codes across its fabric charts.
3. **Ask for a sourced match if the charts miss**: It can search the textile market for an exact or very close match, priced above the standard fabrics.
4. **Order samples before you commit**: Swatches in hand settle texture and color better than any photo can.

## Why I would rather match than ship

A color is easier to carry than a bolt of cloth. Tell me the shade, an ink navy or a mushroom linen, and the charts usually hold a close cousin. Browse [linen-look fabrics](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-look-fabrics/) or [bouclé and teddy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/boucle-and-teddy/), like the navy bouclé on the window seat in the photo, then compare a few [swatches before ordering](https://cushionguide.com/guides/fabric-swatches-before-ordering/).

If you still plan to send your own, work out the yardage first with the [fabric yardage calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/fabric-yardage-calculator/). What is the fabric you have in mind, and where does the light fall on it in your room? More window seats like this one are under [window seat cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/).

> **Tailor's margin:** Before shipping your own fabric, send a daylight photo of it; the workshop can often match it from the charts or source a very close look-alike.

> If your own fabric is hard to ship, send a daylight photo instead: the workshop matches it from the charts or sources a very close look-alike.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Can I supply my own fabric, say from a home-decor store?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, customer-supplied fabric, for example from a home-decor retailer, can be used as long as you ship it to the workshop yourself.

**A common question:** Can I send my own fabric, and how much would you need?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop discourages it, because shipping fabric in can cause delays and added cost. Send a good photo or the fabric's details instead, and it will search for an exact or very close match.

**A common question:** Can I send my own fabric (COM) for a window seat cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** In that case the answer was no, and the cushion was made from the workshop's own fabrics. Share a photo of the fabric you like and the workshop points you to the closest matches on its charts, or order samples first.

**A common question:** Could my banquette cushions be made in my own designer fabric?

**The workshop's answer:** Shipping it in is difficult, so send the fabric name and your project details, and the workshop will look for a similar fabric in its range.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How much of my own fabric would a long bench cushion need?

About 4.4 yd (4 m) for a 21 x 109 x 4 in bench cushion, and about 2.7 yd (2.5 m) of 45 in wide fabric for a 60 x 14 in piped cushion. Send a photo and your dimensions for an exact figure.

### Can I see a chart fabric up close before choosing a match?

Yes. Close-ups and real-life photos of specific codes and color combinations are sent on request, and samples from the fabric-samples listing are recommended for judging texture in hand before you order.

### Where do the workshop's own fabrics come from?

They come from a mill certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (03.T.3239). Buyers who prefer natural fibers can choose a special natural fabric such as cotton instead of the standard range, and ask for samples first.
