# Is your cushion foam certified, and can I see the paperwork?

*Certification questions deserve document answers. Here is what the workshop states, what it doesn't, and the four checks I run before anyone orders on a certificate.*

Also asked as: Is the foam certified?; Is it OEKO-TEX certified?

> **The quick answer:** The workshop does not claim a US foam-industry certification for its cushion foam; what it documents is fabric from OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified mills, with certificates shared on request. The foam is high-density polyurethane, 32 DNS on bench bases and 28 DNS on floor sofa seats. If a specific certificate matters, ask for the document before ordering and rely only on what it shows.

The rest of the room stays neutral so the blue carries the corner.")

## Key facts

- Fabrics come from OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified mills.
- Certificate documents are shared on request.
- No US foam-industry certification was claimed when asked directly.
- Bench base foam is 32 DNS, about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), rated medium-firm.
- Floor sofa seat foam is 28 DNS open-cell cold foam, rated medium-hard.
- The HR cold foam runs at roughly ILD 42, varying slightly by batch.

## Four checks before you buy on a certificate

1. Ask for the certificate document itself. A sentence in a message is not a certificate.
2. Read which material it names. A fabric certificate covers fabric, not the foam inside it.
3. Look the certificate number up with the issuing body yourself before relying on it.
4. Need a US foam-industry certification specifically? Get it in writing before you pay. Asked directly, the workshop did not claim it.

## What the workshop states, material by material

Here's the ledger, partner, with nothing rounded up.

**Fabric.** The fabrics come from OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified mills, and the certificate documents are shared on request. That includes the corduroy. The [OEKO-TEX Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/oeko-tex-standard-100-cushions/) explains what the label does and doesn't reach.

**Foam.** Bench cushion bases are 32 DNS high-density polyurethane: 32 kg/m³, about 2.0 lb/ft³, rated medium-firm and resistant to sagging. Some products use open-cell HR cold foam. Floor sofa seats use 28 DNS, rated medium-hard. [Foam density in lb/ft³ and kg/m³](https://cushionguide.com/guides/foam-density-lb-ft3-kg-m3/) has the conversion table.

**Firmness.** ILD varies slightly from batch to batch, and no official ILD certificate is issued. The working figure for the HR cold foam is roughly ILD 42. Treat it as a number with a tolerance, not a spec to the decimal.

So which document do you need: one for the fabric, or one for the foam? Answer that first. If feel matters more than paper, the [foam firmness finder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/foam-firmness-finder/) gets you to a number.

## Documented, stated, not claimed

| Item | What the workshop says | What to ask for |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric | From OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified mills | The certificate document, shared on request |
| Bench base foam | 32 DNS, about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), medium-firm | The density written on your quote |
| Floor sofa seat foam | 28 DNS open-cell cold foam, medium-hard | Density and foam type in writing |
| Firmness (ILD) | Roughly 42 for the HR cold foam; varies by batch | A range; no ILD certificate is issued |
| US foam-industry certification | Not claimed when asked directly | The document, or plan without it |

> **Tailor's margin:** A fabric certificate covers fabric. Before ordering, ask which material each certificate names, and whether the foam is on it.

> Cushion foam certification is a document question: ask which material the certificate names, then look the number up yourself.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** What foam do you use, and what's the ILD?

**The workshop's answer:** The base is 32 DNS high-density foam, medium-firm and resistant to sagging, and some products use HR cold foam. ILD varies slightly by batch; the workshop describes the feel as close to high-end cold foam.

**A common question:** What foam is in the sofa mattresses, and does it carry the US foam-industry certification?

**The workshop's answer:** The sofa uses high-density 28 DNS medium-hard foam, described as a sponge that doesn't collapse. The workshop did not claim that certification. The covers can also be bought on their own.

**A common question:** What materials go into the teddy sofa, and are they certified?

**The workshop's answer:** Velvet fabric, 28-density (28 DNS) seating foam and a first-quality iron frame. The fabric comes from OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified mills, and the certificate documents were shared on request.

**A common question:** What is 32 kg/m³ in lb/ft³, and how firm is it?

**The workshop's answer:** About 2.0 lb/ft³, above the usual 1.8 lb high-density line. It's HR cold foam at roughly ILD 42, firm enough that adults don't sink through, though no official ILD certificate is issued.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does an OEKO-TEX fabric certificate cover the foam inside a cushion?

Not by itself. A certificate names the material and the manufacturer it was issued to. The workshop's documented claim is fabric from OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified mills, so ask for a separate document for anything beyond the fabric.

### Is 28 DNS foam softer than 32 DNS?

Lighter, not necessarily softer. The 28 DNS on floor sofa seats is rated medium-hard; the 32 DNS on bench bases is about 2.0 lb/ft³ and rated medium-firm. Density and firmness are separate numbers, so compare ILD too.

### Why is there no official ILD figure for the foam?

No ILD certificate is issued, and ILD varies slightly from batch to batch. The working figure for the HR cold foam is roughly ILD 42, so treat it as a range rather than a guarantee.
